Business Admin International Business

1. Key Selling Features
o Be World Ready – International Field Study opportunities are open to all business
programs. The department aims to offer at least one field study to students every term.
The learning objective will vary depending on the program, however, students who
participate in a field study opportunity typically receive: (1) Liberal Arts elective credit +
(1) Business elective credit. The cost is usually around $2000 for the field study before
the subsidy and the student receives an experiential learning experience. Past locations
have been: Germany, Ecuador, Ireland, and England.

2. General overview
o POI’s have been realigned – first two years are now more similar. Students from
Business – International Business (2-year diploma) can move into Business
Administration – International Business (3-year advanced diploma).
o Exit Strategy: Students can transfer from three year to two year program.
o Students of the two and three year programs can apply for the Certified International
Trade Professional designation (CITP) through the Forum for International Trade
Training (FITT) (designed for Canadian market) www.fittfortrade.com
o International Plan – creating international coop opportunities for students.

3. Career Opportunities
o International and domestic employment potential

Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (International Commerce and Global Development)

1. How to continue to reposition the degree around those interested in global development and
social responsibility vs. pure business.
o Primarily a social sciences degree with hard business skills such as marketing, research,
accounting.
o Grads easily find employment.
o Some graduates continue onto their MBA.

2. Opportunities
o Business development banks, large external companies. Employment may be
international in context, but located in Canada.
3. Success Stories:
o Where the student came from and where they are now. Focus on location-based,
regional testimonials from students and/or employers. Alumni testimonials.

Discuss Bridge to Honours Bachelor of Business Administration - International Commerce and Global
Development (Spring 2019)
1. How to continue to reposition the degree around those interested in global development and
social responsibility.
o Bridging available for internal and external students
o Seneca and Centennial have similar diplomas that could bridge into our ICOM program.
o Q: Why would a student take the degree program when they can take three year and
bridge to degree? A: Absolutely!

Discuss Bridge to Bachelor of Business Administration - Human Resources (Spring 2019)

1. What previous education and external organizations should we target?
o Market internally. Focus on past graduates or current Business Administration – Human
Resources (Co-op) students.

Key Selling Points:

o Degree class sizes, very small, nurturing environment. Profs are involved. Mentoring and
coaching through degree, not just at grad school level, like university.
o A college degree is exactly the same as a university degree.
o HR@NC is a very active club. Great opportunities for students to network with industry
partners and participate in workshops and speaker series.

Obstacles:
o Push Degrees – Potential students don’t associate Niagara College with degree
programs. Obstacle: Are we too close in proximity to Brock and Niagara University?
o GTA colleges have a degree panel to promote each other’s degree programs, however
they exclude all other colleges. Recruitment is brainstorming the idea of hosting a
similar event that would include all Ontario College’s who offer degree programs.

Future Plans:
o Thinking about offering some courses in the evening for grad certs and degrees in future
to attract those students who work full time yet want to come back to school. Classes
would be 5:30pm – 7:30pm.
o Looking at up to three intakes a year for all business programs, so students can have
flexibility with their studies
o Possibility to push co-op to a different intake if you can’t find one.
o Business and Management Department needs/wants to be more flexible by offering
more intake options (3), accepting competency-based exemptions and transfer credits
for longer than five years, and offering more classes in the evenings (grad certs and
degrees) so students can continue to work with working towards their
degree/certificate.
