Lesson Planning and Demo Teaching

Subject/Grade: SCIENCE 9
Lesson: Chapter 1, Module 1
Date: September 16, 2017

I. Objectives
At the end of the period, the students will be able to:
1. Identify the different parts of the Respiratory System.
2. Describe the functions of each part of the Respiratory System.
Values: Cooperation, Self-responsibility

II. Subject Matter

The Respiratory System

Materials:
Visual aids (sp. Illustration of RS), balloon, bottle and straw (constructed model of the human
chest cavity), books, flashcards of the different parts of the respiratory, printed labels for the
functions of the parts

III. Teaching Learning Activities

i. Motivation.
Let the students close their eyes and start inhaling and exhaling with a hand on their
stomach and the other on their chest.

ii. Recap/Introduction.
Have a review of the past topics and introduce the new lesson. Discuss the purpose of
the respiratory system.

iii. Discussion:
Ask the students about their observation in the motivation activity.
Show a constructed model of the human chess cavity and discuss how air gets in and
out.
Show a illustration of the respiratory system, name the parts and discuss the pathway of
oxygen in the respiratory system.

iv. Guided Learning:

Let the students form groups and assign a part of the respiratory system to them. Make
them figure out or guess the function of the assigned part and write it in a bond paper.

Parts:
1. Nose & Mouth 5. Lungs
2. Pharynx 6. Bronchi & Bronchioles
3. Larynx 7. Alveoli
4. Trachea 8. Diaphragm
Let the groups post their answers on the board. Post the prepared label of the correct
function for each part. Check and correct their answers together as a class.

v. Generalization:
Give the students a summary of the concept of the respiratory system, its parts and their
functions.

IV. Evaluation
Give a 10-item test where the students must identify which part of the RS is shown through
flashcards and let them choose the letter of the correct function written on the board.
1. Lungs a. Secondary external opening for the respiratory tract
2. Diapragm b. Passage way for both food and air
3. Nose c. Warms and moisturises air before it enters the body
4. Larynx d. Provide a clear airway connecting the larynx and bronchi
5. Bronchioles e. Carry air from the trachea to the lungs
6. Bronchi f. Has vocal folds that allow body to produce sounds
7. Pharynx g. Contains the alveoli and is main part of the respiratory system
8. Alveoli h. A thin skeletal muscle that contracts and relaxes which allows
9. Trachea air to flow in and back out of the lungs
10. Mouth i. Tiny sacs that serve as sites for gas exchange

V. Assignment
On a one half sheet of paper, write an essay answering the question, “How can you take care of
your respiratory system?”
