ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide v

1 Introduction to FPSO-ISE Software
Welcome to ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE software for Initial Scantling Evaluation of Floating
production Storage and Offloading vessels.

1.1 ISE Program Features

Initial Scantling Evaluation (ISE) software has the following features to make data entry
easy for an ISE analysis:
 Graphical interactivity for updating bulk data.
 Template-defined midship cross sections based on key dimensions, resulting in
minimal modeling time.
 Uniform user interface standardized with property window.
 Graphical display of longitudinal rule checks.
 Simplicity in import of existing projects.
 With FPSO version 3.0 and later, SEAS software is embedded in ISE.

1.2 Known Limitations and Workarounds

Note the following known limitation and workarounds to use when using FPSO-ISE:
 The Region and Language setting on your PC must be set to English (United
States). See Section 2.2, Setting the Region and Language on your PC for
instructions on performing this setup.
 Project names are limited to seven (7) characters, and cannot contain spaces.
 The project path directory cannot contain spaces.
 When laying plates, every location that involves an intersection (e.g., at the
intersection of the bottom and a bottom girder, or the side and a side stringer)
requires a virtual plate end, even though the plate does not physically end at that
location.
 Stiffeners should not be located at the ends of a plate. They should be offset by at
least 3 mm from either end of a plate.
 If the data is created by importing from an earlier version of FPSO, the user must
delete and redefine all the tank(s).
 If the order of definition of 2D Tanks is changed or 2D Tanks are redefined, the
3D tanks need to be redefined.
 If the plate definition is changed, the 2D and 3D tanks need to be redefined.
 Although the order of plates or stiffeners can be sorted, the sorted results will not
be saved.
 Although the interface does not limit the number of stiffeners on transverse
bulkhead, the rule program only accepts up to five (5) stiffeners.

3.1.2.2 Tools Ribbon

The Tools ribbon provides tools for modifying sections within a cross-section, as well as
tools to provide focus on plate, stiffeners, and tank, both at a global level, and at the local,
structure level.
To access the Tools ribbon, first add a cross section in the tree control by right-clicking
the Cross Sections node and choosing “Add Cross Section” from the pop-up menu.
Within the new section folder, select either the “Longitudinal” tree control item, or its
enclosed Structure Definition item to activate the Tools menu.

The Tools menu options can be used to modify graphics display and create a cross
section using CAD features. For details on using the CAD features, see Appendix C.

Group/Component Description
Draw This group contains all the tools for constructing CAD
images, such as lines, arcs, and splines.
Snaps Object snap options specify snap point(s) at an exact location
on an object. These tools work on native geometric entities
(lines, arcs, and splines) and also on the section curve, plate
or stiffener objects.
The snap point on an object can be as follows:
 Endpoint
 Midpoint
 Center
 Perpendicular
 Nearest (any point on an object)
 Intersection (one point)
Edit Use these tools to modify native geometric entities (lines,
arcs, and splines). These tools do not work on section curve,
plate, or stiffener objects.

10 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

Group/Component Description
Erase To erase drawing content, click this button, then select the
objects to erase using a box selection. Once the object(s) are
selected, press Enter or right-click to remove the selected
item.
Note: When erasing individual lines that are part of larger
polygons, the entire line must be inside the selection box to
be selected.
Move To move an object, click Move, then select the objects to
move using a selection box. Once the objects are selected,
press Enter or right-click to complete the selection. The
system will then ask for the source point (reference start
point) and the To point for the move action.
Fillet Connect two lines, two arcs, or one arc with a line (these two
objects must have at least one common point either visible, or
in their extension), with an arc with a specific radius. The
value of the radius has some restrictions depending on the
position of the objects. If radius = 0, the objects are either
extended until they intersect each other in one point (if there
was not an intersection point) or trimmed (if an intersection
point is visible).
Trim With the Trim command, you can trim objects at a cutting
edge defined by other objects. First select the objects that
define the cutting edges at which you want to trim an object,
then select the object. The following objects can be trimmed:
arcs, circles, elliptical arcs, and lines.
Copy To copy an object, click Copy, then select the objects to copy
using a box selection. Once the objects are selected, press
Enter or right-click to complete the selection. The system
will then ask for the source point (reference start point) and
the To point for the copy/paste action.
Extend With this command, you can extend lines, arcs, and polylines
until they intersect with another object that is used as the limit
of the extension. You will first select the objects that will
define the extension limits, then select the point on the target
object that you want to extend. The object is extended to the
point where it intersects with one of the “limiting” objects. If
the object extension does not intersect with any limiting
object, nothing will happen.
Zoom Use the Zoom options to modify the current view.
All Zooms to show all objects fully in the display window.
Interactive Freeform zooming using the mouse scroll wheel.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 15

4.1.3 Viewing File Information

User-Defined Files
As mentioned above, user-defined files are files that the user defines by inputting specific
values into a property window or data table. The application then creates the file by
inserting those values into a pre-defined format.
The user can check the contents of the following user-defined files, created at General
Data entry:
 INP
 BST
 FLY
 SMB (for tanker)

4.2 Libraries

The libraries are a set of files that provide the application with information associated
with the materials, structural elements, and wave factors associated with an ISE project
for a specific vessel.
Libraries can be developed as original files, using the library utilities listed below. Files
thus created apply to the project by default.

However, the user can also import library files from a previously developed project, as
explained in the following.

16 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

4.2.1 Importing Libraries
At the Libraries level, one or more library files may be imported using the context menu
associated with this link:

1. Right-click the Libraries link, then click Import Library.

A Windows Explorer navigation window opens.
2. Navigate to the folder containing the desired library file(s).
3. Click the folder to select it.
4. Click OK.
The files for the selected library are imported into the project folder.
In the individual library links, the user can right-click the specific link and follow the
same steps above to import only that library file.
NOTES:
 When a library file is imported, the application retains the file extension (.SLB,
etc.), but replaces the file name with the project name. For instance, for a project
with the project name FPSO_3A, a stiffener library file imported from a project
FPSO_2 is renamed as FPSO_3A.SLB.
 It is important that the user inspect a newly imported library file to be sure that
the contents are appropriate to the project into which it is imported. The user can
open the file after it is imported, and use the library utility involved to make any
needed modifications.

4.2.2 Frame Table

This feature will be used in a later release of FPSO-ISE.

4.2.3 Material Table

This table is for reference, and is read-only.

4.2.4 Stiffener
When the user clicks the Stiffener Library link, the Stiffener Library utility opens.
Stiffeners that are defined through the Stiffener Library utility and opened within FPSO
ISE are automatically available to the project.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 17

A stiffener library file can also be imported from another project, by use of the import
methodology explained above, or by import through the Stiffener Library utility, as is
explained within the Help for Stiffener Library.

4.2.5 End Connections

As with stiffeners, when the user clicks the End Connection link, the End Connection
utility opens.
Also as with Stiffener Library, End Connections defined with the End Connections utility
are available to the FPSO-ISE project. One could, for example, create end connections
with flat bar widths, in mm, of:
 0
 200
 250
 300
End Connection files can also be imported into the project from another project.

4.2.6 Cutout Library

Cutout Library files can also be created, when the user clicks the Cutout Library link.
Cutouts thus created can be used in the project, or imported into the project.

4.2.7 Wave Directional Factor

4.2.8 High Cycle Fatigue Data Table
The High Cycle Fatigue data table displays values for wave pairs, as defined in the High
Fatigue Cycle section of the Wave Directional Factor property window.

4.3 Importing FPSO Data

As of version 3.0, FPSO provides many different ways to import data from existing
projects, saving time and effort in creation of various vessel analysis parts. This section
explains how Import functionality works.
In general, each import command opens a Windows Explorer dialog that is used to
navigate to the file containing the data to be imported. After the file has been selected,
there may be other options before the data is imported from the source project to the
target project being analyzed.

4.3.1 Importing at the Project Level

20 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

At the project level, you can import three kinds of files:
 General Data Files – Import the general data (.INP file) for the project from another
project.

 Project Data Files – Import project data file, and one or more cross sections.

The system imports the following during Project Data import:

o General Data
o Libraries
o Cross section(s) including longitudinal, 2D tanks, 3D tanks, Fatigue, Slosh
o Transverse
o Forebody

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 21

 SEAS Data Files – Import SEAS data.

Note: For FPSO Conversion, after importing project data from a previous version, users
MUST right-click on the <project name> node to “Import SEAS data”.

4.3.2 Importing Libraries

One or more library files may be imported using the context menu associated with this
link:

Libraries can be imported all in one command, or by right-click and import command for
specific libraries.
Note: Although the Material Table and Wave Directional Factor are listed in this section,
they do not consist of named library files, and thus cannot be imported by the Import
command.

22 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

4.3.3 Importing Cross Sections
Use this command to import cross section data into the cross section from which the
command is called.

During Cross Section Data imports, the system imports cross sections, including
longitudinal, 2D tanks, 3D tanks, Fatigue, and Slosh data.
Note: For FPSO Conversion, after importing project data from a previous version, users
must right-click the respective Cross-Sections node to “Import-As-Built” data.

4.3.4 Importing Specific Data

Throughout the project there are various locations at which files can be imported from
another project, such as transverse data and forebody data.
In each of those locations, the import command can be displayed by right-clicking the
work flow item, and then navigating to the file to be imported into the project.

6 Cross Sections: Longitudinal Scantlings
Use the Longitudinal section to input or modify details of longitudinal structures.

6.1 Interface Overview: Plates and Stiffeners

In the Longitudinal portion of the tree-view work flow, geometric curves defined in the
template are populated with plates and stiffeners, and tanks are defined.

Plates Interface

Stiffeners Interface

32 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

6.2 Laying Plates and Stiffeners on Section Types

After generating the geometry, populate each structure first with plates, and then with
stiffeners. Only three sections are explained below, but all other sections are populated
with the same methodology.
NOTES:
1. For the Along parameter, three distance measurements are available:
 Girth – This is the distance along the geometry from the beginning of the section
type to the end. The remaining girth is displayed each time another plate or
stiffener group is added.
 Horizontal_From_CL – This is the distance from the centerline to the point at
which the plate or stiffener group begins.
 Vertical_From_BL – This is the distance from the baseline upward to the point
at which the plate or stiffener group begins.
2. Stiffeners should not be located at the ends of a plate. Give them a distance at least
3mm from either end of a plate.

6.2.1 Keel Plate

1. Select the keel plate from the work flow list, or click it along the model:

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 33

Plates
Note: Since there is only one keel plate, it is necessary to define only the plate width.
2. In the properties window, click the Definition button for Plates.

A data table for keel plates is displayed:

3. Fill in the Plate List data table:

The ID is inserted by the application.
a. Select a method for the Along parameter from the list box, as explained in
Section 6.2, Laying Plates and Stiffeners.
b. For Input, define the end point of the plate in meters along the girth for the
“Girth” option, from the CL for the “Horizontal_From_CL” option, and from the
baseline for the “Vertical from BL” option. The start point is the end point of the
previous plate or the Section start point for the first plate of the Section.
c. For Width, it is the plate width in meters calculated automatically based on the
Input value. The user cannot change this value.
d. For THK, define the thickness in millimeters.
e. Select the Material value from the list box.
f. Define the Bending efficiency.
g. Define the Shear efficiency.
Note: At present, the Bending and Shear Efficiency are set to 100%.

34 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

Values are now displayed in the Plate Properties window.

To bulk edit the plate properties, such as Material, highlight the plate rows as shown
here (in orange), then change the property in the Property Editor window.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 35

Stiffeners
1. In the properties window, click the Definition button for Stiffeners.

Two data tables for stiffeners are displayed:

Note: The Stiffener Group table should be used only to set up the location, spacing
and number of stiffeners in the stiffener groups for a section. After the groups are
defined, the Stiffener List table can be used to modify the properties of the stiffener
(such as profile, material, etc.) defined below.
2. Fill in the Stiffener Groups table:
The ID is inserted by the application.
a. Select the Along value from the list box (same as Plate).
b. For the Input parameter, specify the length from the beginning of the section to
the first stiffener for the ‘Girth’ option, or the location from the CL for the
“Horizontal_From_CL” option, and from the baseline for the “Vertical from BL”
option.
c. For the Spacing parameter, specify the distance between stiffeners.
d. For the No. of Stiffeners parameter, specify the number of stiffeners in the
group.
e. For the Orientation parameter, above the table, specify a Normal or Reverse
orientation from the list box.

36 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

3. Define stiffener properties in the Stiffener List table.
Note: A table row is displayed for each defined stiffener.
The ID is inserted by the application.
a. Select the Profile for the stiffener group from the list box.
b. Select the Material from the list box.
c. Select the Aft Bracket from the list box (see illustration below).
d. Select the Fwd Bracket from the list box (see illustration below).
e. Define the Unsupported Span (the default is zero). See illustration below.
f. Define the Small Opening in mm.

Aft Bracket Fwd Bracket

Unsupported Span

The Stiffener Property window displays the properties of each stiffener in the group.
As with the plates, the properties window for stiffeners can be used to modify
stiffener properties such as profile, material, etc. in bulk.
Notes:
1. The ID in the Stiffener List matches the ID in the Stiffener Property
window.
2. If any values in the Stiffener group table are changed, the stiffener properties
in the Stiffener List tables must be redefined.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 37

Completed plates and stiffeners are also displayed in the Keel Plate section of the
model:

6.2.2 Bottom Section and Other Sections

While the Keel Plate section often involves only one plate and one set of stiffeners, many
of the other sections involve multiple plates and multiple sets of stiffeners.

6.2.2.1 Generate Plates

A few differences for the Bottom, as well as other longer structures, are important:
 Every location that involves a knuckle (e.g., at the juncture of the bottom and a
bottom girder or the side and a side stringer) requires a virtual plate end: a
defined plate ended, even though the plate does not physically end at that
location.
 The first plate is defined in the same way that a plate is defined for the Keel
Plate.
Note: Because the entire geometry is a straight line perpendicular to the centerline
and extending transversely toward the side, for the Along parameter, either the Girth
value or the Horizontal_from_CL value can be selected, with identical results.

Note important differences:

 The Remaining Girth output parameter displays a distance after the end of the
plate, unlink the keel plate, with which one plate traverses the entire Input
distance.

38 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

 A Repeat Last Plate N Times input parameter is displayed. This parameter lets
you specify that a desired number of plates, exactly like the plate already input,
be inserted after the first plate.
This feature can be used to generate exact copies of any plate.

 Specify the number of repeated plates and click Generate.

The application inserts plates as specified.

If the specified number of plates at least equals the Remaining Girth value, the
application inserts the plates, and the Remaining Girth output becomes zero.

If the specified number of plates at least equals the Remaining Girth value, the
application inserts a sufficient number of identical plates to traverse the girth
until less than one plate length remains. Then the application inserts a final plate
that exactly fits the remaining space along the geometry.
If the user inputs a greater number than the length can accommodate, the
application inserts only enough plates to traverse the length.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 39

As with the Keel Plate, the Plate Property window displays plate details. However,
because there are multiple plates, that window also displays the ID of the plate on
which the user has focused.

Example 1: Bilge
For evaluation against the Rules, a series of straight plates suffice, of equal or
approximated equal lengths. Three plates are sufficient, although more can be used if
desired.

40 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

Example 2: Inner Skin Bulkhead
This specific section is of interest in that it consists of more than one line segment
and can involve more than simply using the Girth for plate placement.

6.2.2.2 Stiffeners

Because a longer section type uses more stiffeners than the keel plate, and may use
multiple kinds of stiffeners, section types like the Bottom section also have some
differences.

Z1 (m) is the distance from AP to the reference point of the structural model (in meters).

For each tank, specify the 3D properties (in meters):

 Tank1: Start Loc – Starting location of the first tank in the 3D tank image, from
the Reference point of the structural model.
 Tank1: End Loc – Ending location of Tank1 from the Reference point of the
structural model (also the starting point for Tank2).

44 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

 Tank2: End Loc – Ending location of Tank2, from the Reference point of the
structural model.
 Tank3: End Loc – Ending location of Tank3, from the Reference point of the
structural model. Note the following graphic that describes special cases of Tank
3 ending location.
 Has Mirror – The 3D tank image represents only the starboard side of the
vessel. To also represent the port side, after entering start and end coordinates for
all tanks, select the Has Mirror checkbox and press Enter. A new row is added
to the data table with the same Tank Type title (e.g., Wing Cargo Tank), which
represents the port side of the vessel. This new row is flagged as “Is Mirror”.
 Is Mirror – Automatically selected option when you invoke the Has Mirror
option on any tank.
As shown in the graphic below, if the tank model has outer tanks (upper row, in green
and black) that straddle the coordinates of the inner tanks (lower row), the last unused
tank number ending must be entered as -1.000 as shown in the data table above.

6.4 Fatigue

6.4.1 Stiffener Connection

1. In the Fatigue item of a cross section, click Stiffener Connection.
A table is opened with a list of stiffeners.

For each stiffener, the values are pre-populated using those specified during Stiffener
Definition. Here, except for “Stiffener”, “TankID” and “AdjTankID”, other values
can be changed and Fatigue assessment performed during a working session.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 45

The first four Location IDs are of type “Standard” as explained below.

Assuming a Web spacing = 3.70 m and X_AP of the 2nd bulkhead = 115.365, the
first two locations would be:
 Location #1: 115.365 – (3.70/2) =113.515
 Location #2: 115.365 + (3.70/2) =117.215
Assuming X_AP of the 3rd bulkhead = 152.365, the next two locations would be:
 Location #3: 152.365 – (3.70/2) =150.515
 Location #4: 152.365 + (3.70/2) =154.215

Location IDs greater than 4 (i.e., 5, 6, 7, 8) are of type “Special”. For these IDs,
actual locations from the Reference point of the structural model are user-specified.

Appendix C: FPSO Modeling – Getting Started
using CAD Features

C.1 CAD Features

The CAD features are available in the Tools menu at the top as shown here:

A new cross section is created under the “Cross Section” node of the tree control by right-clicking
it and choosing the ‘Add Cross Section’ operation. After doing it, the following changes happen
to the tree control.

Once activated, you can use the Tools menu items to do graphics operation.
The different groups are:
Draw: All the construction tools.
Snap: All the location picking utilities. These tool items work on native geometric entities (line,
arc, and spline) and also on the section curve, plate and stiffener objects.
Edit: Modify operations of the native geometric entities (line, arc, and spline). These tool items
work on native geometric entities, but not on the section curve, plate and stiffener objects.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 153

C.2 Draw Tools

C.2.1 Lines

1. Click on the Line button. A command window should appear in the bottom region as
shown here:

Note: If you cannot see this command prompt, click on the button in
the bottom-left corner and “pin” it by clicking the horizontal pin button as
shown here.
When the command window is pinned, the pin icon flips to the vertical
orientation. When you click it in this configuration, the window is
unpinned, and is once again hidden from view.
If you still have problems viewing, you can click on the graphics window once.
2. After the command window appears, you can either pick a point on the screen to start
the line, or enter the start point (X, Y format) and press Enter.

You can enter (or pick) as many points as needed when the prompt asks for ‘Next
Point’.
3. After the desired line segment(s) are drawn, right-click to end the line command.

4. To draw a closed boundary, type “C” (as shown here) and press Enter.

154 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

C.2.2 Arcs

Click on the Arc button.

A command window should appear in the bottom region as shown here.
Note: If the command window does not open, follow the instructions as described in
Section C.2.1, Lines.

An arc is always drawn anti-clockwise. Drawing an arc has three options: By Center
Point, 3p & E3p. By default, the arc is drawn by specifying its center point, the radius,
the start angle, and the end angle.

C.2.2.1 By Center Point

Specify the center point of the arc (by clicking on the screen or keying in the X,Y
coordinate in the dialog box) and key in the radius, start angle and end angle of the arc.

C.2.2.2 By 3p
Enter 3p in the box as shown and press Enter.

This will prompt you to enter 3 points sequentially. You can either pick on graphics or
enter the points in X, Y format. The sequence of the points is first point, second point,
and any other point on the arc.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 155

The following image shows when the system asks for the third point.

Note: The second point and any other point on the arc (third point) should follow an anti-
clockwise direction.

C.2.2.3 By E3p
This option is the same as 3p except the sequence of the points are start point, midpoint,
and end point in anti-clockwise direction.

C.2.3 Splines

1. Click on the Spline button. A command window should appear in the bottom region
as shown below.
Note: If the command window does not appear, follow the instructions as described
in Section C.2.1, Lines.
Splines can be drawn by clicking control points on the graphics or entering the points
in X, Y format in the command window.
You can choose the curve nature from following options: Fitting & Control Points.
2. Type the first letter of the choice (f or c) in the command prompt and press Enter.

156 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

By default, it is fitting curve. At this stage, you can also enter (pick) the first point
without entering the spline type. The system will assume it is the “fitting” type.

3. Now the system will ask for the points through which the curve will be drawn. After
entering all the points, right-click to end the curve drawing.
Note: If the curve nature is fitting, system will ask for the start tangent and end
tangent as additional inputs.

4. You can enter the tangent direction or right-click (or press the ESC button) to accept
the default tangent.

C.3 Snap Tools

An object snap (Osnap) mode specifies a snap point at an exact location on an object.
Osnap also works on section curve, plate & stiffener.
The snap point on an object can be:
 Endpoint  Intersection (one point)
 Midpoint  Perpendicular
 Center  Nearest (any point on the object)

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 157

C.4 Edit Tools

These tools work only on the native geometric entities (line, arc, and spline).
Erase: On clicking this button, the system asks you to select the object(s) to delete. You
can pick the object(s) one by one or do a box selection. After the selection is done, press
Enter or right-click.
Move: On clicking this button, the system asks you to select the object(s) to move. You
can pick the object(s) one by one or do a box selection. After the selection is done, press
Enter or right-click. The system will then ask for the source point (reference start point)
and To Point.

Copy: On clicking this button, the system asks you to select the object(s) to copy. You
can pick the object(s) one by one or do a box selection. After the selection is done, press
Enter or right-click. The system will then ask for the source point (reference start point)
and To Point. (Command prompt same as Move option).
Fillet: With the Fillet command, you can connect two lines, two arcs, or one arc with a
line (these two objects must have at least one common point either visible, or in their
extension), with an arc with a specific radius. The value of the radius has some
restrictions depending on the position of the objects. If radius=0, the objects are either
extended until they intersect each other in one point (if there was not an intersection
point) or trimmed (if an intersection point is visible).
On clicking on the button, the system will ask for the fillet radius 1st. 1st object and 2nd
object.

158 ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide

Trim: With the Trim command you can trim objects at a cutting edge that is defined by
other objects. First select the objects that define the cutting edges at which you want to
trim an object, and then select the object. Objects that can be trimmed include arcs,
circles, elliptical arcs, and lines.

Extend: With the Extend command, you can extend lines, arcs, and polylines until they
intersect with some other object that is used as the limit of the extension. Firstly you have
to select the objects that consist the limits of the extension. Then you have to choose a
point at an object that you want to extend. If the object you want to extend does not
intersect with above objects then nothing will happen.

C.5 Convert Geometry

After the geometry is drawn using the CAD tools, you must click on the ‘Structure
Definition’ in the workflow tree.

A property window will appear on the right. Select the desired section type from the list
and then click the Apply button.

ABS Eagle FPSO-ISE User Guide 159

At this stage, the system will ask you to select the native entity (or entities) that need to
be converted. Use pick/box selection method to select entities and right-click.

The section curve will be created, and the entry will be shown in the work flow tree.
Section curve will turn blue as shown in the picture on the right.

Now you can lay plates and stiffeners on this section curve. For guidance on laying plates
and stiffeners, see Section 6.2 Laying Plates and Stiffeners.
