DECEMBER 2016
This Guide becomes effective when it is downloaded and installed as part of the software installation.
We welcome your feedback. Comments or suggestions can be sent electronically by email to
CustomerServiceCenter@eagle.org.
Initial Scantling Evaluation (ISE) software has the following features to make data entry
easy for an ISE analysis:
Graphical interactivity for updating bulk data.
Template-defined midship cross sections based on key dimensions, resulting in
minimal modeling time.
Uniform user interface standardized with property window.
Graphical display of longitudinal rule checks.
Simplicity in import of existing projects.
With FPSO version 3.0 and later, SEAS software is embedded in ISE.
Note the following known limitation and workarounds to use when using FPSO-ISE:
The Region and Language setting on your PC must be set to English (United
States). See Section 2.2, Setting the Region and Language on your PC for
instructions on performing this setup.
Project names are limited to seven (7) characters, and cannot contain spaces.
The project path directory cannot contain spaces.
When laying plates, every location that involves an intersection (e.g., at the
intersection of the bottom and a bottom girder, or the side and a side stringer)
requires a virtual plate end, even though the plate does not physically end at that
location.
Stiffeners should not be located at the ends of a plate. They should be offset by at
least 3 mm from either end of a plate.
If the data is created by importing from an earlier version of FPSO, the user must
delete and redefine all the tank(s).
If the order of definition of 2D Tanks is changed or 2D Tanks are redefined, the
3D tanks need to be redefined.
If the plate definition is changed, the 2D and 3D tanks need to be redefined.
Although the order of plates or stiffeners can be sorted, the sorted results will not
be saved.
Although the interface does not limit the number of stiffeners on transverse
bulkhead, the rule program only accepts up to five (5) stiffeners.
1. If the FPSO software is not already installed, install it now and obtain a license by
following the instructions included in the Release Notes for your version of FPSO.
2. Double-click the FPSO desktop icon to launch FPSO software.
3. If the operating system displays a confirmation message, click Yes to allow FPSO to
launch.
The following navigation screen displays:
4. Click ISE.

the Tree View using the saved input files (e.g., Longitudinal,
Transverse, etc.).
Longitudinal Options that link to steps in the Longitudinal section of the
work flow structure tree.
Fatigue Options that link to steps in the Fatigue section of the work
flow structure tree.
Transverse Options that link to steps in the Transverse section of the
work flow structure tree.
Utility Provides access to HGUS, Shear evaluation, and generation
of X3P and X3S files.
SEAS Provides access to the SEAS application for Seakeeping and
SEAS analyses.
Note: The SEAS option is available only with New Build and
Conversion projects (not with Tanker projects).
Export Project Data Exports project files (.FPSO) and a few other input files (like
WXR, etc.) that are required for sharing a project.
The Tools ribbon provides tools for modifying sections within a cross-section, as well as
tools to provide focus on plate, stiffeners, and tank, both at a global level, and at the local,
structure level.
To access the Tools ribbon, first add a cross section in the tree control by right-clicking
the Cross Sections node and choosing “Add Cross Section” from the pop-up menu.
Within the new section folder, select either the “Longitudinal” tree control item, or its
enclosed Structure Definition item to activate the Tools menu.
The Tools menu options can be used to modify graphics display and create a cross
section using CAD features. For details on using the CAD features, see Appendix C.
Group/Component Description
Draw This group contains all the tools for constructing CAD
images, such as lines, arcs, and splines.
Snaps Object snap options specify snap point(s) at an exact location
on an object. These tools work on native geometric entities
(lines, arcs, and splines) and also on the section curve, plate
or stiffener objects.
The snap point on an object can be as follows:
Endpoint
Midpoint
Center
Perpendicular
Nearest (any point on an object)
Intersection (one point)
Edit Use these tools to modify native geometric entities (lines,
arcs, and splines). These tools do not work on section curve,
plate, or stiffener objects.
The Report ribbon provides commands to view various reports based on evaluations
carried out from the Home menu.
This is the top level as identified by the name assigned to the project at project creation.
Information entered here pertains to the entire vessel.
User-Defined Files
As mentioned above, user-defined files are files that the user defines by inputting specific
values into a property window or data table. The application then creates the file by
inserting those values into a pre-defined format.
The user can check the contents of the following user-defined files, created at General
Data entry:
INP
BST
FLY
SMB (for tanker)
4.2 Libraries
The libraries are a set of files that provide the application with information associated
with the materials, structural elements, and wave factors associated with an ISE project
for a specific vessel.
Libraries can be developed as original files, using the library utilities listed below. Files
thus created apply to the project by default.
However, the user can also import library files from a previously developed project, as
explained in the following.
4.2.4 Stiffener
When the user clicks the Stiffener Library link, the Stiffener Library utility opens.
Stiffeners that are defined through the Stiffener Library utility and opened within FPSO
ISE are automatically available to the project.
As of version 3.0, FPSO provides many different ways to import data from existing
projects, saving time and effort in creation of various vessel analysis parts. This section
explains how Import functionality works.
In general, each import command opens a Windows Explorer dialog that is used to
navigate to the file containing the data to be imported. After the file has been selected,
there may be other options before the data is imported from the source project to the
target project being analyzed.
Project Data Files – Import project data file, and one or more cross sections.
Note: For FPSO Conversion, after importing project data from a previous version, users
MUST right-click on the <project name> node to “Import SEAS data”.
Libraries can be imported all in one command, or by right-click and import command for
specific libraries.
Note: Although the Material Table and Wave Directional Factor are listed in this section,
they do not consist of named library files, and thus cannot be imported by the Import
command.
During Cross Section Data imports, the system imports cross sections, including
longitudinal, 2D tanks, 3D tanks, Fatigue, and Slosh data.
Note: For FPSO Conversion, after importing project data from a previous version, users
must right-click the respective Cross-Sections node to “Import-As-Built” data.
Cross sections can be managed both from the Cross Sections level and from the level of a
specifically named cross section.
Import All Cross A table is displayed with a row for each added cross section.
Sections
For each created cross section:
1. Click the navigation link, navigate to the desired cross
section to be imported, and click OK.
2. Define the Cross Section XAP.
3. Click the Select button.
4. Click Import.
A new cross section is created and listed in the work flow as the next sequential
Section number.
A blank properties window for the new cross section is also generated and displayed.
Cross Section information is displayed in the Properties window.

These values are to be used in a cross section that is
outside 0.4 amidships, if envelope curves are
submitted. Otherwise, leave these at 0.
3. Select Template 1.
A hull outline is displayed:
The following context menu options are available for basic cross section management
operation.
1. Right-click the named cross section link.
The context menu appears.
Command Result
Copy Make a copy of the selected cross section. A new cross section
appears that is named “Copy of <Section Name>“. It can then be
modified manually, or cross section information can be imported.
In the Longitudinal portion of the tree-view work flow, geometric curves defined in the
template are populated with plates and stiffeners, and tanks are defined.
Plates Interface
Stiffeners Interface
After generating the geometry, populate each structure first with plates, and then with
stiffeners. Only three sections are explained below, but all other sections are populated
with the same methodology.
NOTES:
1. For the Along parameter, three distance measurements are available:
Girth – This is the distance along the geometry from the beginning of the section
type to the end. The remaining girth is displayed each time another plate or
stiffener group is added.
Horizontal_From_CL – This is the distance from the centerline to the point at
which the plate or stiffener group begins.
Vertical_From_BL – This is the distance from the baseline upward to the point
at which the plate or stiffener group begins.
2. Stiffeners should not be located at the ends of a plate. Give them a distance at least
3mm from either end of a plate.
To bulk edit the plate properties, such as Material, highlight the plate rows as shown
here (in orange), then change the property in the Property Editor window.
Note: The Stiffener Group table should be used only to set up the location, spacing
and number of stiffeners in the stiffener groups for a section. After the groups are
defined, the Stiffener List table can be used to modify the properties of the stiffener
(such as profile, material, etc.) defined below.
2. Fill in the Stiffener Groups table:
The ID is inserted by the application.
a. Select the Along value from the list box (same as Plate).
b. For the Input parameter, specify the length from the beginning of the section to
the first stiffener for the ‘Girth’ option, or the location from the CL for the
“Horizontal_From_CL” option, and from the baseline for the “Vertical from BL”
option.
c. For the Spacing parameter, specify the distance between stiffeners.
d. For the No. of Stiffeners parameter, specify the number of stiffeners in the
group.
e. For the Orientation parameter, above the table, specify a Normal or Reverse
orientation from the list box.
Unsupported Span
The Stiffener Property window displays the properties of each stiffener in the group.
As with the plates, the properties window for stiffeners can be used to modify
stiffener properties such as profile, material, etc. in bulk.
Notes:
1. The ID in the Stiffener List matches the ID in the Stiffener Property
window.
2. If any values in the Stiffener group table are changed, the stiffener properties
in the Stiffener List tables must be redefined.
A few differences for the Bottom, as well as other longer structures, are important:
Every location that involves a knuckle (e.g., at the juncture of the bottom and a
bottom girder or the side and a side stringer) requires a virtual plate end: a
defined plate ended, even though the plate does not physically end at that
location.
The first plate is defined in the same way that a plate is defined for the Keel
Plate.
Note: Because the entire geometry is a straight line perpendicular to the centerline
and extending transversely toward the side, for the Along parameter, either the Girth
value or the Horizontal_from_CL value can be selected, with identical results.
If the specified number of plates at least equals the Remaining Girth value, the
application inserts a sufficient number of identical plates to traverse the girth
until less than one plate length remains. Then the application inserts a final plate
that exactly fits the remaining space along the geometry.
If the user inputs a greater number than the length can accommodate, the
application inserts only enough plates to traverse the length.
Example 1: Bilge
For evaluation against the Rules, a series of straight plates suffice, of equal or
approximated equal lengths. Three plates are sufficient, although more can be used if
desired.
6.2.2.2 Stiffeners
Because a longer section type uses more stiffeners than the keel plate, and may use
multiple kinds of stiffeners, section types like the Bottom section also have some
differences.
As with plates and stiffeners, tanks are defined both with the graphic interface and an
editing table:
Category/Property Description
2D Tank
3. Click each additional space in the cross section, and fill in data table for each tank.
4. Save the project to retain generated tanks that can be used in a project.
The Tank 3D data table shows tanks whose 2D shape was defined in 2D Tank Definition.
Z1 (m) is the distance from AP to the reference point of the structural model (in meters).
6.4 Fatigue
For each stiffener, the values are pre-populated using those specified during Stiffener
Definition. Here, except for “Stiffener”, “TankID” and “AdjTankID”, other values
can be changed and Fatigue assessment performed during a working session.
Assuming a Web spacing = 3.70 m and X_AP of the 2nd bulkhead = 115.365, the
first two locations would be:
Location #1: 115.365 – (3.70/2) =113.515
Location #2: 115.365 + (3.70/2) =117.215
Assuming X_AP of the 3rd bulkhead = 152.365, the next two locations would be:
Location #3: 152.365 – (3.70/2) =150.515
Location #4: 152.365 + (3.70/2) =154.215
Location IDs greater than 4 (i.e., 5, 6, 7, 8) are of type “Special”. For these IDs,
actual locations from the Reference point of the structural model are user-specified.

A new cross section is created under the “Cross Section” node of the tree control by right-clicking
it and choosing the ‘Add Cross Section’ operation. After doing it, the following changes happen
to the tree control.
Once activated, you can use the Tools menu items to do graphics operation.
The different groups are:
Draw: All the construction tools.
Snap: All the location picking utilities. These tool items work on native geometric entities (line,
arc, and spline) and also on the section curve, plate and stiffener objects.
Edit: Modify operations of the native geometric entities (line, arc, and spline). These tool items
work on native geometric entities, but not on the section curve, plate and stiffener objects.
C.2.1 Lines
1. Click on the Line button. A command window should appear in the bottom region as
shown here:
Note: If you cannot see this command prompt, click on the button in
the bottom-left corner and “pin” it by clicking the horizontal pin button as
shown here.
When the command window is pinned, the pin icon flips to the vertical
orientation. When you click it in this configuration, the window is
unpinned, and is once again hidden from view.
If you still have problems viewing, you can click on the graphics window once.
2. After the command window appears, you can either pick a point on the screen to start
the line, or enter the start point (X, Y format) and press Enter.
You can enter (or pick) as many points as needed when the prompt asks for ‘Next
Point’.
3. After the desired line segment(s) are drawn, right-click to end the line command.
4. To draw a closed boundary, type “C” (as shown here) and press Enter.
An arc is always drawn anti-clockwise. Drawing an arc has three options: By Center
Point, 3p & E3p. By default, the arc is drawn by specifying its center point, the radius,
the start angle, and the end angle.
C.2.2.2 By 3p
Enter 3p in the box as shown and press Enter.
This will prompt you to enter 3 points sequentially. You can either pick on graphics or
enter the points in X, Y format. The sequence of the points is first point, second point,
and any other point on the arc.
Note: The second point and any other point on the arc (third point) should follow an anti-
clockwise direction.
C.2.2.3 By E3p
This option is the same as 3p except the sequence of the points are start point, midpoint,
and end point in anti-clockwise direction.
C.2.3 Splines
1. Click on the Spline button. A command window should appear in the bottom region
as shown below.
Note: If the command window does not appear, follow the instructions as described
in Section C.2.1, Lines.
Splines can be drawn by clicking control points on the graphics or entering the points
in X, Y format in the command window.
You can choose the curve nature from following options: Fitting & Control Points.
2. Type the first letter of the choice (f or c) in the command prompt and press Enter.
3. Now the system will ask for the points through which the curve will be drawn. After
entering all the points, right-click to end the curve drawing.
Note: If the curve nature is fitting, system will ask for the start tangent and end
tangent as additional inputs.
4. You can enter the tangent direction or right-click (or press the ESC button) to accept
the default tangent.
An object snap (Osnap) mode specifies a snap point at an exact location on an object.
Osnap also works on section curve, plate & stiffener.
The snap point on an object can be:
Endpoint Intersection (one point)
Midpoint Perpendicular
Center Nearest (any point on the object)
These tools work only on the native geometric entities (line, arc, and spline).
Erase: On clicking this button, the system asks you to select the object(s) to delete. You
can pick the object(s) one by one or do a box selection. After the selection is done, press
Enter or right-click.
Move: On clicking this button, the system asks you to select the object(s) to move. You
can pick the object(s) one by one or do a box selection. After the selection is done, press
Enter or right-click. The system will then ask for the source point (reference start point)
and To Point.
Copy: On clicking this button, the system asks you to select the object(s) to copy. You
can pick the object(s) one by one or do a box selection. After the selection is done, press
Enter or right-click. The system will then ask for the source point (reference start point)
and To Point. (Command prompt same as Move option).
Fillet: With the Fillet command, you can connect two lines, two arcs, or one arc with a
line (these two objects must have at least one common point either visible, or in their
extension), with an arc with a specific radius. The value of the radius has some
restrictions depending on the position of the objects. If radius=0, the objects are either
extended until they intersect each other in one point (if there was not an intersection
point) or trimmed (if an intersection point is visible).
On clicking on the button, the system will ask for the fillet radius 1st. 1st object and 2nd
object.
Extend: With the Extend command, you can extend lines, arcs, and polylines until they
intersect with some other object that is used as the limit of the extension. Firstly you have
to select the objects that consist the limits of the extension. Then you have to choose a
point at an object that you want to extend. If the object you want to extend does not
intersect with above objects then nothing will happen.
A property window will appear on the right. Select the desired section type from the list
and then click the Apply button.
The section curve will be created, and the entry will be shown in the work flow tree.
Section curve will turn blue as shown in the picture on the right.
Now you can lay plates and stiffeners on this section curve. For guidance on laying plates
and stiffeners, see Section 6.2 Laying Plates and Stiffeners.
