ACUTE ABDOMINAL PAIN

 Identify common causes of abdominal pain (including appendicitis, gall stone disease, pancreatitis, peptic
ulcer disease) and have an understanding of the demographics and risk factors associated with each cause
 Describe key questions from the history and findings from the examination which help differentiate between
causes of acute abdominal pain
 Have an understanding of a ‘surgical sieve’ to help identify the cause of abdominal pain.
 Describe what bedside, clinical, laboratory and radiological investigations would be appropriate to
investigate a patient with acute abdominal pain
 Understand the pathophysiology and basic management of the common causes
