PROBLEM #1: Poor English Vocabulary

Solution: Let the students read more to broaden their vocabulary.

I believe that letting the students read more will enhance their mastery in vocabulary.
Also, it will pave a way for them to develop their vocabulary skills in order to understand the
words used in a text. Expanding your vocabulary can do more than improve your reading and
writing skills. By having several words at their disposal for describing an event or emotion, they
can be explicit when sharing their ideas and opinions. It helps your child understand what other
people are saying and what she/he is reading. Vocabulary is the foundation for comprehension
because it boosts the students’ power of persuasion.

PROBLEM #2: Reading with no Understanding

Solutions: Compensatory Program and Supplemental Program

Students who read well orally and appear to decode words easily can still have poor
comprehension of what they read. In the past, researchers have suggested that these students
may focus on decoding to the exclusion of meaning. I believe general language deficit exists in
those students who did not comprehend either what they read or what was read to them at their
oral-reading level. Remediation in language and vocabulary development, as well as practice in
listening comprehension is needed to close the gap between oral reading and comprehension
levels. In addition, reading should be encouraged at their current comprehension level rather
than at their oral reading level. At this level, students should begin to find reading more
rewarding, leading them to read more, further improving their vocabulary and comprehension.

PROBLEM #3: Low attention span

Solution: Be creative, make it physical, practice attentive behavior, adjust the task, turn it with a
game, and break down the task

Providing a set of activities to enhance students learning will arouse their attention and
interest. By doing so, you can create a fun environment that will draw your students more to the
lesson. Designing learning friendly environments can turn dull, boring classrooms into student-
friendly havens of learning. From seating arrangements to enhanced lighting, to creating
discrete learning zones with different themes and purposes, a learning friendly classroom can
greatly enhance the learning experience for students. However, if taken to the extreme, what
started out as a learning friendly environment can become one big distraction. These days,
students spend a fair amount of their time after school at home working on projects, studying for
tests, and otherwise completing homework. Having a distraction free environment and routine is
a key to allowing the students to have a productive learning experience.

PROBLEM #4: Language Anxiety

Solution: Design pronunciation drills and incorporate teaching other skills.

It’s not very uncommon for second-language speakers to hesitate when it comes to
using what they’ve learned. This is especially true for students who have had very limited
experience using the language in real-world interactions. Getting over anxiety and using the
language, for the most part, is all about the intent and execution. You have to make it your goal
to use the language at specific times and follow through. On order to overcome language
anxiety, it is best to get to know the language more and use it often to be able to get used of
speaking the language.
