In-class activity 1: Discussion questions

Discuss the following in class:
1. Explain the skill-sets that successful expatriates can acquire/cultivate when on an
expatriate assignment.

2. Discuss some effective global cadre development strategies.

3. What are some of the vital skill-sets that global managers need to possess?

In-class activity 2: Ongoing Semester Case Study – Businessville Hotel.

The manager of the Beijing Businessville Hotel is leaving to be the manager of a new
hotel elsewhere. Around the World Hotels, the parent company of Beijing Businessville
Hotel decides to send one of its very successful managers from Australia to China to
manage the Beijing Businessville Hotel.

Your role is to train the new manager so you will need to formulate an information sheet
for that person. You might like to consider which aspects of Chinese life and culture will
be different from that in Australia, what the company can do to ensure that the new
manager makes a successful transition, what training will need to be supplied

In-class activity 3: Video Case – Global HRM

After viewing the video you will be asked to engage in a group discussion based on the
following questions:
 What factors, other than those discussed in the video, do you think might have
contributed to the situation?
 What else do you think the company could have done to prepare this person for
the overseas assignment?
 What should the company do with that employee now?

In-class activity 4: Student Presentation Case Study.

Students to present solutions to Q 10-7, 10-8 & 10-9 of case study titled ‘Expatriate
Management as AstraZeneca’ on pages 431-433 of the textbook. Audience to prepare
discussion points for the questions.

In-class activity 5: In-class multi-choice quiz.

Print out the quiz for the students and administer in class. Students will be given 10 mns
to attempt the quiz. Discuss the solutions in class. This quiz serves as a good revision
exercise.
