Welcome to 10th grade English! I am looking forward to the opportunity to work together to develop
our understanding of English Language Arts. We will collaboratively analyze literature in depth;
studying argumentative, narrative, expository and informative text, and producing complex writing
assignments. This standard-based course will continue to build on the knowledge and skills acquired
in earlier grades and will allow students refine their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. I
have high expectations for you and I will support your efforts to reach our course goals.

Course Goals
1) To build a strong foundation for the study of English Language Arts. 

2) To explore and develop a deeper understanding of the English Language by studying its
relevance in historical documents, social connections and problem solving strategies.
3) To develop a deeper understanding of the mechanics of language.
4) To analyze the importance of language in a global world.

5) To construct arguments and collaborate with your classmates. 

6) To develop a grade-appropriate academic vocabulary.

Content Goals – Instructional time will focus on the following critical areas:
1) Students will demonstrate listening, speaking, writing, and reading through a variety of short
stories.
2) Students will demonstrate persuasive speaking skills dealing with a current topic of reform.
3) Students will demonstrate speaking, reading, and research skills while studying The Necklace.
4) Students will demonstrate speaking, listening, writing, reading, and research skills while
studying The Metamorphosis.
5) Students will demonstrate listening, writing, and reading, through a variety of poetry.
6) Students will demonstrate speaking, listening, reading, and research skills while studying
Mythology.
7) Students will use accurately general academic and domain-specific words and phrases,
sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at college and career readiness level.

Attendance
It is very important to be in class each day as we build upon that which we learn. If you do miss a
class, it is your responsibility to make up the missed work. Speak to your classmates and/or me
regarding support. All assignments and directions are posted on Schoology.

Tardiness
All students are to be seated by the time the tardy bell rings working on daily warm up. Two tardies
will result in an “S” and three or more tardies will result in a “U” in work habits per grading period.

Electronic Devices
As per LAUSD, electronic devices must be in your backpack (not visible) and turned to off or vibrate.

Food and Drinks


Food or drinks other than water are not allowed in class.
Grade Weighting
 20% Procedural Checkpoints – (notebook checks, participation, rough drafts, etc.) 

 20% Tests – (unit tests, essays, close reads, quizzes)
 20% Coursework – (homework, projects, group coursework, etc.) 

 30% Mastery Exams – (individual, midterm and final, essays, presentations) 

 10% Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC) & Interim Assessments (Fall & Spring)

90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60–69% = D
0 -59% = F
Required Materials 

1) Composition Notebook
2) Lined paper (college-ruled)
3) Pens and Pencils (mechanical pencils are fine but make sure to have extra lead)

Classroom Rules and Expectations – (THE 5 P’s)


1. PROMPT: be in your seat when the bell rings and prepared to work.
2. PREPARED: be ready to begin class when the bell rings, and expect to work hard. 

BE 3. PRODUCTIVE: participate in group discussions, take notes and ask questions. 

4. POSITIVE: dedication, enthusiasm, strong effort and a positive attitude.
5. POLITE: treat everyone as you would like to be treated

Consequences

This isn’t the order in which consequences will be given. Consequences depend on the severity of the infraction.
