Instructor: Mrs. Meadows

E-mail: kmeadows@ssisd.net
Weebly: sshs-meadows.weebly.com
Course Description: This course is designed to build on the knowledge obtained through your previous science
classes and prepare the student for further science study. Science is better understood through the use of
experimentation; therefore, this course will be spent on approximately 60% lecture and 40% lab exploration.
Expectations for Successful Learning & other important information: All campus guidelines are in the
STUDENT/PARENT/GUARDIAN HANDBOOK 2018-2019. My individual classroom rules are listed below. Each
student and parent will be asked to sign their syllabus to signify their agreement and understanding of these
guidelines. If ever there are any concerns, please do not hesitate to email me or set up a conference, and I will do
the same. I love to talk through any concerns with students and parents, so we are all on the same page and the
line of communication is always open.
 Be prepared to learn and actively participate as well as taking responsibility for your own learning
 No cheating allowed, if occurs will result in a zero
 Treat your classmates, teachers, and others’ property with respect. Zero tolerance for rude and/or
disrespectful behavior (In the event that a substitute teacher is present in the classroom, students should
be on their best behavior. If failure to do so then disciplinary actions will be taken immediately)
 Be present and on time to class
 Be cooperative and not disruptive
 Bring necessary materials to class (this includes laptop)
 Work hard and respect yourself
 No food or drinks allowed in classroom except bottled water.
 No cell phones allowed during class or will be taken up by the teacher and turned into the office.
 Observe and follow all lab safety guidelines.
 When integrating technology into our classroom, students should only be working on the assignment
issued. (No Games or Web Surfing allowed)
Consequences: All rules in the student handbook will be implemented in my classroom
1st Offense: Student-Teacher Discussion
2nd Offense: Parent-Teacher communication
3rd Offense: Office Referral
Cell Phone Policy: Upon entering the classroom, all cell phones should be put away and not visible. If a student is
using his/her phone during class, the teacher will take up the phone, and turned in to the office. Students have a
laptop and should not need their phones for any reason. Please remember that the best way to get in touch with
your child is to relay a message through the office or e-mail a teacher.

Lab Safety: Students will perform lab experiments throughout the school year. During these experiments, students
are expected to follow all safety rules and regulations. Any failure to follow instructions and safety precautions, in
the lab, will result in the student being expelled from the classroom until the experiment is completed by the class,
and a zero in the gradebook as the grade earned on the lab assignment.

Grading Procedures: Students will receive a minimum of 18 daily grades per nine weeks (2 grades per week) as
well as 3 test grades per nine weeks. Students will be allowed to replace two low daily grade per nine weeks via
extra credit assignment. Please log in to Skyward, frequently, to see grades and check for missing assignments.
Grades will be updated quickly, and this is a great way to stay ahead on final grades
 Daily assignments count as 50% of the nine weeks’ grade
 Tests count as the other 50% of the nine weeks’ grade

Late assignments: Student work will receive a minus 20 points per day the assignment is late. After the third day it
will result in an automatic zero and will not be accepted after 3 days late as stated in the handbook. Please be sure
all work in turned in on the due date!

Make-up Work: Any time a student misses class, the student is responsible for taking the initiative to meet with the
teacher about missing work, notes, assignments, or test. Students are responsible for all information covered
during their absences. This should be taken care of outside of the classroom time to prevent further loss of material.

Re-Do Work: Daily assignments make not be retaken or made up. Test may be retaken in an effort to better
understand concepts and receive an increase in grade. Maximum score on any test retakes will receive a
maximum score of 75%. Any attempt to increase a test grade the student must attend at least one tutorial to better
understand the material and then retake may only be completed during tutorials. Tutorials will be offered either
before or after school, depending upon the teacher’s schedule. The student will have have three full school days
from the date of the original test to get the re-test completed.

Supplies: Throughout the school year we will be using a lot of supplies. If you are able to help out in bringing any
of the following it is greatly appreciated.

 Kleenex

Social Media: Throughout the school year, there will be times when in my classroom we will be very active on
social media (Twitter). This is for educational purposes and to increase the learning environment outside of our
classroom. As well as share to the district what exciting things are going on in the science department.
