 Definition of Diesel
 Diesel fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons obtained by distillation of
crude oil. The important properties which are used to characterize
diesel fuel include cetane number (or cetane index), fuel volatility,
density, viscosity, cold behavior, and sulfur content. Diesel fuel
specifications differ for various fuel grades and in different countries.
DIESEL POWER PLANTS
 The diesel burns inside the engine and the combustion
process moves a fluid that turns the engine shaft and drives
the alternator. The alternator in turn, converts mechanical
energy into electrical energy.
 This type of electricity generating power station will
probably be used a long time into the future, due to a need
for reliable stand-by electrical source for emergency
situations.
 However, diesel power plants emit green house gases that
pollute the environment and also require frequent servicing.
Automotives and Mainly Power Plants
 Distillate Fuel Oil Definition: A general classification for
one of the petroleum fractions produced in conventional
distillation operations. It includes diesel fuels and fuel oils.
Products known as No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 diesel fuel are
used in on-highway diesel engines, such as those in trucks
and automobiles, as well as off-highway engines, such as
those in railroad locomotives and agricultural machinery.
Products known as No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 fuel oils are used
primarily for space heating and electric power generation.

Diesel Power Plant Categories:

 Stationary Diesel Power Plants

 Mobile Diesel Power Plants

Stationary Diesel Power Plants
 use four-stroke diesel engines (less frequently, two-
stroke diesel engines), with power ratings of 110, 220, 330,
440, and 735 kilowatts (kW).Stationary diesel power plants
are classed as average in their power rating if the rating does not
exceed 750 kW; large diesel power plants can have a
power rating of 2,200 kW or more.
• usually equipped with synchronous generators.
Stationary Diesel Power Plants
 Three levels of automation for stationary diesels
 automatic regulation of the rotational speed(rpm) and of the tem
perature of the cooling water and oil, along with automatic emerg
ency signaling and protection in theevent of a breakdown
 automatic or remotely controlled start-
up and shutdown of the diesel engines, an automatic check of
conditions required for connecting load to the line, synchronizatio
n with other units and with the power system, and a load
connection and load distribution with units operating in parallel
 automatic refilling of the feeder tanks for fuel, oil, and
water and of the air feed vessels, an automatic (trickle) charging of
start-up batteries and of batteries used in auxiliary
operations, and automatic control of the auxiliary equipment.
Mobile Diesel Power Plants
 widely used in agriculture and forestry and by expeditions in
volved with geological exploration.
 Automated diesel power plants
with a power rating up to 10 kW are often mounted on a sin
gle axle truck trailer; power plants rated 20 kW or more are
usually installed on two-axle, covered trailers.

Advantages and Disadvantages of
Diesel Power Plant
Advantages of Diesel Power Plant
 Diesel power plant design is simple for installation.
 The layout of the diesel power plant is quite simple.
 The limited quantity of cooling water required.
 Standby losses are very less as compared to other Power plants.
 Low fuel cost for operation.
 Smaller storage is needed for the fuel.
 There is no problem of ash handling.
 For small capacity power generation, diesel power plant is more
efficient than the steam power plant.
 Quickly started and put on load.
 They can respond to varying loads without having any difficulty.
Disadvantages of Diesel Power Plant
 High Maintenance and operating cost.
 The plant cost per kW power is comparatively more.
 The working life of diesel power plant is small due to high
maintenance.
 The plant produces too much noise.
 Diesel power plants are tough to construct for large scale.
Trivia ni koya JM
 Thomas Edison built the first power plant, and in 1882 his
Pearl Street Power Station sent electricity to 85 buildings.
People were initially afraid of electricity and parents would
not let their children near the lights.
Interesting Fact
 Not a single engineer made it off the Titanic. They stayed
back and kept the power on so that others could escape.
