Subject: RE: Relays Settings

Dear Mr.Yogender,

Pls find the clarifications on the discussed points:

1. GT Over fluxing setting – 99GT:

The existing setting K1 = 1.1, K2 = 1.1, Vn = 110V & Fn = 50Hz.

The relay operation for IDMT is between 121V (110*K1) to 133.1V (121*K2). Beyond 133.1V the Instantaneous
element is going to operate.

Pls note that RL2 shall be picking up for IDMT or Instantaneous Protection.

Op. time for stage 1 (IDMT operating time) V/f = K1* (Vn/Fn)

If the Voltage raises to 127.05 V (1.05 times of K1* Vn) the operating time shall be 149 secs (from the chart as
mentioned below for your ready reference.

For stage 2, the operating time will be instantaneous. The operating time for stage 2 is (K1*K2* Vn/Fn).

Proposed Setting in P643 for GT over fluxing setting:

The Op. time of the relay for IDMT element (stage 1) t = TMS/ ((V/f)measured/(V/f) trip setting)- 1)^2 where Vn =
110V; Fn = 50 Hz; The recommended settings for Stage 1 are V/f>1 set = 2.42, TMS = 0.25, Characteristics = IDMT.

1
Op. time if voltage is 101% of setting ie, 122.21V, V/F = 2.444 the operating time will be 2500 sec as per the
formula.
Op. time if voltage is 105% of setting ie, 127.05V, V/F = 2.541 the operating time will be 100 sec as per the formula

Pls note that the IDMT curves of both relays are not the same type, and since the GTs are little bit old hence we propose the
above setting.

Or alternatively we can propose all 4 stages as DT with 1.05%, 1.1%, 1.15% & 1.2%. Pls note that here 1.2% will be acting as
Highset with very marginal time delay to avoid maloperations during transients (may be 50msec).

2. GT Residual Over Voltage Protection – 64GT:

The existing settings of VDG14 Relay : PSM 5.4V , TMS 0.1.

The operating time for 2 times is approx. – 3.1 sec, 3 times is approx. – 1.9 sec, 4 times is approx. 1.5 sec. This can
be verified from the below figure.

The present adopted settings : 5 V & TMS – 0.5 of MiCOM P141 relay. The operating time shall be found t = K / ( M -
1)
where; K = Time multiplier setting, t = Operating time in seconds, M = Derived residual voltage/relay setting voltage
(VN> Voltage Set)

The operating time for 2 times is = 0.5/(2-1) = 0.5 sec

The operating time for 3 times is = 0.5/(3-1) = 0.25 sec
The operating time for 4 times is = 0.5/(4-1) = 0.17 sec

Hence if we change the TMS to 3 then we shall bring our curve closer to the existing curve.

2
The operating time for 2 times is = 3/(2-1) = 3.0 sec
The operating time for 3 times is = 3/(3-1) = 1.5 sec
The operating time for 4 times is = 3/(4-1) = 1.0 sec

We are recommending the settings in the lower level to be closer with VDG14 relay operating timings.

Pls find below the CBIP guidelines regarding the GT backup Earth fault protection for your ready reference, in which the
operating time is specified should be in the range of 0.5 to 5 sec which our relay confirms.

Trust this explanation is in line with your requirement and in case of any further clarifications pls feel free to contact us.

Sreenatha Rao R.S.N.V

Dear Mr.Yogender,

Further to the discussions we had today pls find the clarifications:

1. Reverse Power Settings:

We shall be using Sensitive Power Protection along with normal Reverse Power Protection.

The Reverse power protection settings shall be set at 0.1% of the which is 3 phase power setting and shall be operating on
the equation VaIaCosøa+VbIbCosøb+ VcIcCosøc. The recommended setting of this protection is 5W.

The Sensitive reverse power protection shall be connected with Rphase (series connection) 1 phase measurement and the
setting recommended is 2.5W (approx. 0.5%).

Pls note that in the system if there is a reverse power condition it shall be common in all the 3 phases hence using one
phase measurement relay shall be OK.

Pls find the relevant screen shot of CBIP guidelines for Reverse power/Low forward power setting recommendations
attached for your ready reference.

4
2. Over fluxing protection of GT:

Existing relay : GTTM 22

Adopted setting: K1 = 1.10; K2 = 1.10

Op. time for stage 1 (IDMT operating time) V/f = K1* Vn/Fn), where Vn = 110V; Fn = 50 Hz

5
If the Voltage raises to 121 V (1.1 times of Vn) the operating time shall be 55 secs (from the chart as mentioned
below for your ready reference.

110V; Fn = 50 Hz; The recommended settings for Stage 1 are V/f>1 set = 2.42, TMS = 0.45, Characteristics = IDMT.

Op. time if voltage is 110% of setting ie, 133.1V, V/F = 2.662 the operating time will be 45 sec as per the formula.
Op. time if voltage is 105% of setting ie, 127.0V, V/F = 2.541 the operating time will be 180 sec as per the formula.

The GT & UT Settings are also slightly modified to match with the present settings. Mr.Vijay Karthik shall be forwarding the
setting calculation sheets.

Trust this is clear as per our discussion and in case of any further clarifications pls feel free to contact us.
