 LINEAR WATERWAY- It is nothing but the
clear span of the bridge.
 Super structure- The components above the
level of bearings is called as super structure.
Super structure includes girders, deck slab,
footpath, kerbs and parapet walls.
 DISCHARGE CALCULATIONS USING RYVES
FORMULA
 Catchment area(A)- 552 sq.kms(213sq.miles)
 Type of catchment- hilly good
 Ryves coefficient(C)- 2000 as recommended by
technical committee for cauvery basin in 1983.
 Ryves formula-
 Design discharge(Q)= CA0.667
 = 2000*5520.667
 = 71459.37cusecs
 = 2020cumecs
 CALCULATION OF LINEAR WATERWAY
 Linear water way,L=C√Q
 Constant, C=4.4
 Design discharge, Q=2020cumecs
 L=4.4*√2020
 L=197.75m.

 Therefore the span of the bridge is 198m.

 Shear stresses are well within the safe
permissible limit for both end and
intermediate spans.
 Hence no shear reinforcement is required.
 Here for designing the girder we use courbon’s theory and
IRC class AA tracked loading.
 Here its assumed that cross girders are infinitely rigid. And
no flexure of transverse deck is possible.
 Here distribution coefficient, K=(ΣW/n)*(1+(neI1X1 /ΣI1X12 )
 W=eccentric concentrated load
 e=eccentricity
 n=number of longitudinal girder
 X1 =distance of girder under consideration from central axis
of deck
 I1 =moment of inertia of girder under consideration.
