Materials Used:
“H” Hook (5mm)– but I crochet a bit loosely. Use whatever size hook
you need to get the required size (8 inches) square.

GAUGE: Rounds 1 and 2 make a circle 2” in diameter.

Small amounts of each color worsted weight 4-ply acrylic: (see end of
pattern for international hints)
CA – center color
CB – petal color
CC – background color
CD – border color

It is recommended that you count your stitches as you go. A guide is

listed at the end of the pattern to help you.

With CA:
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd chain from hook; join with sl st to first sc (8 sc)
Rnd 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st. 2 dc in next stitch and in
each stitch around. Join with a sl st to 3rd
chain of first dc. (16 dc). Finish off.
Figure 1

When changing colors, make sure to keep your “old” color, both the
loop AND the free end, in FRONT of the
color you are working. You will need this
free for the next round.
Rnd 3A: Join CB in any dc with a sl st. ch 3, dc
in same st. dc in next st, ch 1. (2dc in next
st, dc in next st, ch 1) 7 times. Join with sl
stitch to 3rd chain of 1st dc. Pull up loop and
attach a stitch holder, keeping IN FRONT of
your work. You will have created a pattern of
2dc, 1dc, ch 1. In the next step, you will add
the CC to make 2 dc in each stitch, giving you
a pattern of 3dc of petal, then 1 dc of
background. (see figure 1)

Rnd 3B: Join CC with a sl st into the next CA

stitch (after your loop of CB) that only has 1
dc of CB from round 3A in it. Ch 7, working
in front of CB (see figure 1). (Skip past 3dc of
CB and dc into CA stitch from Round 2 that
only has 1 dc in it. ch 4.) 7 times Join with sl
st to 3rd ch of first CC dc, being careful to keep
the loop AND the free end of CB in front of CC.
Pull up a loop of CC and attach a stitch holder.

For rounds 3A and 3B: (32 dc, pattern of 3dc petal, 1 dc background around)
Rnd 4A: Working in
FRONT of CC from round
3B, put CB back on hook.
(Stitch CB into CB stitches
only) Ch 3. 2 dc in next
dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 3,
sk next CC dc. (Dc in
next CB dc, 2 dc in next
dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 3,

Join with sl st to 3rd ch of
first CB dc, being careful
to keep the loop AND the
free end of CC in front of
CB. Pull up a loop of CB
and attach a stitch holder,
keeping in front of your
work.

Rnd 4B: Working in front of CB from Round 4A, put CC back on hook. (Stitch
CC into CC stitches only) ch 3, dc in same st., ch 5. (Skip all CB stitches, 2
dc in next CC dc. Ch 5.) 7 times. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of first CC dc,
being careful to keep the loop AND the free end of CB in front of CC. Pull up
a loop of CC and attach a stitch holder, keeping in front of your work.

Second solid round of background should have 23 stitches corner to corner

on each side. (ch,trc,4dc,3hdc,5sc,3hdc,4dc,trc,ch)

_____________________________________________________________
Many have asked me how I join the squares or enlarge them. To enlarge the
squares, simply continue on in the same fashion as round 8. You can add
more colors of background before putting on a border this way. To make the
afghans I add one more round of the background color only. Then I join the
squares. You can use any joining method you wish – whipstitch, slipstitch,
single crochet. I have used them all with the same results on the front of the
afghan.

International Hints:
This is based on what people have sent to me already:

Australian 12-ply yarn gives the required thickness yarn. 8-ply is a little too
thin.

India crocheters will need to double the yarn and work with two strands.
