Cans

 Cans are placed on tubular members to increase strength and satisfy

conditions for rule based joints (gap rules)

 Cans can be inserted on built-up tube members

– Currently not implemented to work on standard members

 Cans are placed by rule using the (American Petroleum Institute) API-
RP2A standard

 Three types
– Inline Can

– StubEnd Can

– End Can

Cans

 When placing a can, it places as a built-up member under the member

system

 Placing a can splits the built-up tube member

 The user can modify the section size of the tube on each side of the
can independently

Place Can Command

 Structure task environment

1. Select member (in-line can) or frame connection on primary member

(end can or stubend can)

2. Select intersecting members

 Select Primary Member Information to

see primary member dimensions

Can Rules

 Can rules are delivered with default catalog

– Based on API-RP2A

 Custom rule allows some manual dimension control by the user

Can Rules

 Height and length of cans are defined by rules according to size and
location of intersecting members in accordance to API standards

 Inline cans automatically resize when end stub end cans are placed
on secondary members

 The can rules account for gaps placed between the secondary
members

– See Gap Frame Connections lecture for more info on gap rules

Can Rules

 Two Can length computation methods Hull method

– Hull
– Centerline

 API rules for each method

– Hull method
 D/4
 305mm (12”) minimum
– Centerline method
Centerline method
 1.25*D
 610mm (24”) minimum

Can Rules

 Length computation methods for cans (dimensions “L2” and “L3”)

– Hull = Measure from outer edge of the secondary members surfaces
along can
– Centerline = Measured from centerlines of secondary members
 Computation method types
– Factor = Outside diameter of can times specified factor
– Length = Specified length

Can Rule Examples
 Inline Can  Stub End Can
– Using the hull method for can length – When overlap condition exists can length is
– Distance is (can diameter)/4 or 305mm (can diameter/4) or 305mm
– When there is no overlap condition can
length is the same as the can diameter or
610mm
