Biome Poster Project

Objective:
To investigate the different characteristics on the biomes found in the world.

Introduction:
Would you expect to see a cactus growing in a northern forest? Or an oak tree growing in a desert?
Absolutely not! But why does a plant grow in one area and not in another? Nonliving, or abiotic factors of the
environment ultimately determine what living things will inhabit a given area. The most common abiotic
factors include soil quality, sunlight, temperature, precipitation, and wind. A large geographical area with a
uniform climate and a dominant form of vegetation is called a biome. The plants that inhabit each biome are
especially adapted to the abiotic factors that influence that area.
Depending on classification methods the
earth has between 6-12 biomes. A biome is a
complex of terrestrial communities The
tundra is a very cold, dry biome that
stretches across the northernmost part of the
continent. South of the tundra is the
coniferous forest, or taiga, a cold, dry
region that extends across Canada and
northern/western regions of the U.S. In
temperate deciduous forests,
temperatures and precipitation are both
moderate. The grassland biomes, have moderate to warm temperatures and precipitation is light. Deserts
tend to be very dry. Central America, as well as the islands in the Caribbean Sea are characterized by the
tropical rain forest biome. Here, warm temperatures are constant and precipitation is abundant.

For this project you will be assigned to a group. Each group will be assigned one of the 10 biomes above : (Use the
textbook pages 111-115 and Internet search)

Each group will create a poster about one of the ten world Biomes.

 Each poster must include the following:

 Temperature range-1 pt
 Average annual Precipitation (Rainfall)-1 pt
 4 Dominant Plants (pictures with names)- 4 pts
 4 Dominant Animals (pictures with names)-4 pts
 Where are they located (Geographic Distribution)? – Include a Map with area shaded AND list location- 3 pts
 3 Unique Characteristics/Facts (about organisms or biome)- 3 pts
 Text must be typed/Name of biome included- 2 pts
 Must include 10 pics (4 plants, 4 animals, map and 1 other picture {soil profile, graph, etc})- 5 pts
 The poster should be visible from the back of the room (2pts)
 Neatness/visual appeal- 5 pts

You will have 2 class periods to research and prepare poster. You will complete a gallery walk to view the
information presented about each biome and complete a table.
