1 -SETUP OF THE MACHINE

I 1.1-GENERAL
It is necessary these instructions are strictly followed for executing correct
cylinder block operations with boring machine BT 6.
Normal working tolerance for the a.m. parts requires boring operations with
high care, which can be executed with necessary precision only when controls,
units and machine accessories are well known.

1.2- UNCRATING THE MACHINE

The machine has been carefully and strongly packed to avoid damages in
transport.
Remove packing with care and do not force against parts of the machine.
Fig. " 1 " shows how to lift the machine with a rope sling to avoid damages.

1.3- LEVELLING THE MACHINE

Machine should be placed on stable foundation to avoid any vibration or

I! deformation causing incorrect finishing; therefore a special concrete pit

should be arranged to ensure a solid floor.
I! Follow this solution also when other near machines with alternate move-
ments may cause floor vibrations.
Level the machine by operating on bolts "1" fig. "2" by using a water level
placed lengthwise and traverse on the main support, then fixing nuts "2 ....

1.4- SETUP OF THE MACHINE

All machine parts liable to rust, have been protected with a layer of oil to
be removed with solvent and finished off with rags which do not leave threads
and fluff.
Take care the bed ways are quite clean as dirt may cause seizures.

1.5- NECESSARY LIGHTING

If possible place the machine in good natural li"ghting.
When working or reading measuring and centering devices it is necessary
to take figures as high as .01 mm ( .001" ) and a good lighting will help
avoiding errors.

1.6- ELECTRICAL CONNECTION TO THE MAINS

Connect the machine to the mains by a thermal cut- out. The machine is
equipped with a quadripole cable to this end.

4- SETUP AND CENTERING OF CYLINDER BLOCKS AND

TOOL MEASURmG DEVICE

4.1- SETUP AND CENTERING OF CYLINDER BLOCK

Obviously, when locking slightly the unit, you will attempt to line first
the hole axis of the camshaft seats as near as possible to the vertical axis
of the side rests at the end of the head.
Lining up will be adjusted as shown in fig. " 13 "by means of the centering

r
device" 156 "equipped with dial gauge" 158 ".
First, radial adjust the tracer point in respect to the diameter of the external
head seats, then insert these devices on to the boring bar and turn by han~
for checking value and direction of centering errors.
Vertical errors should be adjusted by turning the handwheel " 14 .... and
handle " 22 " while handle " 21 " may adjust traverse errors till alignment
1
is obtained when dial gauge reads zero.
At this point, before starting working, setup operation is completed by
locking traverse ( lever " 3 and 13 " fig. " 2 " ) parallel rests (lever "20"
fig. " 4 " ) and working p ieee to the parallel rests " 11 " fig. " 8 ".
Repeat control operation 'to eliminate residual alignment differences.
As described, parallel rests are equipped with vertical and horizontal mi-
crometric adjustment making the centering operation easier.
For taking advantage of this possibility in both senses it is necessary, before
r-
jl
placing head, that slider index is on the centering mark of transparent plate
"97 "fig. "8 ".
Follow the above procedure also for centering and placing dead hole heads IL
but with two variations: bar support will pass from the external to the inner
part of the head fig. " 14 "and the normal centering device will be replaced
with that one" 159 ",supplied on request (see fig." 25 "). l
This particular device can be inserted in a reduced space then admitting the
seat control, not within 360° being impossible when the gauge is placed
inside the head, but in any case within a range assuring the correct head IL
centering.
Normal centering devices are also necessary to align, with the working
axis, "V "cylinder blocks as" in line".
1
The last ones are positioned directly on the parallel rests fig. " 18 ", while
for " V "cylinder blocks the unit shown in fig. " 15 "should be used when
possible.
The a.m. device is quite universal and can be used in many operations being
also suitable for cylinder blocks slanting at 30° and 45°.
Always to make the cylinder blocks alignment ( roughing centering) easier,
L
on request a cone set" 161" fig." 15" is available which is chamfered longi-
tudinally to allow quick positioning and removal in and from the working
area.

After zero setting of the measuring device, it is convenient to carry the
operation out of the working area, by using for example the support " 162 ''
fig." 16 ",available on request, holding the bar.
Following directions are important for correct zero setting of the measuring
device.

I Loose screw " 167 " fig. " 17 ";let the support rod go down, then place
device onto the bar.
Fix the device to the bar by means of the support rod and screws and lock
slightly screw " 166 ".
I
I Zero set dial gauge " 170 ", loose screw " 168 " and make in contact the
tracer point and the bar on the toolholder surface.
Adjust the position of the measuring device until the dial indicator pointer
reads on zero or on the figure taken and lock by screw" 168 ".
Should the dial indicator pointer or the micrometer not exactly coincide
with zero, first set the micrometer on zero and then dial indicator by means
of the knurled screw " 169 "which, being previously set on the front red
dot, will have a fair adjustment range in either direction.
Once the calibration has been set, it is necessary to choose the suitable tool

I
to bore the desired diameter and place it into the boring bar making use of
the hole which is nearest to the first bearing to be bored or in the toolholder
hole.
Place the measuring device, which has been previously set to read the re-

rI
quired measure, on the boring bar so that the boring tool is on the support
center and perfectly in line with the micrometer stem, then lock it.
Let the boring tool advance by means of the adjustment screw " 165 ",
until the stem of the measuring device reads zero and lock by the proper
screw.
Recheck the measure by letting the whole device swivel on the tool tip

4.3- CENTRAL SUPPORT AND BAR DEFLECTION CONTROL UNIT

Central support fig. " 18 " is used to increase stiffness and steadiness of the
boring bar when length of the bar rest, supplied like standard equipment,
does not allow its regular positioning inside the cylinder bock.

BrRc1> I

This unit, supplied on request, can be fixed onto the cylinder block by
means of the stirrups " 176 " or by using the existing holes on the cylinder
block plane. ~·

It consists of a cast iron cross piece, a bar " 180 "with a bearing holding
support " 182 ", a central rest " 177 " and a ring nut for vertical po-
I
sitioning " 179 ".
Central support can be quickly adapted to different types of cylinder blocks
but its location requires attention to avoid possible deflection and de-
I
formation to the boring bar.
To this end a spring is inserted between the central support and ring nut, to
compensate the central bar weighfand the bearing holding support.
To note possible boring bar deviations it is suggested to use the line up
control device shown in fig. "20 ".
Such device, sup pi ied on request, consists of a traverse " 183 ", two dial
gauge holding bars " 184, 185 " and two dial gauges placed at 90° one
from the other.
When set to zero on the bar, dial gauges may signal possible deflections or
deformations to the boring bar owing to uncorrect central support posi-
tioning.

5- WORKING OPERATION

5.1- BORING
Once trued the job, as previously instructed, let the boring bar going through
seats and supports; then connect the same to the driving bar previously
inserted onto the spindle shaft " 7 " fig. " 21 " by means of a thread.
Bar rests should be placed in order to reduce possible bar flections as much
as possible, then locked to the traverse slides by lever " 9 " fig. " 21 ".
Usually, boring operation starts on the left side of the head or motor block
but in particular cases, like for ~ead hole heads or when using the tool-
holder, boring operation may start from right side.
Feed and cutting speed may be choosen by the operator aq:ording to the
material to be worked and seat dimensions.
We recommend two cuts, one roughing cut followed by the relating check
and one finishing cut.
WARNING - It is suggested, at the end of every working operation or during
stop, to place lever " 4 " fig. " 10 " on STOP POSITION, for the correct
running of the oleopneumatic system.

6 ·SHARPENING DEVICE
I
6.1 ·SOLDERED TOOL SHARPENING DEVICE
On request the soldered tool sharpening device fig. " 26 " is supplied.
It consists of a three-phase electric motor " 230 ", on the support " 223 "
I
{

on which shaft the diamond wheel is fixed.

Sharpening jig allows soldered tool sharpening operations according to
definite cutting angles.
I
!
When tool does not cut, the two flanks should be sharpened and slightly
rounded off.
To regrind flank of the tool, place the same into the toolholder hole" 229"
and place it, ·before fixing, with bit in contact with jig arm " 224 " when
the last one is corresponding to the toolholder position.
Toolholder and tool should be fitted on the turning rest" 228" and rounding
radius of the point prearranged, i.e. zero point of the tool holder correspond-
ing to the first sign marked on the support, in case that the desired radius is
one millimeter (0.04") for example.
When the tool is fixed, it is necessary to loose the handle " 225 "and turn
the support " 228 " to become in contact with the gauge placed on the base
" 226 " and then to produce alternatively an oscillating movement up and
down while the tool will be advanced towards the wheel by turning the
knob" 227 ".
Same operation will be repeated for the other tool flank but taking care
to stop feed when the tool nose corresponds to the axis of the same tool.
For cutting edge nose rounding, place first the sharpening device in order to
have the tool nose in the middle of the grinding wheel face, then lock the
base " 226 " by handle " 225 " and advance tool towards the grinding
wheel by means of the knob " 227 "turning continuously the rest "228 ",
from right to leftside, until the desired radius is obtained.
WARN lNG · When presetting the rounding radius of the tool nose, it is
necessary first of all, to consider the material to be bored, i.e.: while for
antifriction metal the tool nose can be also rounded with radius higher
than 1 mm ( 0.04" ). for steel boring radius will not overcome 0,1- 0,2 mm
(0.0039". 0.0078" ).
Tools supplied have been made in order that wheel may be operating only
on hard metal tool bit, when regrinding: quicker regrinding and lower
consumption of the diamond wheel can be obtained.
Pay attention to this particularity, because when plate and stem are on same
level, it will be necessary to restore the relief angle of the tool stem in order
to keep the wheel always efficient.
Diamond surface of the grinding wheel must be kept cleaned with oil,
because a gummed wheel stops cutting and overheating may cause hard
metal tool bit breakage.
To avoid such inconvenient, it is necessary the tool is always kept slightly
pushed and moved against the diamond wheel face.
