" " " care? #Is this about motivation?
Question:" " Let’s talk about the signals and guides. What’s the difference? "
" " "
Question:! ! What are the signals and how do we send them?
Question:! ! You say the 7th step is Rehearsing...is this really necessary? !
! ! ! How do you do it?
What motivates people (including you!) to change their minds, change their behav-
ior, change their lives? The simple answer is fear and desire. Desire pulls us to-
wards what we do want. Fear pushes us away from what we don’t want. Accord-
ing to the Kirschner Model of Motivation, there are six motivations, and each of
them has a fear side and a desire side.
People don’t think logically most the time. When we are busy, overwhelmed, or
afraid, we look and listen for cues about whether or not to be persuaded, and
make decisions based on those signals instead of the facts. We think emotionally.
One of the best ways to persuade others is with your ears, by listening. Listening
allows you to gain access to the deeper structure behind the surface words and
ideas. Listening allows you to build trust, to signal understanding, and to FIND
THE MAP! The MAP consists of Motivations, access, and positions. Learn to
quickly understand a person's true interests and needs and then shape your ideas
to speak to those interests and meet those needs.
There are many ways to deal with questions, criticism, objections and respond to
outright opposition. In a group situation, one of the simplest is to repeat the
question, then reframe it, and answer the question you want to answer.
You can be calm, confident and relaxed when speaking up and speaking out to
others. You can do this with your breath, your hands, your feet, and the words you
say to yourself. Anyone can learn to change their state and be present when
speaking to persuade.
Dealing with groups persuasively is best accomplished when there are some
ground rules in place about how people are to conduct themselves while in the
group. The result is less difficulty, more cooperation, and most importantly, the
process of working together leads to positive and worthwhile outcomes instead
of anger and frustration.
