THE COLLEGE COAT OF ARMS

The Crescent and the star remind us of the eternal law of

submission to the will of God, governing the universe. The sea stands
for the vast treasure house of opportunities ever open to the seekers.
The coconut palms constitute the economic basis of the region. The
open book and the lighted candle symbolize the mental and moral
enlightenment.

The College colours are Yellow, Green and white symbolizing

auspiciousness, prosperity and purity respectively.

Meaning of the holy inscription on the emblem

We invoke the blessings of God on us. The light which will be

granted to us should be made whole and perfect. This light will see us
through the encircling darkness in the Hereafter until we reach the
eternal abode of Peace and Bliss.

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2017 - ‘18

In the name of Allah the most beneficent and the most merciful
Respected Secretary of M.K.N. Madharasa Trust and son of our founder,
revered chief-guests, esteemed members of the management, learned colleagues,
dedicated administrative staff, dear students, media and press persons, ladies and
gentlemen, I take great pleasure in extending a warm welcome to all of you to this
63rd College Day function and wish to present the annual report of our college,
documenting its developments and achievements during the academic year 2017-
’18.
Homage to Founders
The great altruist Janab Khadir Mohideen Maraicar and his remarkably
benevolent brothers Janab M.K.N.Naina Mohammed Labbai Maraicar, Janab
Ahamed Thambi Maraicar, and Haji. Janab Sheik Salath Maraicar devoted their
heart and soul to the service of Muslim minority community and contributed their
huge wealth to establish the M.K.N. Madharasa Trust and Salahiya Arabic
College. This is the right time to remember them with a deep sense of indebtedness
and to pay tribute to them.
Disseminating Islamic principles and practices was the main objective of the
trust when it was established in 1901. The munificent grandson of the donors, late
Haji. S.M.S. Shaik Jalaludeen extended the benefits of the trust to all sections of
people. He started many educational institutions such as Khadir Mohideen Boys’
Higher Secondary School, Khadir Mohideen Girls’ Higher Secondary School and
Khadir Mohideen College to impart modern education
May the Almighty Allah shower His choicest blessings upon all the donors
and the founder and may all these institutions flourish and cater to the needs of the
people in the years to come!
Profile of the College
Education is the basis for any society. The man with a mission late Haji.
S.M.S.Shaik Jalaludeen has monumentalized himself with his due endowment to
the cause of education by founding Khadir Mohideen College in a vast area as a
religious minority institution with the principal objective of providing higher
education to the suppressed and socially backward sections of the society in general
and Muslim minority in particular.
.

Khadir Mohideen College was founded in 1955, affiliated to the University

of Madras and then became an affiliated college to the Bharathidasan University,
Tiruchirappalli, when the university was formed in 1982. The college was
reaccredited with ‘B’ grade by NAAC in 2011. This great sanctuary of higher
learning has produced a number of academicians, scientists, administrators,
intellectuals, politicians, IT professionals, police officials, dedicated teachers and
reputed citizens of India.
Our college has been ranked as 118 among 1087 participating institutions by
the National Institutional Ranking Framework, an autonomous body of the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Now, our
college is getting ready for the third cycle of NAAC. All the teaching and non-
teaching staff are working vigorously for reaccreditation and we are hopeful of
getting an ‘A’ grade this time.

Admission & Strength

The primary aim of our college is to impart quality education to the under-
privileged sections of the society of this region. So, a large number of backward
caste, scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students were admitted to our college in
all the academic programmes. The total number of students in this academic year
is 2778.

endeavors, and have an ambition to achieve desired goals, even after facing
obstacles in life.
Ambition is really a very good sign of success, because it works as an
inner driving force to make life meaningful, useful and of course, successful.
On the other hand, there are people who want to make these dream come
ture, but without making sincere efforts for completion of the tasks. They
fear obstacles and leave the taste rather they just plan and speak of them
without any execution.
People are classified into three categories based on their nature. It is
well stated that-
People with less intellect never begin a work because they fear
failture; people with average intellect begin to work, but give up in the
middle, frustrated by obstructions; but people with the right intellect(with
determination) never give up the task, in spite of failures, till they reach the
goal.”
People who really want their dreams to come ture are of a third
category. They are endowed not only with determination but also with
certain qualities that help them become successful in life. Let us discuss a
few qualities, which define a successful person.
Confidence contributes to success, Confidence is a self-developed
quality. It has to be cultivated with sincere effort and diligence. A person who
has self- confidence converts challenges into opportunities. If you have self-
confidence you not only achieve your goals, but you can also do wonders.
Self-confidence keeps a person motivated and encouraged. Defeat and
failures come, but you need to keep your confidence up, and you can turn
these obstacles into stepping – stones to success. You have to realize the
potential strength hidden in you. You need to be fully aware of your power
and capabilities and must march ahead till you achieve your desired goal.
You, with self – confidence need to love each and every task and feel joy while
performing it, and this results in trusting yourself. This trust or faith within
yourself makes you more capable, intellectual, skilful, realistic, perfect and
of course, successful.
How will you cultivate the self- confidence? The answer is simple.
You must have a firm conviction of your ability. You need not doubt
your capacity to perform well. Accept the challenges and responsibilities;
never underestimate yourself. You need to always have a positive attitude.
Dreams can never become a reality without hard work. Nothing great
can come unless you work for it. When you put your constant efforts, success
is bound to come. You should never withdraw from working hard. It is well
said, “Fortune approaches one who is industrious”.
In order to transform your dream into reality you must have a strong
will power. It is true that mind is fickle and restless by nature, but you need
to learn to master your mind, don’t become a slave of it. You must possess a
strong will and determination to achieve great things. You need to make your
mind work for you. Train your mind to be strong enough. Once you realize
your strong mental state, it turns in to will power.
Strong will power gets transformed into commitment when it is put
into practice. Commitment to a cause keeps your faith, and confidence high.
Concentration on the task results in perfection, perfection into success, and
finally success leads to happiness.

You must develop an ability to discriminate between right and wrong

and between vice and virtue. This discriminating power keeps you always
on the right track to move toward your journey of success. When you are
moving toward your success, you must be careful about your ego, and over-
confidence. This may, sometimes, set you back. Therefore, accept challenges,
and put your honest efforts to transform dreams into reality.

MULTI CULTURALISM-A CULTURAL KALEDOSCOPE
M.A.THASLEEMA
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
PG AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

Multiculturalism is a self-defining term from which one can infer the meaning without much
effort. This word is not a new one to the people of India, since Indians are living in a multi
lingual, multi racial and multi ethnic society which leads to the multicultural society.
Multiculturalism is the practice of giving equal attention to many different backgrounds in a
particular setting.

Webster’s New World Dictionary defines Multiculturalism as the policy or

practice of giving equal attention or representation to the cultural needs and
contributions of all the groups under represented in the past as through bilingual
education. Cultural Pluralism is another term synonymously used and it
emphasises the unique characteristics of different cultures in the world especially
as they relate to one another in immigrant receiving nations. The word was first
used in 1957 to describe Switzerland but first came into common currency in
Canada in the late 1960s. It quickly spread to other English speaking countries.
Multiculturalism has become seminal when the post colonial metropolis London
started receiving the immigrants from the colonised countries. London has
become the meeting point for different cultures, religions and races. It provides
opportunities for the expatriates.

A multi cultural society consists of two or more different cultures which are
different in language, religion, tradition and their system of values. London
became multi cultural mainly by immigrants who left their countries mostly for
political, demographical or economical reasons in the search for freedom and a
better standard of living. Some so-called push-factors are political suppression,
bad working conditions or natural disasters. Pull-factors are religious and political
freedom and better jobs and chances to earn some money.
Britain itself encouraged people from over-populated countries or under-
employed Commonwealth countries to immigrate because it needed cheap
workers to fill the semi-skilled and non-skilled vacancies and to rebuild the war-
shattered economy.
As literature is the mirror of life various literary works of art reflect the social
life of people. It is evident and can be found in the fictions in which the characters
represent real human beings and their sufferings. The concept of multiculturalism
is also reflected in the fictions. The recent writings of the contemporary writers
portray the complexities of the people who live in the multi cultural society. One
such writer is Zadie Smith. Havinga Jamaican mother and an English father, she
just wanted to write a funny book in which not everybody is white, she didn’t
think much about multiculturalism in London because it is nothing to talk about,
it is normal. Her debut novel WHITE TEETH made her famous when she was just
doing her under-graduation. She received a five figured advance money for her
yet-to-finish novel. However, the book became one of the best novels dealing
with multiculturalism.
The plot evolves the three families of different ethnic origins living in
Northwestern London. In contrast to other initial works of contemporary Black
British writers, her first novel is not the usual account of the Black youth
experience in Britain written from an autobiographical perspective. On more than
five hundred pages, the Anglo-Jamaican author explores a wide range of themes
such as Second World War experiences, first generation migrant life , recent
British youth culture, inter generational family conflicts, radical religious
fanaticism and biogenetical engineering . Despite its numerous discourses,
diverse characters and multiple time layers, all of the novel’s addressed issues
center around the problem of the individual person performing an authentic
identity in a multi cultural society and the establishment of a new national identity
in post colonial Britain. Zadie Smith explores the characters’ identity conflicts
before the background of their family history. However , while genetic
inheritance, cultural origins and prehistory seem to play an important role in the
individual’s development, chance and personal choice are decisive factors which
have the potential to overrule any apparently predetermined life path. History and
fate are constantly intermingled throughout the narrative, which is at the same
time a migrant novel, Bildungsroman and family saga.
The purpose of reading and analysing the novels help in a vast way to
understand how people live and what are their problems and how to help them
overcome the challenges. This helps the policy makers to perceive the lifestyle of
the people who live in the multi cultural society and draft laws to promise them a
peaceful and satisfied life.

QUANTUM COMPUTING

A. Haja Abdul Khader

Assistant Professor
Dept. of Computer Science
Quantum computing is the area of study focused on developing computer
technology based on the principles of quantum theory, which explains the nature and
behavior of energy and matter on the quantum (atomic and subatomic) level.
Development of a quantum computer, if practical, would mark a leap forward in
computing capability far greater than that from the abacus to a modern
day supercomputer, with performance gains in the billion-fold realm and beyond. The
quantum computer, following the laws of quantum physics, would gain enormous
processing power through the ability to be in multiple states, and to perform tasks using
all possible permutations simultaneously. Current centers of research in quantum
computing include MIT, IBM, Oxford University, and the Los Alamos National
Laboratory.

The essential elements of quantum computing originated with Paul Benioff,

working at Argonne National Labs, in 1981. He theorized a classical computer operating
with some quantum mechanical principles. But it is generally accepted that David
Deutsch of Oxford University provided the critical impetus for quantum computing
research. In 1984, he was at a computation theory conference and began to wonder
about the possibility of designing a computer that was based exclusively on quantum
rules, then published his breakthrough paper a few months later. With this, the race
began to exploit his ideas. However, before we delve into what he started, it is
beneficial to have a look at the background of the quantum world.

Quantum Theory

Quantum theory's development began in 1900 with a presentation by Max

Planck to the German Physical Society, in which he introduced the idea that energy
exists in individual units (which he called "quanta"), as does matter. Further
developments by a number of scientists over the following thirty years led to the
modern understanding of quantum theory.

The Essential Elements of Quantum Theory:

• Energy, like matter, consists of discrete units, rather than solely as a continuous
wave.

• Elementary particles of both energy and matter, depending on the conditions, may
behave like either particles or waves.

• The movement of elementary particles is inherently random, and, thus,

unpredictable.

• The simultaneous measurement of two complementary values, such as the position

and momentum of an elementary particle, is inescapably flawed; the more
precisely one value is measured, the more flawed will be the measurement of the
other value.

Quantum Programming

Perhaps even more intriguing than the sheer power of quantum computing is
the ability that it offers to write programs in a completely new way. For example, a
quantum computer could incorporate a programming sequence that would be along
the lines of "take all the superpositions of all the prior computations" - something which
is meaningless with a classical computer - which would permit extremely fast ways of
solving certain mathematical problems, such as factorization of large numbers.
There have been two notable successes thus far with quantum programming.
The first occurred in 1994 by Peter Shor, who developed a quantum algorithm that
could efficiently factorize large numbers. It centers on a system that uses number
theory to estimate the periodicity of a large number sequence. The other major
breakthrough happened with Lov Grover of Bell Labs in 1996, with a very fast algorithm
that is proven to be the fastest possible for searching through unstructured databases.
The algorithm is so efficient that it requires only, on average, roughly N square root
(where N is the total number of elements) searches to find the desired result, as
opposed to a search in classical computing, which on average needs N/2 searches.

The Palace of Knowledge
Prof. E.Philomena
Dept. of English

Stepping in there as Learners

Not only to study
But also to learn
With heavy breath of Satisfaction
Loads of dreamz
& bashing thoughts:
“The initial steps of progressive career
On fire to achieve
& enthusiasm to learn”
Enters the class, noticing that
all birds have no wings
joined there as am one of them
The books notes & materials
Playing with & feeling Roller Coaster sometimes
Scooping stuff up & Struggling as well
And Now, Yes, the Flocks got wings

Stepping in there as Educators

Not only to learn
But make them learn
With heavy breath of Determination
Responsible for dreamz
& bashing thoughts :
“Aims & future of many
is now on my hands
Make sure the best to fulfil”
Cordial as mom & Strict as dad
The thirst on teaching
Forwarding to enlighten
Horning their Skills
& thus Shaping the world
The deserved designation I hold
Yes, guiding the Flocks to get wings
Lovely experience of infinite Learning
In one building, the College
Yes, the Palace of Knowledge
Not just the money & manual efforts
Not just the pillars & blocks
But built by dreamz & Goals
The Gateway of Future!
