From the Vicarage Sacred Space
Church buildings stand for a perspective on life lived not simply for the day
but in the life of eternity.
There is a need, in our busy world, for places where people can step aside
and be quiet before God. There is a need deep in the human psyche for
sacred space, holy space, space set apart (the root meaning of holy),
space marked off from ordinary use, for the celebration of those rites which
mark off the community’s sense of the critical moments in life. Space
where the invisible is manifested through the visible.

Christianity is an incarnational religion - we believe that God embraced

human form. He did not despise the value of the human body and human
needs. And humans live by their senses - and so for our worship we need
sensual stimuli, candles, music, light, colour, movement. And we need
suitable places for this - and this means buildings.

And it is clearly important that there be in the world signs of the

transcendent - reminders of God and his values. This ‘space’ may not be
‘in use’ all the time but it is there for silence, for reflection, for gaining
perspective. A space where ‘prayer has been valid’. A place where there is
a table for bread and wine to be shared, the holiness of shared life, space
for people to meet. Space for the story of God and his dealings with
humanity to be told and reflected on, the holiness of facing up to the reality
of love, life, death and resurrection which lies at the heart of the Christian
story.
At the heart of it is a man tortured to death in public and an end, beyond
that, which caused the original disciples to flee in amazement and not a
little terror. The empty tomb is, of course, a place of pure potency. The
disciples go into the tomb and are turned round there and sent out,
precipitated into the world space of Galilee, to share the life-changing and
life-enriching story and experience of Jesus Christ. As Christians today that
is also our calling, to be fed in worship and fellowship and then sent out to
serve and share and offer.

To a certain extent we become what we value, and a sign of what we really

value is often the time we give to it. As well as a need for sacred physical
space, there is also a need in many of our lives to create sacred, holy
space. Space set apart for contemplation, for communication with God.
A need for sacred space in the middle of the community, and a need for
sacred space in the midst of our often frenetic and stressed lives.
David Cleeves

Bible Reading Notes Rudyard Kipling wrote “I keep six honest serving-
men, / (They taught me all I knew); / Their names are What and Why and
When / And How and Where and Who.” Those question words can serve
Christians. Bible reading notes can help us apply these questions to the
Scriptures and understand the context in which they were first written and
how they apply to us today. A variety of publications are available: ‘New
Daylight’, the most popular, has the Bible passage printed out and a short
4
commentary, ‘Guidelines’ provides a slightly more academic approach, ‘Day
by Day with God’ is produced with women in mind and ‘Bible Reflections for
Older People’ is designed to bring hope, assurance and sustenance and is
written by older authors for this specific age group. All the publications are
£4.50 for a four month set of notes except for ‘Bible Reflections for Older
People’ which is £4.99. Trying out one issue doesn’t commit you to keep
on purchasing. I would be pleased to talk to people and answer any
questions and to take orders from new readers For further details please

on the day! We have plenty of wool, needles and patterns to get you
started. The knitted poppies are now being attached to backing fabric to
adorn the churches for Remembrance Sunday.

Hope Community Garden - We are looking for MORE VOLUNTEERS to
join the regular work party on the first Saturday of every month, maintaining
and developing the garden. If you enjoy gardening, this could be right up
your street. Not only is it an enjoyable way to spend an hour or two – we’re
a friendly bunch – but it is a really worthwhile thing to do, keeping this
excellent community facility up to scratch.
Have you thought of taking on one of the small plots? They are a gentle
way of keeping your hand in if you are no longer able to manage a full size
allotment, or if you don’t have much of a garden at home and would like to
grow a few veg, or if you would like to try and involve your children in
something really productive.
If you have poor mobility or are a wheelchair user, we also have a raised
bed which you could either take on completely, or just help with its
maintenance. There is a parking space available, and wheelchair or
scooter access from the path. If you want to know more, Jim Hunter is
the man to talk to – he can be contacted at the number below.
The HOPE Community Garden is joint enterprise of Masham Allotment
Association and HOPE Community Support. If you would like to be part of

WEDNESDAY WELCOME CENTRE

Open every Wednesday, 12.30-3.30pm
at Masham Methodist Church
The Wednesday Welcome Centre continues to live up to its name at the
Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a passing visitor
on holiday in Masham, or you just want to pop in for half an hour for a quick
cup of tea and a chat, or you want to go the whole hog – join us from
12.30pm for a bowl of soup and cake and stay on to take part in the
activities through to 3.30pm. People always comment on the friendliness of
the group and how much laughter there is – and we all know that laughter
is the best medicine! Most weeks, our resident pianist, Brenda Loveday,
keeps us entertained with old favourites and sometimes this develops into a
full scale singalong!
We love a celebration, and in August celebrated Yorkshire Day with white
rose bunting, a Wilfra Cake with our lunch, and a “name the sweets”

9
competition with a range of old-fashioned confectionary provided by
Joneva.
We are open to everyone, but offer additional information and support for
people living with dementia through our contacts with Dementia Support,
Carers Resource, Red Cross and others. Do feel free to pop in and find out
what we get up to.
If you would like more information about the centre, or would like to
volunteer, please contact Joy Rayden on (01765) 689310.

NEW CARERS GROUP

Do you care for someone who needs day-to-day support with their physical
or emotional needs? Maybe your wife or husband? Maybe a sibling or
friend? Or maybe a child with extra support needs? Whatever your
particular situation, being the main carer for someone who is highly
dependant can be lonely and exhausting, and it is often difficult to know
where to turn for help with your own emotional and practical support needs
In June we started a new Carers Group, within the Wednesday Welcome
Centre at the Methodist Church, but run by Carers Resource. It will be
meeting every third Wednesday of the month, from 2.00-3.00pm, at the
front of the church and the next meeting is on 19th September.
Carers Resource long ago recognised the essential work done by carers,
and all the implications regarding their own needs. They are able to offer
emotional support, information about resources available, and, where
necessary, put you in touch with other agencies who may be able to offer
more specialised support. One of the most valuable aspects of the group is
meeting up with other carers, sharing experiences, and perhaps finding an
understanding which is difficult to find elsewhere.
Please feel free just to turn up, and if you would like to know more,
please phone Isobel Holmes, who will be leading the group, at Carers
Resource on 01423 500555, or call in at the Wednesday Welcome
Centre and ask for Joy.

Masham Liftshare: We all readily offer lifts and share car journeys with our
friends and family, but many of us travel with an empty passenger seat
simply because we don’t know of anyone who needs a lift, while others
struggle to make appointments because they’ve got no wheels. Around
Masham, there is now a way the passenger-less and the lift-less can meet!
Save money by sharing travel costs; cut congestion, pollution and help look
after our environment; reduce the stress of driving by sharing your journey
with great people. You can choose to car share as little or as often as you
like, it doesn’t have to be on a regular basis. All you have to do is register
your journey as either a driver or a passenger
on www.masham.liftshare.com and then activate your account. Joining the
scheme is simple and completely free and your email address is kept
14
hidden. If you have any questions and want to find out more about this
exciting community transport initiative or need help accessing the website,
please pop into Mashamshire Community Office, call 01765 680200 or
email: liftshare@visitmasham.com.
Masham.liftshare.com is a transport lift scheme to benefit all local
communities.

Masham Christmas Lights Appeal

Your help is needed! We have to raise circa £3,000 each year to maintain,
repair and replace and improve Masham's lights displays. If you enjoyed
the Xmas lights last year, you are in for a treat again this year as we
continue to develop more. But your support is needed to continue to
make Masham market place and streets look fantastic throughout the
festive period.
Have you got any unwanted presents lurking unloved in a cupboard? Do
you want to donate them to a good cause, our Lights Appeal tombola, and
free up some space? If so, please drop them off with Mark at Joneva in the
Market Place. We also need clean, quality bric-a-brac for our stalls on the
Sheep Fair 29th September and Town Hall fundraiser 20th of October. If
you have a little spare time to help us on these days or in maintaining our
light displays call Peter on 07831 840 330.

16
Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated. Donate? Go to
www.goldengiving.com and just type in 'Masham' in the search bar. Thank
you for your support!

Snape Open Gardens

It was a memorable and very happy summer weekend - lots of sunshine,
20 lovely gardens on display, excellent lunches and refreshments, many
visitors (some from a distance) and generous raffle prizes; plus lots of
hard work by local church and chapel folk and other villagers, giving time
as well as cakes and plants. Special thanks to the indefatigable
organisers Janet Seel and Alison and John Knopp for the planning and
constant work over this busy weekend. A good financial result to help
our Anglican Churches in Snape and Well was the icing on the cake.
Thank you again. David and Elizabeth Lickess

Snape Playing Field regeneration – update

Two events, organised by the Playing Field Committee and held over the
summer have raised over £900 towards the final stage in the planned
improvements to the field. A table top sale held on 2 June raised £363.
A superb afternoon and evening on Saturday 14 July meant a further £564
was raised at the Party on the Green. This event was also a celebration of
the developments which have already occurred – the changes to the field
surface and the installation of 4 new pieces of equipment.
The Playing Field Committee would like to thank anyone who attended and
supported these hugely successful events.

19
The Committee has still to raise around £3.5k to be able to install an aerial
runway, the final stage in the changes planned for the field. Further events
will be planned for the coming months; please support the final push to
raise the remaining funding required. If you wish to organise an event or
raise funds to support the Committee with the fund raising please contact
Sarah Lowe, Clerk (tel 01677 470444).
