Background:
Albemarle Tech is a new ACPS high school experience designed to offer students an alternative style of
learning in a place where they are supported and where they can succeed. Designed using the best
contemporary research on education, Albemarle Tech will remove several potential barriers to learning:
such as time constraints, environmental limitations, and curricular restrictions. In addition, with a
location embedded in the Albemarle County world of innovative businesses, Albemarle Tech will allow
students to fully engage their world. Removing these barriers allows students to discover an extensive
education made possible by a grassroots connection to the community through technological problem-
solving and maker-infused learning.

2018 – 2019 Course Standards:

The course standards at Albemarle Tech vary from student to student and are dependent upon
graduation requirements. However, the majority of students enrolled at Albemarle Tech during the
2018 – 2018 school year will earn an English 12 credit. The VDOE course standards for this class can be
found at the following link:
http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/english/2010/stds_english12.pdf

Hours of Operation:
Albemarle Tech will open Monday – Friday at 8:30 a.m. Students who arrive prior to the learning centers
opening may work in the hallway or in the exterior seating options. Students will not be permitted to
enter the space before 8:30. Students must exit the learning center upon closing each day at 3:30 pm.

Technology Policy: While utilizing Albemarle County Public School technology resources all students are
held to the Acceptable Use of Technology Policy (IIBE). The full policy can be found at the following link:
http://www2.k12albemarle.org/dept/dart/edtech/Documents/Acceptable%20use%20of%20technology.pdf

Honor Policy: Students will abide by the honor policy set forth by county policy. All honor related
incidents will be brought to the attention of school administration and could result in disciplinary action,
loss of credit for the assignment, and/or removal from the program.
Attendance: All students are expected to be on time and present at Albemarle Tech as noted in their
schedule. Scheduling varies from student to student, and is determined by the master schedule of each
students base school. At the start of the school year, all attendance needs and communications should
be handled by contacting David Glover. At some point, Albemarle Tech will be staffed by an OA who will
handle this role. It will be communicated to parents and students when this change is made.

Course Design and Portfolio:

Throughout the school year, students will build a comprehensive portfolio that showcases their work,
set learning goals, and interact with the curriculum standards using a platform called “Lift.” Similar to
Blackboard, this system will allow students to plan, design, and engage with their projects virtually, at
any time, all year long.

Grading: Project grades will be posted in PowerSchool and available on the Parent or Student Portal site.
If there are questions about what you see within PowerSchool, please contact the instructor with
specific questions about the feedback received on an assignment.

Non-Discrimination Statement: Albemarle County Public Schools does not discriminate on the basis of
sex, gender, race, color, national origin, disability, religion, ancestry, age, marital status, genetic
information, sexual orientation or any other characteristic protected by law in its programs and
activities, and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups.
