 One of the goals of the Department of Education was for the teachers to
be properly equipped and guided, so they initiated School Learning Action Cell
or known as SLAC session. It is a session revisiting and reviewing some
concerns in performing the duties and responsibilities of an effective teacher
to be able to achieve quality education.

With regards to this, English, Filipino and the TLE Department of

Pagsanjan Integrated National High School pushed through this kind of training
which was conducted last August 17, 2018. The said session was attended by
all the head teachers and teachers from different departments.

The session started with a nationalistic song followed by an opening

prayer led by Mr. Leomar G. Mercado. Then a welcoming remark from Dr.
Jeannette D. De Leon was done to set the mood and to create an energetic
atmosphere throughout the training. She even thanked all the speakers for
their will to spent time and their aim to share knowledge with everybody.

Different resource speakers from Pedro Guevara Memorial National

High School were invited to impart their expertise which they mastered. The
speakers were introduced by each Department Head. Mrs. Alma B. Ramirez,
the Head Teacher of English Department introduced the first speaker Dr.
Merlen B. Sancha who strongly believed that values were more important than
competencies. She discussed about “Instructional Materials for Intervention
Activities”. She even insisted that teachers were the most important
instructional materials.

Instructional materials can be classified into different kinds. Graphics,

replica of real thing, still pictures, still projected pictures and audio visual
materials.

These interventions were targeted to be used by the teachers so as

remediation for slow learners and enhancement for extreme students. It was
also identified that classification of instructional materials according to the
competencies must be considered for the achievements of the students.

After Mrs. Sancha’s talk an energizer was done, then the second
speaker, Mrs. Lorilie C. Miñon, was introduced by Mrs. Flora C. Abad, Filipino
Head Teacher. She discussed the “Techniques and Strategies in Selecting
Activities for Varied Types of Learners”. She gave emphasis on the teaching
techniques that a teacher can use to meet the needs of the students. She
stated that a good teaching technique was not about how a teacher facilitated
the lesson best but how he/she used a specific teaching pedagogy in
transferring the knowledge to the students.

The techniques that should be used by the teachers should bring out
the best in the students not only the best in the teacher. Consideration of the
different or diverse learners must also be focused. Howard Gardner’s theory of
multiple intelligences inculcated the diversity of students that there were in a
classroom. Mrs. Lorilie C. Miñon gave task to the teachers. The faculty was
grouped in accordance to the different multiple intelligences. They acted a role
play, sang a song, and performed a bodily kinesthetic dance interpretation.

To end her discussion, the speaker even stated that what was fair,
wasn’t always equal and differentiation got us away from “one’s size fitted all”
approach to curriculum and instruction that don’t fit anyone.

The TLE Department Head, Mr. Ferdinand R. Paras, introduced the last
among the three speakers for this SLAC session. She was Mrs. Corazon R.
Compuesto who inspired everybody to always plant to be able to live.

The talk was all about preparation of intervention materials,

contextualization and indigenization and localization of instructional materials.
She demonstrated her expertise in the livelihood and agriculture. The
advantages of edible landscaping over conventional landscaping were also
given prominence to be applied by the teachers.

Organic farming was also deliberated, its uses and benefits. Teachers
can scrutinize this method in school’s vegetable garden just like what Labuin
Elementary School had in Pila, Laguna which was recognized internationally.
From this type of farming, school will harvest quality foods and vegetables
because it used natural fertilizers.

Different kinds of natural fertilizers such as FFJ (Fermented Fruit

Juice), FAA (Fish Amino Acid), CaPhos (Calcium Phosphate), FPJ (Fermented
Plant Juice) and OHN (Oriental Herbal Nutrients) were also imparted and
demonstrated by the speaker for the teachers to have an on-hand experience
in making it.

Certificate of Appreciation were given to the resource speakers by

Mrs. Alma B. Ramirez, Mrs. Flora C. Abad and Mr. Ferdinand Paras, Head
Teachers in English, Filipino and TLE respectively. Dr. Jeannette De Leon also
joined the awarding of the certificates.

Mrs. Edith A Bandillo also gave a short reflection about the topics of
the three speakers. She reviewed the essence of all the learnings everybody
had gained today.

The master of the program, Mrs. Donabel C. Pasahol, ended the

session with grace implicating how the teachers were grateful to be shared
with new information from these professionals who outrageously and willingly
imparted every piece of thought to the faculty of Pagsanjan Integrated
National High School.
