Objectives of the project:

This project aims at developing a highly cost effective domestic plastic granulating
machine which can be customized to each of the household or to certain residential area and
enable recycling of domestic plastic waste.

Since there exists no any domestic plastic granulating machine, this machine would
open a new door step towards solid plastic waste management. The machine enables the
processing of plastic waste at the point of generation and there by eliminates the Pollution
caused by the careless disposal of the same. It also ensures that all the possible waste
generated is recycled. Since all the activities of granulation are incorporated in a single unit,
it makes this machine more compact and easy to handle.

Methodology:
Presently all the process required for plastic granulation is performed in separate machines.ie
the Crushing ,Extrusion and granule cutting are done in the Crusher ,Extruder ,Granule
cutting unit respectively which are Physically separated. The operation of these machines
needs better skills and more space. The domestic plastic Waste Granulator aims at combining
all the activities of granulation in single unit.

INVOVLVES FOLLOWING PROCESSING OPERATIONS

 SEGREGATION

 WASHING OR CLEANING PROCESS

 CRUSHING PROCESS

 EXTRUSION

 GRANULE CUTTING

 SEGREGATION

Segregation is a manually performed operation. Initially the Non degradable Plastic waste
materials need to be separated from the domestic waste. Different methodologies are
employed for this segregation. One of the methods in practice is, dumping the waste in 2
separate buckets green and yellow in color. The green bucket carries degradable waste and
the yellow carries non degradable waste. The yellow buckets moves towards recycling,
where in the separation of the plastics, metals and other materials takes place. The plastics
separated from the yellow bucket must further undergo classification on basis of their type of
materials. This segregated plastic moves for cleaning

 WASHING OR CLEANING PROCESS:

Washing is the process of removing particulate matters, oil content and food particles from
the segregated plastic waste .The operation is performed in Rotating washing drum. Water
with suitable additives added serves as the cleaning agent. Drying of the cleaned plastic
waste is required, before it is transferred for further processing. The process of Segregation
and cleaning are performed separately in different machines and operated manually.

 CRUSHING PROCESS

Crushing is the process of breaking down the plastic waste into smaller size approximately
l0*10. The size can be varied depending upon the blade placement with in the crusher. The
plastic wastes after segregation fed into the crusher through a Hooper undergo crushing
between the stator and rotar. The rotor is driven by a l/2 hp electric motor. The crushed
particles there after moves into the Extruder.

2
 EXTRUSION

Extruder is the prime part of the machine where in the crushed particles gets drawn into wires
through a die. Screw is the heart of the extruder, which employs heating element through its
length .The heat for melting the Crushed plastics is controlled using a heating control unit.
The Screw, which is motor driven conveys the molten Plastic to the opening of the die. The
die produces wires of required thickness which are drawn by the
take off Wheels through the cooling channel towards the Granule cutting unit.

 GRANULECUTTING

The drawn wires are cut into granules of required size in the granule cutting unit. A rotating
blade performs the act of cutting the wires. The size of the cut granules can be varied by
changing the speed of rotation of the blade. An l/2 hp motor along with gearing attachments
is used for the purpose of blade rotation.

Expected Outcome of the Project:

 Generation of granules from domestic plastic waste.

 Recycle all the possible domestic plastic waste at the point of generation.

 Generate wealth by granules produced from domestic plastic waste.

Application of the Project:

 Helps in generation of wealth from waste

 Plastic coating can be achieved by the use of granulated plastic for variety of products

 Variety of plastic products, such as dampers, cans, tins etc can be produced
from recycled plastic.

 Enables scientific method of plastic waste management and prevents soil, water and air
pollution.

 Granulated plastic can be easily collected, stored and carried a\vary for further
Processing.

Results and Conclusions:
Results:

The machine generates granules from plastic waste and there by enables the scientific plastic
waste management. The domestic plastic waste which is fed into the machine after
segregation and cleaning is converted into granules. These are economically valuable
resources which are high in demand. The machine is capable of processing 5.2 kg of plastic
in an hour and produces an output of 4.8 kg of granules from the same. This production rate
may vary depending upon the type of plastic used for recycling.

Conclusion:
This machine is designed and fabricated, to develop a new window towards the scientific
management of the domestic plastic waste. The innovative machine is cost effective to
produce high output of plastic granules. Also the cost of the machine can be considerably
reduced, when produced commercially. This will make the machine viable for a common
man and thus enabling the process of zero waste generation.
