ILT 3400 OERs and technology

Activity 3: Content Repurposing. Issues surrounding OER:

Technologies and Tools for OER design and
dissemination - WEBQUESTS

Intro:

This activity continues from the previous mindmapping activity and you will remain
in your respective teams. No need for a team-leader this time.

In this activity you will be divided into teams to each consider a particular aspect of
Open educational Resources. Each team will be creating a Webquest pertaining to
Open Educational Resources and this webquest will be evaluated by their peers.

Objectives
At the end of this activity, you should:

• be able to state your own motivation for producing Open Educational

Resources (OERs);
• have investigated and analysed some of the research into online
learning and webquests;
• have evaluated some examples of educational resources for active
open learning;
• be able to plan a structured learning experience using a range of open
educational resources and tools
• be able to construct a webquest by remixing resources using
QuestGarden, Zunal, TeacherWeb etc..
• have considered how to evaluate your teaching resource.

Step 1: (30th Sep -3rd October)

On the discussion forum: Why should I create an OER? You will each post a
statement to reply to this question stating your motivations for creating an OER or
not. You may be agreeable to the OER philosophy or not…It’s for you to voice out
your opinion and discover what each of you have to say about OERs. You will then
rate each of their comments using the rating provided: Individual posts can be
rated using a scale based on the theory of separate and connected knowing.

This theory may help you to look at human interactions in a new way. It describes
two different ways that we can evaluate and learn about the things we see and
hear. You should read about it before rating your friends’ posts here:

Step 2: (4th Oct- 11th Oct)

In your teams, find 2 examples of OER modules and build an evaluation

chart/table to help you evaluate the two OERs that you have found- Try to locate
the two OERs from different sources, MIT, OCW, CNX etc..not from a single site since
they most probably would follow a particular template.- Post your evaluation chart
along with the ratings for the two courses/ modules/content found.(Do make an
emphasis on Active learning) in the submission box OER evaluations.

Step 3: (11th Oct – 30th Oct)

In your teams as below, you have been provided with a particular topic relating
to the OER movement.

Find additional resources and create one single webquest that would teach about
your topics. You may use your mindmap that you had created (maybe more
streamlined and easier to read) to demonstrate the main topics of your webquest
and insert it as an image on your webpage. Read about how to create webquests
and see movies that will inspire you to create your webquest. Discussions about
how you will proceed are to be posted in the forum – Webquests.

(Please note that we shall be having a series of webinars on OERS that you will be
requested to follow as from the 18th to 22nd October which will form the basis of the
next activity 4- I will be sending you the link so that you can register on these)

In the webquest forum, under one single discussion thread – (Post your webquest
links here), post your final team webquest as replies to my post. DO NOT create a
new discussion topic please!

We will not be having a chat session for this activity, unless you feel one will be
needed. Do send me an email to that effect.
