Name: Kim Suhyr Bagis Batausa

Yr&sec: BSN II-F

ACTIVITY NO: 10

Objective: to be able to obtain blood sample through venipunture for blood chemistry
analysis and to know the different kinds of collecting tubes

Material:
syringe
Sterile cotton balls
Tourniquet
Blood collecting tubes
Isopropyl alcohol

Procedure:
Step by step instructions to obtain blood from a vein.
1. Prepare needle and syringe apply tourniquet to upper arm.
2. Immediately ask the patients to open and close his first several times simultaneously.
3. Cleanse skin of selected puncture site with alcohol and let dry.
4. “Fix” the vein by grasping the patients arm below the level of the elbow and pulling
the skin test then insert needle vein at approximately 25®angle.
5. Now ask the patient to relax his arm completely and to keep his hand open. Release
tourniquet presses an alcohol sponge over wound and simultaneously remove the needle
elevate the patients arm.
6. Detach needle from step of syringe and carefully transfer blood to collection tube. If an
anticoagulant is required add this to the blood immediately and mix gently but
thoroughly.
7. Label specimen with care includes patient’s full name, date, and any other info.
Customarily required by the laboratory.
8. Unless disposable equipment is used rinse both needle and syringe with tap water
(alcohol must never be used for his purpose) before the blood has chance to harden.

Observations:
1. What are the common methods used in collecting a blood sample and give the 2
common sites used?
♦ Venipunture
♦ Capillary

2. Enumerate at least 5 tests that can be performed using each methods of collection?
 Blood culture
 Blood bag system
 Coagulant blood test
 Anticoagulant blood test
 Blood type exam
3. Enumerate at least 6 different kinds of collecting tubes and its usage with the color
code and may show in diagram?
