Vitamin B-6 and methionine associated with reduced risk of lung cancer

High blood levels of Vitamin B-6 and methionine (an amino acid) are associated with a reduced risk of lung
cancer, say researchers from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer.
The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study involved over 519,000 volunteers
from 10 countries. Researchers obtained blood samples from over 385,000 volunteers and analyzed it for four B
vitamins (B-2, B-6, folate and B-12) as well as the amino acids, methionine and homocysteine.
Volunteers were followed an average of five years; those who developed lung cancer had lower levels of Vitamin
B-6 and methionine. People with above average levels of the nutrients had less than half the risk of developing
lung cancer – this was true for smokers, ex-smokers and non-smokers.

Brown rice may reduce your risk of diabetes


Boston, Massachusetts
By replacing white rice with brown rice or comparable whole grains, you may be able to reduce your risk of type 2
diabetes by 16-36%, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that eating five or more servings of white rice per
week was linked to an increased risk of diabetes, whereas eating two servings of brown rice was associated with
a lower risk. By replacing 50 grams of white rice with the same amount of brown rice, researchers estimate a 16%
lower risk. Replacing the white rice with whole grains reduces risk an estimated 36%.
To help protect against type 2 diabetes, researchers recommend that most dietary carbohydrates come from whole
grains rather than refined grains.

Age alone doesn’t predict risky, bad decisions

Cognitive (mental) functioning is more likely to predict sound decision-making than age, Duke University
researchers reported in the June 2010 edition of Psychology and Aging.
In the study, 54 older adults (aged 66 to 76) and 58 younger adults (aged 18 to 35) were tested on certain
cognitive abilities (memory and information-processing speed) and then given a variety of tasks that tested their
ability to make financial decisions.
It was discovered that cognitive ability largely determined sound decision-making. Once cognitive abilities were
factored in, age didn’t factor into decision-making skills. In some instances, older subjects made better decisions
than younger subjects who scored low on cognitive tests.
