ABSTRACT

1 CE 331- Geoinformatics Rishank Ranjan Singh (rishank@iitk.ac.in)

1. OBJECTIVES

1.1 What are the primary goals of the lab exercise?

o Presenting the objective(s) for the experimental procedure (what is being done in the experiment, such
as to measure something, to test something, to determine something, etc.); and
o Defining the purpose of the lab (the way the experimental procedure is linked to the learning context).

2. INTRODUCTION

2.1 What is the context in which the experiment takes place?

Saying what the lab is about, that is, what scientific concept (theory, principle, procedure, etc.) the researcher is supposed
to be learning about by doing the lab; and giving the necessary background for the learning context by providing pertinent
information about the scientific concept (this information can come from the lab manual, the textbook, lecture notes, and
other sources recommended by the lab manual or teacher; in more advanced labs you may also be expected to cite the
findings of previous scientific studies related to the lab).

3. EQUIPMENT/TOOLS/DATA USED

3.1 How did you do it? What exactly you used?

o Define the experimental setups. Provide the specifications of each and every equipment or software that
you used.
o Give a detailed description on the data used if any.
o Enlist any assumptions or considerations taken during the usage of the data in the experiments.

4. METHODOLOGY/EXPERIMENT

4.1 What did you do?

o Explain the methodology followed by means of an illustrative diagram or workflow.

o Elaborate on the experimental setup.
o Illustrate the operations carried out with the equipment.
o Define the Experiments carried out.

5. CALCULATIONS/MEASUREMENTS

5.1 What did you measure/estimated/established from the data/measurements?

o Define the measurements in an observation tables.

o Stepwise calculations.
o And so on.
6. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

6.1 What is the outcome of the Experiments?

o Results should stick to the facts as they have been observed.

o Summarize the overall findings of the experiment.
o Results integrate both visual (graphs, tables, drawings) and verbal (words) representations of the data.
o The verbal descriptions consist of series of findings (general statements that summarize or give the
important point of a visual) and support for the findings (further details about the data that give
pertinent information about the findings).
6.2 What does it mean?

o The purpose of the Discussion is to interpret your results, that is, to explain, analyze, and compare
them.

GI|CE|IITK Guidelines for Report 22/08/2018

o It is perhaps the most important part of the report because it is where you demonstrate that you
understand the experiment beyond the level of simply doing it.

7. CONCLUSION

7.1 What have I learned?

o The Conclusion returns to the larger purpose of the lab, which is presented as the learning context in
the Introduction: to learn something about the concepts that provides the reason for doing the lab.
o This is where you demonstrate that you have indeed learned something by stating what it is you have
learned.
o This is important because it helps you to understand the value of the lab

8. REFERENCES

8.1 What are sources that have contributed to this report?

o Use standard ISPRS citation style for references followed with in the text.
o Use standard referencing software such as Citavi or JabRef etc.

9. COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK

9.1 What is your feedback for this lab experiment?

9.2 What kind of problems did you encounter during this lab experiment?

9.3 How did you handle them?
