L&T GEO STRUCTURE LLP

INTRODUCTION
Foundation is a critical component of any construction activity - be it large or small. Larsen
& Toubro Limited, the Indian engineering giant entered the foundation business as early as
three decades ago with a small team of engineers, who gave engineering solutions to the
various business units of L&T.
In the late 1980s, L&T introduced hydraulic rotary piling rigs. Technology experts from the
market, with varied experience in both the domestic and international arenas were
recruited and formed the FGEC (Foundation & Geotechnical Engineering Cell), a competency
cell which was further strengthened with doctoral experts and academicians with research
orientation. These stalwarts undertook various jobs and built a solid knowledge-base and
expertise in this field. Realizing that mechanization and automation were the only way
forward to create infrastructure on a rapid basis, the role of FGEC was to implement
technologies, improve methods, productivity and quality at the worksite.
In 2012, L&T acquired a huge fleet of sophisticated foundation equipment and L&T
GeoStructure - a unique legal business entity, was formed to focus, capture and build
business across the ground engineering segment. The organization has four main vertical
businesses - namely:
 Piling
 Embedded retaining structures
 Marine and riverfront development
 Microtunneling
 Ground improvement, Soil investigation and Anchors
The services of a host of horizontal support functions like Finance, HR, Business
Development, Resources including P&M, Quality, Safety and ISD were enlisted for the
smooth functioning of the organization.
Headquartered in Chennai L&T GeoStructure has project sites all across India and regional
cluster offices in the North, South, East and West each with an Operations Head, in charge
of the operations of the entire region.
L&T GeoStructure executes all range of works in a timely manner with quality and safety
possessing the capability of providing breakthrough 'Design & Build' solutions, with vast and
speedy international networking for latest trends and technologies.

The gamut of activities includes execution of bored and driven piles, marine piles, secant
piles, sheet piles, contiguous pile walls, diaphragm walls, cut-off walls, ground
improvement, foundation testing and geotechnical investigation. A strong in-house design
team offers end-to-end solutions.
HUMAN RESOURCES
The L&T GeoStructure strength is currently 300 staff and 220 technicians. An array of expats
with niche area expertise is on board the team. Our HR team firmly believes that it is vital to
identify the right person for the right job. True to this dictum, talented and empowered
leaders are placed in key positions to effectively lead teams. Training and development of
people is highly regarded in the company. Competency gaps are identified and structured
training/development programmes to enhance skills are held on a regular basis. With this
people asset on board, the organization is poised to rise to greater heights in the days
ahead.
L&T GeoStructure PURPOSE and VALUES:
A vision is what you aspire to achieve, to become, and to create. Your vision does not
predict the future - it is a tool to help you create the future. In fact, a Vision Statement
allows the employees, shareholders, and other stakeholders to see where the company
wants to go, and what it wants to achieve. For any organization to function effectively and
move forward, there must be a compelling vision. L&T GeoStructure's vision is to become
the 'number one' Indian multi-national company in ground engineering business.

L&T GeoStructure has expertise in the above areas to provide `Design & Build' total
solutions to suit customer requirements. Underground metro stations and buildings with
many basements are some of the areas covered by this business vertical.
MARINE AND RIVERFRONT DEVELOPMENT
L&T GeoStructure has entered this business vertical, which will act as a major thrust for
business growth in addition to scope enhancement.

 Jetty, berth and breakwater

 Bridges across waterbodies
 Off-shore pylons for windmills and other structures
 Wave energy caissons
 Water supply structures (intake wells)
 Well foundations
 Earthen dams, barrages, weirs, waterways and irrigation structures
Experienced talent is in place to take up all kinds of marine structures.
GROUND IMPROVEMENT, SOIL INVESTIGATION AND ANCHORS
Ground Improvement

Page | 5
Ground improvement techniques are methods used by the geotechnical engineer for 'fixing'
the problems of poor soil to increase its bearing capacity, reduce settlements and the time
in which it occurs, retard seepage, accelerate the rate of drainage, increase the stability of
slopes, mitigate the liquefaction potential in seismic prone areas, etc.
L&T GeoStructure offers `Design & Build' innovative and value engineered ground
improvement solutions that may be used in a broad construction spectrum from industrial,
commercial and housing projects to infrastructure construction such as dams, tunnels,
ports, roadways and embankments.
Techniques

 Vibro Stone Columns

 Vibro Compaction
 Dynamic Compaction
 Sand Compaction Piles
 Prefabricated Vertical Drains
 Deep Soil Mixing
 Rigid Inclusions
 Micro Piles
 Grouting
The above techniques have been executed at various sites across India.
MICRO-TUNNELING
The technology pertaining to micro-tunneling system is new in India and there the scope to
use it on a wide scale in India. Many cities are facing problems due to old utility lines both
for water and sewage. The open-cut system of excavation creates large hindrance to the
public and the new technology can reduce this to a great extent. Micro-tunneling is
progressing in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Other cities like Chennai, Bengaluru and
Ahmedabad are likely to follow suit.
L&T GeoStructure is equipped to carry out micro-tunneling for various pipe diameters, with
experienced talent on board.
DEEP FOUNDATION-SUPPORTED BRIDGES
Bridges across water bodies are constructed using different technologies. Most of the
bridges in this category comprise foundations, piers and decks. Foundation and pier alone
contribute to about 50 - 60% of the total value.
With extensive experience in deep foundations and high-end equipment to carry out large-
diameter piles and barrettes, L&T GeoStructure has the expertise to carry out this work in a
holistic manner.
Major Customers

 Larsen & Toubro Ltd

 Gammon India
 McNally Bharat
 Chennai Metro Rail Limited
 Inland Waterways Authority of India, etc.
L&T GEO STRUCTURE CAMPUS
GREEN CAMPUS
L&T's Construction Division's Headquarters at Manapakkam in Chennai is acknowledged as
an 'Outstanding Corporate Green Campus'. It is spread over 27 acres, amidst scenic eco-
friendly surroundings with ample greenery. Almost every concrete structure in the campus
has won prestigious awards for excellence in construction and has green features which add
to its aesthetic value. Today, the campus accommodates 1.4 lakh sq.m of built up area and
has a significant tree carbon sequestering capacity.
ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
Business related to soil is always challenging, primarily due to large variations in properties
across the depth and breadth of any particular site. Engineering and Technology play a
major role in the ground engineering business. A critical scrutiny carried out by the
engineering team helps to choose the right method, equipment, human resources, etc. for
any project. In certain sites, the experienced strata are neither rock nor soil posing
challenges for both the equipment and brain power.
An in-house engineering and technology team has been set up comprising experts in the
area of geotechnical engineering, geology, rock mechanics, marine piling and technologists
with equipment expertise. This team has a unique blend of technical expertise with
extensive on-site experience. With the use of high-end software and in-house developed
applications, on offer are end-to-end solutions such as feasibility studies, conceptual
designs, comprehensive recommendations, detailed engineering and economic alternatives.
The engineering and technology team acts as a knowledge provider to mitigate the risk and
as a catalyst to speed up project execution and enter into innovative areas of this business,
thereby establishing L&T GeoStructure as a pioneer in the ground engineering space.
