CONFINED SPACE ENTRY

 Is large enough and so configured that an employee can enter bodily and perform work.
 Has limited or restricted means of entry or exit.
 Is not designed for continuous human occupancy.
 Confined spaces can include cellars, pits, drains, manholes, sewers and even some types of excavation.
 HAZARDS:
 Presence of toxic gas.
 Presence of flammable gas.
 Electricity hazards.
 Lack of oxygen.
 Restricted means of entry and exit difficult to escape.
 SAFETY MEASURES:
 Have an entry authorization authorizing you to proceed.
 Obey the instructions contained on the authorization eg. Wearing PPE etc.
 Ensure positive isolation (blind with tag) as per the blind list.
 Gas test shall be done before entry and periodically as per requirement.
 Isolate electrical equipment with provision of multi lock.
 Adequate ventilation and lighting.
 Ensure availability of an attendant all the time.
 Never attempt to rescue anyone unless you are trained for rescue.
 Ensure to Breathing and other personal protective equipment.
 Provision of ventilation and communication facilities at site.
 Display all warning signs and associated permits and authorization at the entrance.
 GAS TEAT LIMITS:
 Oxygen - 19.5 % to 23.5%
(For inert entry oxygen should be less than 5%)
 Lel - less than 10% for cold work without air mask
10% to 20% for cold work with air mask
More than 20% on atmospheric entry – only inert entry.
 Hydrogen Sulphide - less than 10ppm entry allowed without air mask
10ppm to 100ppm entry allowed with air mask
Greater than 100ppm no entry
 Other Toxic Gases - below the threshold (TLV) limit.
