Types Projects

Strategic project
In these projects, meeting a tactical goal on time and within
budget are key considerations. A strategic project, on the other
hand, has a primary goal of gaining the competitive advantage
by focusing on the organization's overall direction.

tactical goal
The steps or tactics needed to achieve the goals defined
in a strategic plan. For example, if a company's strategic
plan is to become a market leader, its tactical plan might
be to double the amount spent on advertising and
marketing.
Operational projects
Operations management is an occupational field concerned
with the design and management of products, processes,
services and supply chains. Operational projects vary widely.
They range from strategic to tactical and operational levels.
Compliance projects
Compliance projects involve implementing change within an
organization—or more broadly, in a social setting—to confirm
to rules, laws, policies and standards of governance that may
be imposed by regulatory bodies and government agencies.

Understanding Rolling Wave Planning:

Rolling wave planning is an iterative planning technique and a form of progressive elaboration in which

the work to be accomplished in the near term is planned in detail and future work is planned at a higher

level of the WBS.

Example:

During early strategic planning, when information is less defined, work packages may be decomposed to

the milestone level and then further decomposed into activities as more information is available for

them. Therefore, work can exist at various levels of WBS detail depending on where it is planned in the

project life cycle.

Note:

The concept of “progressive elaboration” is an important one in project management. We mentioned in

a previous session that project plan management happens iteratively throughout the project life cycle.

The reason for these iterations is that as we progress through the project, we learn more and more

about it. So progressive elaboration involves continuously improving and detailing the plan as more

detailed and specific information (including more accurate estimates) become available. It allows a

project team to define project work and manage it to a greater level of detail as the project progresses.

Rolling-wave planning is the process of project planning in waves as the project

proceeds and later details become clearer; similar to the techniques used in
agile software development approaches like Scrum.. Work to be done in the
near term is based on high-level assumptions; also, high-level milestones are
set.
Rolling Wave Planning is the process of project planning in waves as the project
proceeds and later details become clearer. Work to be done in the near term is
based on high level assumptions; also, high level milestones are set. As the
project progresses, the risks, assumptions, and milestones originally identified
become more defined and reliable. One would use Rolling Wave Planning in an
instance where there is an extremely tight schedule or timeline to adhere to;
whereas more thorough planning would have placed the schedule into an
unacceptable negative schedule variance. This is an approach that iteratively
plans for a project as it unfolds, similar to the techniques used in Scrum
(development) and other forms of Agile software development. The concepts of
Rolling Wave Planning and Progressive Elaboration are techniques within the
PMBOK Define Activities process and it also describes how the Project
Management Plan evolves.
