Penstock Piping
The Right Way
Penstocks have unique design requirements, installation challenges and
performance expectations. AMERICAN is the one provider that delivers

AMERICAN Ductile Iron Pipe (ADIP) offers 4- through 64-inch diameter

ductile iron pipe and fittings in Standard Pressure Classes up to 350 psi or
800 feet of head. ADIP piping has outstanding flow characteristics,
superior strength and durability, and gasketed push-on or restrained joint
options to fit the installation. It is well suited for smaller hydro projects,
especially in limited-access construction locations and flume

Rockland, Michigan replacements. A notable penstock installation in Hawaii – the Wailuku
River Project – used 60-inch diameter ductile iron piping. The Ketchikan
Lakes penstock replacement in Alaska used 54-inch diameter ductile iron
pipe in a pipe-on-piers installation.

For large-diameter projects, AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe (ASWP) delivers

high volume capacity, quality and strength in diameters up to 144 inches.
This is a spiral-welded steel pipe offered in wall thicknesses up to 1 inch
and yield strengths to handle low to high pressure and head
requirements. It meets or exceeds the requirements of ASCE Manual #79
or AWWA C200. For optimal service, linings and coatings that meet or
exceed AWWA C210, C214, C218 or C222 are available. In addition to
gasketed joints, ASWP offers lap- and butt-welded joint designs. The
Victoria Hydro penstock replacement near Rockland, Mich., used 114-inch
diameter ASWP piping (access the technical paper via the Engineering

the Danville, Va., penstock replacement, which used 70-inch spiral-
welded steel piping.
