accidents.
OSHA standards for walking and working
surfaces apply to all permanent places of
employment, except where domestic,
mining, or agricultural work only is
performed.
General Requirements
Housekeeping
‘All places of employment, passageways,
storerooms, and service rooms shall be kept
clean and orderly and in a sanitary condition
«Every workroom floor shall be maintained in a
clean and, so far as possible, a dry condition.
Where wet processes are used, drainage shall be
‘maintained and gratings, mats, or raised
platforms shall be provided.
‘+ Every floor, working place and passageway shall
be kept free from protruding nails, splinters,
holes, or loose boards.
Aisles and Passageways
‘Keep clear and in good repair with no obstruction
across or in aisles that could create a hazard.
‘» Permanent aisles and passageways shall be
‘appropriately marked,
‘« Aisles shall be sufficiently wide where mechanical

Covers and Guardrails
Covers and/or guardrails shall be provided
to protect personnel from the hazards of
‘open pits, tanks, vats, ditches, and the like.
Floor Loading Protection
Load rating limits shall be marked on plates,
and conspicuously posted.
No load shall be placed on any floor or roof
of a building or other structure that is j
greater than its load rating limit.

Protection for Floor Openings
«Standard railings shall be provided on all
‘exposed sides of a stairway opening, except
at the stairway entrance.

cover is removed, a temporary guardrail

stationed at the opening to warn personnel.
«Every floor hole into which persons can '
accidentally walk shall be guarded by either:

+ A floor hole cover of standard strength and
construction.
While the cover is not in place, the floor hole

shall be protected by a removable standard

Runways
