Class Description:
This course is a one semester course that is a compilation of over fifty-eight mathematical standards. It
provides the foundation to the language and application of algebra including the development of the
real number system, variables, mathematical expressions, linear equations, problem solving,
inequalities, polynomials, and special products. Upon completion of this course, students will take the
Math I EOC.

The year-long Math I course provides the foundation to the language and application of algebra
including the development of the real number system, unit conversions, proportions, variables,
mathematical expressions, linear equations, problem solving, inequalities, polynomials, and special
products. Upon completion of this course, students will be enrolled during the second semester in Math
I and will take the Math I EOC at the conclusion of the semester long course.

REQUIRED TEXTS AND RESOURCES:
● HONORS MATH 1 Requirements - Students are required to have received a score of 3 or higher
on the 8th Grade EOGs in all content areas.

Attendance Policy:
You must be in class every day. If an emergency arises and you cannot be in class, you must come after
school to get your missing assignments and learn the material missed. You will have five days to make
up any missing work. As per CMS policy, you cannot receive credit for this course if you miss more than
10 days during the semester. There will be a way for your to recover days with you teacher.

Tardies:
Students have six minutes to transition and report to class. The bell to start class will also serve as the
tardy bell. Any student not in their class at the sound of the bell is tardy and must report to the office to
receive a tardy pass.

COMMUNICATION: I can be reached by email - kimberlyc.parsons@cms.k12.nc.us. I can also be reached

by called the school and leaving a message. Students can also leave message notifications through
Canvas & Google Drive.

CELL PHONES, COMPUTERS, AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Students may not use cell phones for
personal use during class. Students will not utilize external speakers for others to hear. Electronics are
allowed during class time as permitted by the teacher for instructional purposes.

FOOD AND DRINK: Food and drinks are not allowed in the class at any time. Please do not have food or
drinks around technology at any time.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Hawthorne High School takes pride in providing opportunities and support for
students with special needs. All accommodations as stated in any child’s IEP and/or 504 Plan, will be
provided accordingly. Additionally, any student who may need additional support in the classroom
should seek information from the teacher, counselor or administration.

 COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Deadlines for all assignments are listed in Canvas.

GRADING: To determine your final grade in the course, I will calculate your percentage by dividing your
total earned points by the total points possible. These will be converted to letter grades as follows:

90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D < 60% = F

ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION: All work must be submitted electronically or through the student’s
Interactive Notebook. Students will take a picture of any paper assignment and submit that picture
through Canvas or Google Drive. If an assignment cannot be submitted electronically, the student must
make an appointment for an unscheduled Notebook Check, so that all work can be reviewed and
graded.

LATE WORK: Missed Work: Students are required to complete any and all missing assignments when
they have been absent, whether the absence is excused or unexcused. Those assignments will be
located in Canvas for the students to access. Sometimes copies will be available, but if there are no
copies available for the student, then it will be the student’s responsibility to either re-write the
document from Canvas or make a copy. Students do not receive full credit for missing or late work. All
missing work must be turned in within the week.

RETEST/RESUBMISSION POLICY: In order to take a retest, a student must:

1. Attend after school tutoring OR tutoring during lunch.
2. Complete (in tutoring) test corrections and justify why the answer is what it
is/your mistake.
3. The retest date will be announced after the test is given, and the date will usually
be within 10 days of the original test date. There will only be one retest date per
unit and retests will only be given on the current unit just completed.
4. Only students who score lower than an 79% on the original test will be permitted
to retest. In addition, the retest grade may not exceed 79%.
5. Students who score above a 79% are allowed to come after school and do test
corrections for half credit added back to grade.
Retesting is a privilege not an entitlement and therefore, if students are unable to attend a
tutoring to discuss test corrections, they will lose the opportunity..

CMS policy states that if a student is absent for the original test, they have up to 5 school
days to arrange a makeup of that same test with their teacher. This is student initiated.
