Due date: 23 August 2018 in the tutorial (No late or proxy submission) Total Marks [20]

1. Consider the following set of points with Cartesian coordinates (n1, n2, n3) such that
Case I: n1, n2, n3 are integers;
Case II: n1, n2, n3 are integers with only all even or all odd combinations permitted.
Do the points form a lattice for any of the above cases? If so what is the Bravais lattice? Justify your answers.

2. Determine the lattice and basis of the crystal structure shown in figure below.

3. Consider the following three points in a cubic unit cell: (1/4, ¼. ¾); (1/8,1/8, 1/8) and (7/8, ¾, 1/5). Draw them
in the unit cell. Identify a second identical site for each of these points within the same reference cell if the
structure is BCC. (Hint: use primitive vectors)

4. Iron at room temperature has bcc structure with lattice parameter a = 2.866 Å. Calculate the density of iron and
compare it with the measured value of 7860 Kg/m3 .

5. (a) Sketch the planes (231), (1̅ 2̅2), and (012̅) in an orthorhombic unit cell.
(b) Draw a cubic unit cell, label the axes and clearly show the directions [100], [2̅32], [32̅4], [122̅].
(c) Determine the miller indices of directions A, B, C and D shown in the unit cell below.

(d) What is the angle between (111) and (110) in a cubic lattice? (Show geometrically and analytically)

6. Construct a hexagonal prism (with 3 lattice points per cell) and indicate following planes and directions in it:
̅̅̅̅̅ (1̅011), [110], [11̅1], [021]
(1210), (1012),

7. (a) Compute and compare linear packing factor of [100], [110] and [111] directions in FCC crystal.
(b) Compute and compare linear packing factor of [110] and [111] directions in BCC crystal.
(c) Compute and compare planar packing factor of (100) and (111) planes in FCC crystal.
(d) Compute and compare planar packing factor of (100) and (110) planes in BCC crystal.
