CHAPTER I

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM

It has been observed most people have a wrong concept of fluency. They think,

it means to speak quickly or saying hundred of words per minute. Then, when

people talk very fast, sometimes others do not understand what they say

because they do not give meaning to the sentence or do not pay attention to the

pronunciation of words or the grammatical structure of sentences what makes it

difficult to communicate with others.

On the other hand fluency means people must increase their vocabulary, avoid

using tricks like "umm", "let me see", "I do not know" too much, because if you

use them a lot of, you are telling people that you do not know the word you have

to use after and pronunce the words correctly, in fact this is really important

because you might know many words, but if you fail to say them correctly, you

will not be understood, so if you want to other people can understand what you

want to say them and you want to have interesting and exciting conversations is

neccesary to developed fluency. Although this ability demands a lot of practice

and attention you can improve your English if you focus on improving this skill

every day.

According to recent observation, one of the most common problem in the

teaching-learning process is fluency speak skill. It has become a very difficult

situation because when students try to maintein a conversation, they are often

insecure and very worried about making mistakes, criticism and losing face. Also
learners are shy of the attention that their speech attracts, they complain that

cannot think of anything to say when someone ask something and they cannot

understand the meaning of one word, all this causes students do not have

successful conversations. Therefore, the researches considered that this

problematic situation presents two main variables of study to be measured which

are: personal factors as feeling of stress, anxiety or nervousness and academic

factors as listening comprehension, understand english pronunciation,

grammatical accuracy, vocabulary and organization ideas; this factors can

influence students in many ways and may impede their English language

learning and performance abilities, for this reason the purpose of this research

is to describe each of these factors and find possible solutions to this

phenomenon to students being able to use the language easier.

1.2 RESEARCH QUESTION

What are the different problems that affect the fluency speaking skills of Foreign

Language Extensive Program and the consequences that this carry up in the

students of the levels 12 and 14?

1.3 SCOPE OF WORK

The research Project, “The factors that affect students’ fluency speaking skills to

maintain an everyday conversation of level 12 and 14 of the Foreign Language

Extensive Program of Western University of El Salvador, Santa Ana 2018”

The research will be carried out in the Campus of the University, specifically, with

the Intermediate English group (Level 12 and 14) since they are the most
convenient population for the research due to the likeliness of the development

of the integrated language skills as they are in the core of the conversational

levels.

The time to be employment is relatively lacking for carrying out a research or

investigation like this one. To get the proper information, it is important to have

enough time to analyze the information (one of the techniques to be used will be

the oral survey). In fact, in this opportunity, time is unrelated to the investigation

since the researchers are totally involved with the theme of the research.

The problem in study is one of the most common but through the surveys is

expected to obtain the necessary results to analyze it and give recommendation

about the topic studied and how can be arranged.

1.4 JUSTIFICATION

This research is important because try to know principal factors that affect

students of Foreign Language Extensive Program of the University of El

Salvador, Western Multidisciplinary Campus speak fluency. It will help to provide

data about those factors and how to avoid effects of them in the fluency speaking

skills.

This research project could be help English teachers to reconsider students’

attitude that affect students’ learning English speaking skill and the way they

approach it.

However some students who learn English as a foreign language face a lot of

difficulties; the most difficult one is speaking because there is a big difference
between the native learners of the language and learners of the second

language.

“…learners from a specific first language usually produce many similar mistakes

resulting from the influence of their mother tongue. They try, for example, to use

the second language the same way they pronounce the first language.” (Bluers,

2005:3)

Chot Pal (2015) asserts that most of the difficulties that learners face in learning

English like a second language are the effect of the degree to which their first

language is different from second language.

To speak naturaly at the moment of maintaining an every day conversation is

necessary not hesitate, but why do students of levels 12 and 14 of the Foreign

Language Extensive Program do it? The research looks the cause of this issue

and determine some factors that is necessary consider to improve the fluency

speaking skills. Also, it will help students and teachers to be aware of the

problem they are facing.
