A hardware problem can cause Windows to become
unstable, but while some are easy to trace there’s one
that can be a real pain: faulty memory. Memory
problems can cause serious instability, but of course
there’s no way to spot a dodgy stick of memory by
looking at it.
Handily, Windows Vista includes a new Memory
Diagnostics Tool – find it by typing memory diagnostic
into the Start Menu search box. It’s also included in
Windows 7, called Windows Memory Diagnostic.
The tool first asks whether you want to restart and
perform a check immediately, or wait until the next
time you restart your computer manually. When the PC
restarts the tool loads before Windows does to perform
a series of intensive tests on the memory chips in your
computer. You can access more advanced settings by

In this Workshop we’ll explore how a free tool called Netlimiter 2
Even so, we all experience internet slowdowns from time to time and Monitor can keep on eye the internet traffic that is flowing across your
plenty of broadband subscribers have‘capped’packages that place broadband connections.

Step BEGIN BY DOWNLOADING NETLIMITER 2 Monitor. Launch a

web browser, type www.netlimiter.com/download into the Address
1 or Location bar at the top and hit Enter. Look for the 32-bit
download link under the Netlimiter 2 Monitor heading (take care
to pick the right one here, as the Lite and Pro versions are trial versions that
must be paid for after 28 days). If the File Download Security Warning
dialogue box appears, click Save and then choose a location for the
downloaded file. Firefox users should select Save File to save the download to
Firefox’s default download folder. e

Step WHEN THE DOWNLOAD HAS finished locate and

double-click the ‘nl_2011_mon.exe’ file to start the
2 installation. Work through the wizard, accepting all
the default options (unless you have good reason to
do otherwise). At the last step, Netlimiter 2 Monitor will prompt to
restart the PC. Click Finish to let it do this. e

Step WHEN WINDOWS RESTARTS NETLIMITER 2 Monitor will already be

running, indicated by a new icon in the Notification Area. To show the
3 Netlimiter 2 Monitor program window, right-click this icon and select

detects applications that are actively using the
computer’s internet connection, displaying them as
a list in the main part of the window. However,
programs are initially listed by their file name, which won’t always
be instantly recognisable. Fix this right away by right-clicking on
any entry in the list, then pointing to ‘Show application name’ and
click to tick Description. Now, Netlimiter 2 Monitor will list the
names of any applications it knows (such as Internet Explorer). e

Step THE BOXES TO THE right of each entry under the Connection list

5
show a ‘live’ measurement of each application’s internet use, both
incoming (downloading) and outgoing (uploading). Use the Units
dropdown menu to change the measurement type. Here, for
instance, we’ve chosen Mbits/sec because most internet service providers (ISPs)
market broadband packages using this measure. We can see that Internet
Explorer is currently hogging 5.92Mbits/sec of our 8Mbits/sec broadband
connection, as it is busy playing a Youtube video. e

Step THERE’S A FAIR BIT more to explore in

6
Netlimiter 2 Monitor. Just press F1 for full
instructions. However, here’s one last handy
tip. To view an application’s data use over a
particular time period, right-click the application’s name in
the Connection list and select Stats. Use the filters on the
left-hand side of the Stats dialogue to focus on a particular
time period, or change the measurement units. Note, too,
that it’s possible to view total internet use in the same way by
right-clicking on the computer name under Connection and
selecting Stats (useful for those on capped or metered
broadband subscriptions). G

in both versions of Word from the Columns dialogue box
(see Step 2). Try this. Open it and remove the tick next
to the Equal column width setting. All of the column
widths and the spacing between columns are now editable and you
can make fine adjustments either by clicking on the up/down arrows
next to these settings or by highlighting the numbers there and
typing in new ones. Here for example we’ve changed the widths so

method can be used to create as many tags as are needed. e

Step NOW USE THE SAME method to tag a second folder with

precisely the same way, otherwise synchronisation will

edited in a tagged folder will be automatically synchronised with other

first select a tag from the list, then either click the Tag button in the

application shortcuts to the SendTo folder on the hard disk. In Windows XP,
navigate to your username folder within the Documents and Settings folder

click the SendTo folder (note there’s no space). In Windows 7 or Vista, the
SendTo folder is more deeply hidden and is typically found in C:\Users\

need to deselect the ‘Hide protected operating system files’ option (in
Windows Explorer, select Tools followed by Folder Options, click the View
