and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) added
21 new sites to its heritage list on Monday.
Eight of the sites are all cultural sites. They
include Melaka and George Town, historic
cities of the Straits of Malacca in Malaysia,
which have developed over 500 years of
trading and cultural exchanges between
East and West in the Straits of Malacca.
Also are the Kuk Early Agricultural Site in
Papua New Guinea, which consists of 116
hectares of swamps in the southern
highlands of New Guinea 1,500 meters
above sea-level. The Historic Center and
Mount Titano of San Marino was also
included. This is the first time that Papua
New Guinea and San Marino enter the
World Heritage List. Other sites are in
Croatia, France, Germany, Italy and Slovakia
and include China’s Mount Sanqingshan
National Park. Other sites are in Cambodia,
Canada, Cuba, France, Iceland, Kazakhstan,
Kenya, Mexico, Switzerland, Italy and
Yemen.

he might not be sizzling on the ITF circuit these days but Sunitha Rao
reckons her consistent performance has prepared her well for the big
occasion – Beijing Olympics – where she will pair up with Sania Mirza to
compete in the women’s doubles event. Sania and Sunitha have been
given a wild card entry into next month’s quadrennial extravaganza by the
International Tennis Federation. “I feel I am prepared to play. I play against
these girls on a regular basis anyway and I believe in myself, so I think I’ll
do well,” Sunitha said from the United States. “I feel my greatest strength
would be my intangibles, my determination and my mental toughness.”

Good year
Sunitha has done well in the recent past on the circuit as she
reached the finals of an ITF event at Noida, semi-finals at Palm Beach,
United States and quarter-finals at Jackson and Boston events in the
United States. However, a singles title has eluded her despite the fact that
she has come close to winning it on more than one occasion. But the Indian is
unperturbed and rather argues that it is better to be consistent throughout than
winning once and struggling for weeks altogether.
“No, I do not feel I am missing anything except for experience. I’d rather
have consistent results, and win matches week in week out rather than
win an event one week, then lose first round the next two weeks.
Consistency in performance is the most important thing,” she
argued.
The Florida-based Sunitha said since she and Sania
play different tournaments on the circuit, it would be
difficult to practice together for a long period. “Sania
and I have different schedules but we are hoping to play
together for a tournament or two before the Olympics,”
she said. Asked if lack of time would prove detrimental
in their preparations, she said, “Sania and I would
probably like to play more tournaments together, but
there simply is not enough time or tournaments and
we’ll just have to do the best we can with matching up
our schedules.”

However, Sunitha said she plans to play more doubles
tournament for the preparation on her own. “I am trying to
play doubles at a few more WTA events before the Olym-
pics, to play against some higher ranked girls as prepara-
