Startup organization: Space Exploration Technologies Corp.

History:
Space-X, conceived in 2002, has gained worldwide attention for a series of historic milestones.
The company has grown rapidly since it was founded, growing from 160 employees in
November 2005 to more than 500 by July 2008, to over 1,100 in 2010, 1,800 in early 2012 and
3,000 by early 2013. In 2001, Musk conceptualized "Mars Oasis", a project to land a miniature
experimental greenhouse containing seeds with dehydrated gel on Mars to grow plants
on Martian soil. However, Musk realized that even with a much larger space budget, travel to
Mars would be prohibitively expensive without a fundamental breakthrough in rocket
technology. In October 2001, Musk travelled to Moscow with Jim Cantrell and Adeo Ressi, to
buy refurbished ICBMs (Dnepr) that could send the envisioned payloads into space. The
company had grown to 3,800 employees and contractors by October 2013 and had "nearly
5,000" in late 2015 and February 2016.

A. Overview:

Mission:
Develop space transportations, with the ultimate goal of making it possible for humans
to live on other planets.

Future vision:

 Keep the technological advances, innovative ideas, and ground-breaking research

happening.
 To send humans to Mars within 10 to 20 years.
 Creating reusable aircraft, which has never been attempted successfully in the past.

Company Goals:
 He (Musk) was trying to understand why rockets were so expensive and wanted to make
spaceflight routine and affordable.
 His goal is to ―revolutionize space transportation and ultimately make it possible for
people to live on other planets.
 Ultimately, our goal is to reduce costs by over a factor of ten, saving billions of tax
dollars and helping to launch a new age of discovery.
 Manifest of over 40 launches to deliver commercial satellites to orbit. Announced its
plans for Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket in the world.

B. Missions and achievements:

 2008: Falcon 1 becomes the first privately developed liquid fuel rocket to reach Earth
orbit.
 2009: Falcon 1 Flight 5 makes history, becoming the first privately developed liquid fuel
rocket to deliver a commercial satellite to Earth orbit
 2010: On December 8, 2010, Dragon became the first privately developed spacecraft in
history to re-enter from low-Earth orbit.
 2012: Dragon becomes the first private spacecraft in history to visit the space station.
 2014: FALCON 9 reusable test vehicle flies 1000m - Vehicle completes highest leap to
date, lands safely. NASA awards SpaceX contract to fly American astronauts.
 2015: On December 21, 2015, the Falcon 9 rocket delivered 11 communications satellites
to orbit, and the first stage returned and landed at Landing Zone 1 -– the first-ever orbital
class rocket landing.
 2017: On March 30, 2017, SpaceX achieved the world's first re-flight of an orbital class
rocket. Following delivery of the payload, the Falcon 9 first stage returned to Earth for
the second time.
 2018: Falcon Heavy is the world’s most powerful operational rocket by a factor of two,
capable of carrying large payloads to orbit and supporting missions as far as the Moon or
Mars.

C. Mars Colonization:
 Elon Musk announced SpaceX’s plan to make human life multi-planetary by
building a self-sustaining, one-million-person civilization on Mars. Now, he’s
authored a 15-page commentary adapted from his original announcement –
titled Making Humans a Multi-Planetary Species – published in the journal New
Space, which describes itself as “the only international peer-reviewed journal
dedicated to the era of new space innovation.”
 The manifesto is available free until early July and is a must-read for space and
sci-fi fans. Musk sounds starry-eyed while describing the reasons for going to
Mars (“It would be quite fun to be on Mars because you would have gravity that
is about 37% of that of Earth …”), So he’s someone who, to say the least, thinks
big and looks ahead.
 Musk's Mars vision centers on a reusable rocket-and-spaceship combo that he has
dubbed the Interplanetary Transport System (ITS). Both the booster and the
spaceship will be powered by SpaceX's Raptor engine, still in development,
which Musk said will be about three times stronger than the Merlin engines that
power the company's Falcon 9 rocket. The booster, with its 42 Raptors, will be the
most powerful rocket in history, by far. It will be capable of launching 300 metric
tons (330 tons) to low Earth orbit (LEO), or 550 metric tons (600 tons) in an
expendable variant, Musk said. For comparison, NASA's famous Saturn V moon
rocket, the current record holder, could loft "just" 135 metric tons (150 tons). ITS
rockets will launch the spaceships to Earth orbit, and then come back down for a
pinpoint landing about 20 minutes later. And "pinpoint" is not hyperbole: "With
the addition of maneuvering thrusters, we think we can actually put the booster
right back on the launch stand," Musk wrote in his New Space paper, citing
SpaceX's increasingly precise Falcon 9 first-stage landings.

D. Conlcusion:

SpaceX, founded with the goal to reduce space transportation costs and primarily
enabling the colonization to Mars has taught us to always focus on the bigger picture.
Elon Musk being the master-brain behind SpaceX, is no doubt extremely motivated and
driven personality, even after 3 launch failures of the SpaceX rockets, he had the
tenacity to continue and persist through the odds. His hard decision making and risk
taking abilities teaches us to be firm at every aspects of our lives. He strongly believes
on soliciting feedback and doing self-analysis and always constantly thinking of what he
has done and how it could be done better. His goal setting ability and driving his
employees to do better and better always not just makes him the world’s best leader but
also a soulful person who puts his heart in achieving those goals. Elon Musk’s character
teaches us a very important thing and that is with a big idea there is no scope for
setbacks and the only way to success in believing in the self.
