Get to know Chief Information Officer Will Conaway who joined Prime Healthcare this Spring to
guide our Information Technology path for the future. He is a seasoned IT leader, a certified Lean
Six Sigma Black Belt professional, and an adjunct professor at Cornell University.
Q: What are your top priorities?
A: Our patients. IT must deliver on
the organization’s promise to provide
compassionate care and clinical excellence to
all patients. IT will work from that standpoint
on every project, and we must be cognizant
about what value it will add for all stakeholders
internally and externally. We will continue
working with all departments on enhanced
revenue capture from our systems, especially
our electronic health record systems. We are
constantly looking for improved ways in which
we can automate processes to reduce costs
and better use our skilled resources, and drive
technology to generate new revenue streams.
Q: What are some of the new and exciting
trends in healthcare IT?
A: There will always be exciting trends in
technology. The key is to not lose focus
on what’s important: our mission, vision
and values. We will continue to seek out
technologies that support our key initiatives.
However, often the best investments you make
are the ones you did not make.
For example, a few years ago, people were
excited about the launch of the Google Glass
glasses and many healthcare leaders saw
great potential with the product. However, the
product had issues with privacy concerns of
putting cameras on users’ faces.
A recent survey conducted by the consulting
firm Impact Advisors stated one of the top IT
priorities for healthcare systems was getting
more value out of their EHR investment. At
Prime Healthcare, there is a large undertaking
underway to do exactly this. We are revisiting
our EHR build and our business processes, and
are working with key advisors to have a system
that not only adheres to best practices, but can
also let us achieve the results we expect and
Q: How do you encourage creative thinking
or new ideas within IT?
A: We must be not only creative, but
innovative in our approach. This requires an
IT organizational structure that systemically
encourages creativity, innovation, and
change. To be a consistent process, creativity
and innovation should be aligned with an
organization’s strategic realities. A properly-
structured IT organization will continuously
create new and improved replacements that
supersede yesterday’s best ideas. Everyone in
IT wants to make a difference in our patients’
outcomes, and technology can help.
Q: What makes IT at Prime Healthcare
unique?
A: It is the people. I have never seen a group
that has a more well-rounded education in
technology. People are expected to wear many
hats in the IT department, and this group
does it exceedingly well. People are willing
and able to work as a team to make sure that
things get done. This team is very receptive to
establishing new goals, improving and building
on past processes, and working as a team to
become a best-in-class IT department. I am
confident in our team and certain that we will
continue to grow, improve, and one day be
the envy of other healthcare IT departments. I
am proud to be part of this great organization
and associate with people who want to make a
difference.
Q: What do you do for fun?
A: I enjoy running, reading history, teaching
students at eCornell and Cornell University,
mentoring leaders, and collecting and learning
about vintage wristwatches and clocks. I have
great respect for antiques and technologies of
the past. I can be often found looking through
antique stores and museums.
