Document Conventions
Citrix Presentation Server documentation uses the following typographic
conventions for menus, commands, keyboard keys, and items in the product
interface:
Convention Meaning
Boldface Commands, names of interface items such as text boxes, option
buttons, and user input.
Italics Placeholders for information or parameters that you provide. For
example, filename in a procedure means you type the actual name
of a file. Italics are also used for new terms and the titles of books.
%SystemRoot% The Windows system directory, which can be WTSRV, WINNT,
WINDOWS, or any other name you specify when you install
Windows.
Monospace Text displayed in a text file.
{ braces } A series of items, one of which is required in command statements.

10 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center
Convention Meaning
[ brackets ] Optional items in command statements. For example, [/ping]
means that you can type /ping with the command. Do not type the
brackets themselves.
| (vertical bar) A separator between items in braces or brackets in command
statements. For example, { /hold | /release | /delete } means you
type /hold or
/release or /delete.
… (ellipsis) You can repeat the previous item or items in command statements.
For example, /route:devicename[,…] means you can type

This diagram shows Citrix Presentation Server Clients connecting to a server farm and
accessing published applications and resources.
You publish any given application or content once on the server, but multiple
users can simultaneously access the published resources. Application processing
on the client is kept to a minimum because the application runs entirely on the
server. The ICA protocol sends keystrokes, mouse clicks, and screen updates
between the server and the client, so to the user of the client device it appears that
the software is running locally.
Document Center Chapter 1 Overview 15
Because applications run on the server and not on the client device, users can
connect from any platform. For example, Microsoft Outlook running as a
published application looks and feels the same whether the user is connecting
from a Windows CE hand-held computer, a Macintosh desktop, or a Linux
workstation. You can control user connections to the server to prevent over-
consumption of licenses or server resources.
With many clients (including the Clients for Windows, Java, Macintosh, and
Linux), you can secure ICA communications using the Secure Socket Layer
(SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols. SSL/TLS provides server
authentication, encryption of the data stream, and message integrity checks and
enables you to deliver applications securely within a LAN or across the Internet.
This diagram shows local and remote control monitoring of a server farm using the
management consoles.

• Citrix Access Gateway. Users authenticate once and Password Manager passes
their credentials through to any information and application resource available
in the secure, personalized computing environment.
Password Manager provides a broad range of solutions:
• Centralized password management solution that can enforce a verifiable
security policy for current and legacy applications
• Allow users to reset their Windows passwords and unlock their Windows
accounts
• Time-saving Hot Desktop feature to allow users to quickly access their own
environment on a shared system
Access Gateway
Citrix Access Gateway is a universal SSL VPN appliance that provides a secure,
always-on, single point-of-access to all applications and protocols. It has all of
the advantages of IPSec and SSL VPNs, without their costly and cumbersome
implementation and management. Customers who purchase the Access Gateway
and Platinum Edition are entitled to the Advanced Edition of Access Gateway,
which includes Advanced Access Control. Use Advanced Access Control to
finely control both the resources users can access and what actions they can
perform, facilitating regulatory compliance. Access Gateway delivers the best
access experience for everyone: secure access to corporate data for the business,
easy access for users, and easy administration and management for IT.
The Advanced Access Control software included with your Platinum Edition
expands your Access Gateway environment and provides your users with the
following standard features.
SmartAccess
SmartAccess analyzes the access scenario and then delivers the appropriate level
of access without compromising security. Depending on who and where users are
and what device and network they are using, users are granted different levels of
access, such as the ability to preview, but not edit, documents.
20 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center
Advanced Access Control provides SmartAccess through two key phases: sense
and respond. In the sensing phase of SmartAccess, the system analyzes the user’s
access scenario and then responds with an appropriate level of access. Granted or
denied are no longer the only answers to an access attempt because organizations
not only control which resources users get access to based on their access
scenario, but how they can use these resources when they gain access. For
example, a user at an airport kiosk could be allowed to only preview or read email
attachments and files but would not be allowed to download, edit, or print these
files. However, that same user working from home may be granted full download,
editing, and printing capabilities. In addition, Advanced Access Control
integrates seamlessly with Citrix Presentation Server to give organizations this
same level of granular control over published applications.
SmoothRoaming
Advanced Access Control supports SmoothRoaming technology by ensuring that
as users move between devices, networks, and locations, the appropriate level of
access is configured automatically for each new access scenario.
Secure by Design
Advanced Access Control provides users with access that is inherently secure by
design, protecting both the security of company information as well as the
integrity of the network.
SmartAccess, SmoothRoaming, and Secure by Design technologies work
together by combining the following features:
Action controls. Allow administators to set policies that allow or deny viewing,
editing, and saving documents depending on the user’s identity, device, location
and connection.
Mobile device awareness. Refactors email and file interfaces for personal
digital assistants (PDAs) and small form factor devices.
Browser-only access. Provides access with any Web browser on any device to
Web sites, files, and email. You can automatically render Microsoft Office
documents for HTML Preview.

Advanced Presentation Server integration. You can use endpoint analysis and
client location to control which published applications are available to the user.
This feature extends SmartAccess to Presentation Server, including the use of
Advanced Access Control filters to control local client drive mapping, clipboard
operations, and local printer mapping.
Multilingual support. Provides full server and client support for Japanese,
German, French, and Spanish.
• There are additional benefits when streamed applications are run on client
desktops:
• Optimal utilization of computing resources
• Elimination of application compatibility issues
• Elimination of peripherals-access issues
Your organization can profit from these benefits by taking advantage of the many
streaming features included with this release of Presentation Server.
Your Presentation Server Enterprise or Platinum Edition includes connection
licenses for application streaming for desktops.
Depending on the size and complexity of the server farm, you can use a
Microsoft-supplied database tool or a true client/server database. Microsoft
Access and Microsoft SQL Server Express are suitable for small to mid-size
server farms. Client/server databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or
IBM DB2 are suitable for server farms of any size.
For conceptual information and procedures about how to install, configure, and
maintain Citrix Presentation Server, see the Citrix Presentation Server
Administrator’s Guide.
You install the Access Management Console from either the server CD or the
components CD. For information about how to install, configure, and use the
Access Management Console, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s
Guide. See the Help in the console for additional information about using this
tool.
You install client software from the components CD. For an introduction to the
methods you can use to deploy clients, see the Citrix Presentation Server
Administrator’s Guide. Each client also has a separate Administrator’s Guide to
help you deploy and configure the client.
Citrix continually updates its client software to support new client computing
platforms and operating system versions. Visit the Citrix Web site download area
at http://www.citrix.com/download/ for information about new and updated
clients.
For more information about the Secure Gateway, see the Secure Gateway for
Windows Administrator’s Guide.
This chapter introduces you to the new features and enhancements included in
this release of Citrix Presentation Server, which strengthen support in the
following areas:
• Continuous availability
• Enhanced end user experience
• Easy application deployment
• Secure access
New features and enhancements are available in all editions of Citrix Presentation
Server unless stated otherwise.
For detailed information about system requirements, configuration, and usage
instructions, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.
Continuous Availability
The following new features significantly reduce end user down time and increase
the consistency of user access experience.
Configuration Logging
Configuration Logging enables you to keep track of administrative changes made
to your server farms: which administrator made the change, what the change was,
and when it was made. It also enables you to revert those changes if necessary.
You can also create a Report Center report that lists these details, and also
indicates whether or not the change was successful, the object the change
affected, and various further details of the change. For further information on how
to configure and use Configuration Logging, see the Citrix Presentation Server
Administrator’s Guide.
32 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center
Secure Access
Citrix’s optimized secure architecture now provides Advanced Encryption
Standard (AES) support. It also protects clients and users from connecting to
untrusted servers. Clients can specify the requirements for trust and determine
whether or not they trust a connection to the server.
For example, a client connecting to a certain address (such as https://*.citrix.com)
with a specific connection type (such as SSL) is directed to a trusted zone on the
server. This trust relationship increases the confidence of client administrators
and users in the integrity of data on client devices and prevents the malicious use
of client connections. For further information on trusted server configuration, see
the Clients for Windows Administrator’s Guide.
Alerts storage and reporting. Alerts can now be stored in the Resource
Manager summary database, together with related information such as when the
alert occurred and which server was affected. This enables you to create a report
listing all the alerts that were generated during a particular period of time. For
further information on alerts storage and reporting, see Monitoring Server
Performance with Citrix Presentation Server.
34 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center
Monitoring profiles. Rather than configuring metrics for each server, you can
configure a set of metrics, save them as a monitoring profile, then apply that
profile to a range of servers. For further information on monitoring profiles, see
Monitoring Server Performance with Citrix Presentation Server.
