Introduction to Citrix Presentation Server

Citrix Presentation Server is the industry standard for delivering Windows
applications at the lowest cost—anywhere. Its application virtualization and
application streaming delivery methods enable the best access experience for any
user, with any device, working over any network. Presentation Server allows
delivery of applications as a service—providing on-demand access to users, while
affording the flexibility to leverage future application architectures.
Whether your users rely on Windows or Macintosh PCs or laptops, UNIX or
Linux workstations, thin-client devices, Windows-based terminals, wireless
devices, or other network appliances, you can use Citrix Presentation Server
solutions to:
• Provide tailored secure access control in any access scenario
• Deliver continuous access across devices, networks, and locations
• Provide scalability and continuous availability for any business scenario
• Protect information through a multidimensional secure architecture
• Observe, monitor, and measure access infrastructure resources

Citrix Presentation Server

Citrix Presentation Server enables multiple users to log on and run applications in
separate, protected sessions on a single server or on multiple servers. You install
Citrix Presentation Server on computers running Windows Terminal Services and
install and publish the applications or other resources that you want to deploy on
computers running Citrix Presentation Server. For example, you may want to
install office productivity applications (such as word processors and
spreadsheets), enterprise resource planning applications such as SAP and
Peoplesoft, or any other custom applications.
You can group a number of servers together to form a server farm. A server farm
is a group of computers that you manage as a single entity. Server farms provide
you with a flexible and robust way of deploying applications and content to users.
Document Center Chapter 1 Overview 13

Citrix Web Interface for Integration with Your Web

Server
Use the Web Interface to give users access to published resources through the
Web or your Intranet. Users log on to the Web Interface using their usual Web
browser and see links to the applications that they are authorized to run.
The Web Interface dynamically creates an HTML page that shows the server farm
for each of your users. After logging on, each user sees a Web page that includes
all the applications and resources in the server farm that you configure for that
user. Using the Web Interface, you can create stand-alone Web sites for
application access or Web sites that can be integrated into your corporate portal.
You can use the Web Interface with the Access Gateway or Secure Gateway (see
“Secure Gateway for Secure Internet Traffic” on page 15) to transport data
securely over the Internet, using standards-based security technology. To control
secure access to applications on computers running Presentation Server, you can
use Access Gateway access control policies and filters.
The Platinum Edition provides Web Interface integration with the Password
Manager self-service features: account unlock and self-service password reset.
Set up the Password Manager Service and have users register security questions
when they launch the Password Manager agent software. When the security
questions are registered, the users can reset their domain passwords or unlock
their domain accounts from the Web Interface, without help desk or administrator
intervention.

Citrix Presentation Server Clients for Secure,

Remote Access
Citrix uses the Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) protocol to exchange
information between a user’s client device and the published resources on the
computer running Citrix Presentation Server. The Citrix Presentation Server
client software is available for a range of different devices so users can connect to
published applications from various platforms.

This diagram shows Citrix Presentation Server Clients connecting to a server farm and
accessing published applications and resources.
You publish any given application or content once on the server, but multiple
users can simultaneously access the published resources. Application processing
on the client is kept to a minimum because the application runs entirely on the
server. The ICA protocol sends keystrokes, mouse clicks, and screen updates
between the server and the client, so to the user of the client device it appears that
the software is running locally.
Document Center Chapter 1 Overview 15

Because applications run on the server and not on the client device, users can
connect from any platform. For example, Microsoft Outlook running as a
published application looks and feels the same whether the user is connecting
from a Windows CE hand-held computer, a Macintosh desktop, or a Linux
workstation. You can control user connections to the server to prevent over-
consumption of licenses or server resources.
With many clients (including the Clients for Windows, Java, Macintosh, and
Linux), you can secure ICA communications using the Secure Socket Layer
(SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols. SSL/TLS provides server
authentication, encryption of the data stream, and message integrity checks and
enables you to deliver applications securely within a LAN or across the Internet.

Secure Gateway for Secure Internet Traffic

The Secure Gateway is a secure Internet gateway for ICA data traveling into and
out of a server farm. You can secure all traffic traveling across the Internet among
computers running Citrix Presentation Server and SSL-enabled client
workstations. Using the Secure Gateway makes firewall traversal easier and
provides heightened security by providing a single point of entry and secure
access to your server farms.

Consoles for Managing Your Deployment

Citrix provides two consoles for managing servers and farms both locally and
remotely.

This diagram shows local and remote control monitoring of a server farm using the
management consoles.
16 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center

Citrix Access Management Console

For Citrix Presentation Server, use the Access Management Console to manage
applications, servers, and farm properties. Create a variety of reports, configure
application access (both through the Web Interface and Program Neighborhood
Agent), and support Conferencing Manager guest attendee logons. In addition,
use the console to configure health monitoring tests, troubleshoot alerts, diagnose
problems in your farms, view hotfix information for your Citrix products, and
track administrative changes made with the console. For more information about
the console, see “Citrix Access Management Console” on page 26.
The Access Management Console provides additional benefits for Platinum
Edition customers—a single point of access for managing and monitoring the
password management, SmartAccess, and access control features of the Platinum
Edition.

Citrix Presentation Server Console

Use the Presentation Server Console to connect to any single server farm in your
deployment, to set up policies and printers, and to manage application isolation
environments and zones for the entire farm. Use the console to access
management components available only with the Advanced and Enterprise
Editions of Citrix Presentation Server (see “The Citrix Presentation Server
Family” on page 17). For more information about the console, see “Citrix
Presentation Server Console” on page 27.

access, such as the ability to preview, but not edit, documents.
20 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center

Advanced Access Control provides SmartAccess through two key phases: sense
and respond. In the sensing phase of SmartAccess, the system analyzes the user’s
access scenario and then responds with an appropriate level of access. Granted or
denied are no longer the only answers to an access attempt because organizations
not only control which resources users get access to based on their access
scenario, but how they can use these resources when they gain access. For
example, a user at an airport kiosk could be allowed to only preview or read email
attachments and files but would not be allowed to download, edit, or print these
files. However, that same user working from home may be granted full download,
editing, and printing capabilities. In addition, Advanced Access Control
integrates seamlessly with Citrix Presentation Server to give organizations this
same level of granular control over published applications.

SmoothRoaming
Advanced Access Control supports SmoothRoaming technology by ensuring that
as users move between devices, networks, and locations, the appropriate level of
access is configured automatically for each new access scenario.

Secure by Design
Advanced Access Control provides users with access that is inherently secure by
design, protecting both the security of company information as well as the
integrity of the network.
SmartAccess, SmoothRoaming, and Secure by Design technologies work
together by combining the following features:

Integrated endpoint security. Provides continuous real-time monitoring to

ensure that the device is safe to connect and remain connected to the network.
Endpoint analysis further evaluates the integrity of connecting devices and allows
you to tailor the level of access you grant in policies according to analysis results.

VPN connectivity. Network resources enable direct SSL virtual private

network (VPN) connectivity to servers, services, and networks within the
corporate LAN.

Action controls. Allow administators to set policies that allow or deny viewing,
editing, and saving documents depending on the user’s identity, device, location
and connection.

Mobile device awareness. Refactors email and file interfaces for personal
digital assistants (PDAs) and small form factor devices.

Browser-only access. Provides access with any Web browser on any device to
Web sites, files, and email. You can automatically render Microsoft Office
documents for HTML Preview.
Document Center Chapter 2 The Citrix Presentation Server Family 21

Secure access to Web-based email and files. Provides access to corporate

email securely over the Internet through a Web-based user interface. Allows users
to securely access Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes in real time and
synchronize information for offline use. Enables access to corporate network file
shares securely over the Internet through a Web-based user interface.

Advanced Presentation Server integration. You can use endpoint analysis and
client location to control which published applications are available to the user.
This feature extends SmartAccess to Presentation Server, including the use of
Advanced Access Control filters to control local client drive mapping, clipboard
operations, and local printer mapping.

Multilingual support. Provides full server and client support for Japanese,
German, French, and Spanish.

Standards-based encryption. Uses industry-standard SSL encryption to

provide secure access to corporate resources.

Common management platform. Provides a unified framework containing

client and server configuration, licensing, monitoring, and reporting tools for
administrative simplicity, business visibility, and corporate security.

Citrix Presentation Server Provider and

Citrix Presentation Server Management Pack
Working together, the Citrix Presentation Server Provider for Microsoft
Windows Management Instrumentation (Citrix Presentation Server Provider) and
the Citrix Presentation Server Management Pack for Microsoft Operations
Manager (Citrix Presentation Server Management Pack) enable system
administrators to monitor the health and availability of server farms running
Citrix Presentation Server Enterprise Edition. This enables administrators to
anticipate and react quickly to any problems that may occur.
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is the standard management
infrastructure included as part of Microsoft Windows 2000 or later. Two key
components of WMI are WMI providers and WMI consumers.
The Citrix Presentation Server Provider is a WMI provider that extracts
information about the server on which it is installed and the farm in which the
server is a member. The Citrix Presentation Server Provider presents the
information to a WMI consumer, such as Microsoft Operations Manager, a
management solution for Microsoft Windows 2000 server deployments.
The Citrix Presentation Server Management Pack is a plug-in to Microsoft
Operations Manager that interprets and reports information supplied by the Citrix
Presentation Server Provider. The Management Pack also includes an extensive
knowledge base with links to Citrix Knowledge Center articles and other sources
of information that administrators can use to interpret events and troubleshoot
problems.
The Citrix Presentation Server Management Pack requires the Citrix Presentation
Server Provider to be installed on every server about which you want to gather
information.
For more information about using Citrix Presentation Server with Microsoft
Operations Manager and WMI, see the Management Pack Administrator’s Guide
and the Provider for Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation
Administrator’s Guide.

Citrix Application Streaming

The application streaming feature simplifies application deployment to users.
With the application streaming feature, you can install and configure an
application on one file server and deliver it to any desktop or server on demand.
Upgrading or patching an application is simple, because you are required only to
update or patch an application stored in one place: on the file server.
Document Center Chapter 2 The Citrix Presentation Server Family 25

The application streaming feature offers the following benefits to enterprises:

• Cost effective, scalable application delivery to users and servers

• Lower cost of installing and maintaining applications and servers in large

farms
• Access any application, anywhere, anytime regardless of connection

• There are additional benefits when streamed applications are run on client
desktops:
• Optimal utilization of computing resources
• Elimination of application compatibility issues
• Elimination of peripherals-access issues
Your organization can profit from these benefits by taking advantage of the many
streaming features included with this release of Presentation Server.
Your Presentation Server Enterprise or Platinum Edition includes connection
licenses for application streaming for desktops.

What’s Included in Citrix Presentation Server Advanced

Edition
Citrix Presentation Server Advanced Edition is designed to provide a predictable
computing experience with outstanding performance from applications running
on a central server. This section describes the components included with the
Advanced Edition.

Citrix Presentation Server

Citrix Presentation Server is the server component of Citrix’s access
infrastructure computing solutions.
You install Citrix Presentation Server on one or more servers, and install and
publish the applications, server desktop, or other resources that you want users to
access.
For each server farm, you need a database called a data store. Citrix Presentation
Server uses the data store to centralize configuration information for a server
farm in one location. The data store maintains information about the servers,
applications, and administrators in the server farm. Using a data store ensures a
scalable and flexible system for managing your servers.
26 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center

Depending on the size and complexity of the server farm, you can use a
Microsoft-supplied database tool or a true client/server database. Microsoft
Access and Microsoft SQL Server Express are suitable for small to mid-size
server farms. Client/server databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or
IBM DB2 are suitable for server farms of any size.
For conceptual information and procedures about how to install, configure, and
maintain Citrix Presentation Server, see the Citrix Presentation Server
Administrator’s Guide.

Citrix Access Management Console

The Access Management Console extends your ability to manage your
deployment by integrating many of the administrative features of your Citrix
products into the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). The Access
Management Console is a stand-alone snap-in to the MMC. Management
functionality is provided through a number of management tools (extension snap-
ins) that you can select when you install the Access Management Console or at
any time later.
Use the Access Management Console to carry out the following tasks:
• Manage applications and servers in multiple farms. For example, you can
publish applications and configure farm and server properties.
• Manage client sessions and server processes.
• Create Citrix administrators and modify their privileges.
• Monitor server performance, and display performance data.
• Get context-sensitive information about alerts.
• Create reports.

connect to your Windows applications from virtually any client device and
platform, including:
• All Windows platforms
• Java
• Linux and UNIX operating systems
• Windows CE handheld computers and Windows-based terminals
• DOS
• OS/2 Warp
• Macintosh
28 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center

You install client software from the components CD. For an introduction to the
methods you can use to deploy clients, see the Citrix Presentation Server
Administrator’s Guide. Each client also has a separate Administrator’s Guide to
help you deploy and configure the client.
Citrix continually updates its client software to support new client computing
platforms and operating system versions. Visit the Citrix Web site download area
at http://www.citrix.com/download/ for information about new and updated
clients.

Citrix Web Interface

Using the Web Interface, you can create stand-alone Web sites for application
access or Web sites that you can integrate into your corporate portal. Deploying
the Web Interface involves the interaction of three network components:
• A server farm
• A Web server on which you install the Web Interface
• A client device with a Web browser and, depending on the platform you
choose, client software
See the Web Interface Administrator’s Guide for instructions about how to install,
configure, and customize the Web Interface. Note that before you install the Web
Interface you must install the Access Management Console.

The Secure Gateway

The Secure Gateway enables you to secure access to server farms, which host
published resources that network users can access over the LAN or WAN, and to
access centers, which allow access to Web content, internal Web servers, and
published resources. The Secure Gateway transparently encrypts and
authenticates all user connections to protect against data tampering and theft.
When a user clicks an application icon using the Web Interface, the Web
Interface contacts a service called the Secure Ticket Authority (STA) for a
“secure ticket.”
The user’s connection to the application is then routed through the Secure
Gateway, which is usually in the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The Secure Gateway
server validates the ticket with the STA. If the ticket is valid, the STA provides
the address of the server that can provide the application.
You install the Secure Gateway from the components CD. The STA is
automatically installed with Citrix Presentation Server; it does not have to be
installed on a separate server.
Document Center Chapter 2 The Citrix Presentation Server Family 29

For more information about the Secure Gateway, see the Secure Gateway for
Windows Administrator’s Guide.

Citrix SSL Relay

If you want to secure all communications within your environment using SSL or
TLS, you can use Citrix SSL Relay to secure communications among supported
clients, the Web Interface, and computers running Citrix Presentation Server.
To deploy Citrix SSL Relay, you need server certificates on each computer
running Citrix Presentation Server or the Web Interface.
Citrix SSL Relay is a feature of all Citrix Presentation Server installations.
For more information about Citrix SSL Relay, see the Citrix Presentation Server
Administrator’s Guide.

Conferencing Manager for Citrix Presentation

Server
This component adds intuitive application conferencing to Citrix Presentation
Server that eliminates the geographical distance between team members,
increases the productivity of meetings, and allows easy collaboration.
Citrix Presentation Server Advanced Edition is designed with the small to
medium business in mind. The Advanced Edition enables all of the features
included with the Standard Edition and also provides advanced load management
using Load Manager.

Load Manager for Citrix Presentation Server

You can set up, monitor, and balance the server and published application loads
in a server farm so that users can run the published applications they need quickly
and efficiently.
The criteria you define in Load Manager determine which servers are least busy
and can best run an application. When users launch published resources, Load
Manager selects which server will run the application or desktop session, based
on server load. Load Manager ensures that the application runs on a server that is
not overloaded, and so improves performance for users.
Using Load Manager also offers increased availability. By configuring a pool of
servers capable of running your users’ applications, you can easily bring servers
off-line for maintenance or add more servers for increased performance without
affecting application availability.
Load Manager is installed automatically when you install Citrix Presentation
Server Advanced Edition. For more information about Load Manager for Citrix
Presentation Server, see the Load Manager Administrator’s Guide.

New in this Release

This chapter introduces you to the new features and enhancements included in
this release of Citrix Presentation Server, which strengthen support in the
following areas:
• Continuous availability
• Enhanced end user experience
• Easy application deployment
• Secure access
New features and enhancements are available in all editions of Citrix Presentation
Server unless stated otherwise.
For detailed information about system requirements, configuration, and usage
instructions, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.

Continuous Availability
The following new features significantly reduce end user down time and increase
the consistency of user access experience.

Configuration Logging
Configuration Logging enables you to keep track of administrative changes made
to your server farms: which administrator made the change, what the change was,
and when it was made. It also enables you to revert those changes if necessary.
You can also create a Report Center report that lists these details, and also
indicates whether or not the change was successful, the object the change
affected, and various further details of the change. For further information on how
to configure and use Configuration Logging, see the Citrix Presentation Server

Health Monitoring & Recovery

You can proactively monitor farm health by running Health Monitoring tests on
servers to ensure that if one of them has a problem (for example the Citrix IMA
Service may be down, or there may be a problem with Terminal Services), this does
not interfere with the user’s ability to access the application through another server.
You can specify different recovery actions to be taken automatically if a server fails
a test; these include restarting the server or preventing it from being used for load
balancing until the problem is fixed.
Citrix supplies a set of tests that run by default on all servers, and you can also
supply your own or third party tests.
Health Monitoring & Recovery is available only with the Platinum and Enterprise
Editions of Citrix Presentation Server. For further information on Health
Monitoring & Recovery, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s
Guide.

Non-Administrator Client Installation

Users who do not have administrator privileges on a locked down device, such as
a computer in an Internet cafe or a kiosk, can download and install a modified
Web Client on a per user basis. In this way, users can have secure, remote access
to their applications. For further information on non-administrator client
installation, see the Clients for Windows Administrator’s Guide.

Enhanced End User Access Experience

End user access experience is enhanced by the increased responsiveness of
graphics-intensive applications offered through SpeedScreen Progressive
Display. This feature also facilitates remote use of these graphics-intensive
applications and reduces bandwidth usage.
A lossy compression scheme reduces the size of image files for faster throughput.
The compression scheme removes redundant data while attempting to minimize
the loss of information. In this way, SpeedScreen Progressive Display offers you
a trade-off between the quality of photographic image files as they appear on
client devices and the amount of bandwidth the files consume on their way from
server to client.
For further information on SpeedScreen Progressive Display, see the Citrix
Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.
Document Center Chapter 3 New in this Release 33

Easier Application Deployment

You can install and configure an application on one file server and the application
is streamed to any other server on demand. Upgrading or patching applications is
quick, because only one installation needs to be updated.
Application streaming offers the following benefits to enterprises:
• Cost effective, scalable application delivery to end users
• Lower installation and maintenance costs for applications and servers in
large farms
• Access to any application, anywhere, any time, regardless of connection
Application streaming is available only with the Enterprise Edition of Citrix
Presentation Server. For further information, see the Citrix Application Streaming
Guide.

Secure Access
Citrix’s optimized secure architecture now provides Advanced Encryption
Standard (AES) support. It also protects clients and users from connecting to
untrusted servers. Clients can specify the requirements for trust and determine
whether or not they trust a connection to the server.
For example, a client connecting to a certain address (such as https://*.citrix.com)
with a specific connection type (such as SSL) is directed to a trusted zone on the
server. This trust relationship increases the confidence of client administrators
and users in the integrity of data on client devices and prevents the malicious use
of client connections. For further information on trusted server configuration, see
the Clients for Windows Administrator’s Guide.

Further Enhancements in this Release

Further enhancements in this release include:

Alerts storage and reporting. Alerts can now be stored in the Resource
Manager summary database, together with related information such as when the
alert occurred and which server was affected. This enables you to create a report
listing all the alerts that were generated during a particular period of time. For
further information on alerts storage and reporting, see Monitoring Server
Performance with Citrix Presentation Server.
34 Getting Started With Citrix Presentation Server Document Center

Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 support. The Citrix Presentation Server

Management Pack now provides full support for MOM 2005 features. For further
information, see the Management Pack Administrator’s Guide.

Monitoring profiles. Rather than configuring metrics for each server, you can
configure a set of metrics, save them as a monitoring profile, then apply that
profile to a range of servers. For further information on monitoring profiles, see
Monitoring Server Performance with Citrix Presentation Server.

Automatic proxy detection support. Proxy servers can be automatically

detected: this means users do not have to configure the proxy server manually. In
larger environments, this also means administrators do not have to support
incorrect or dynamic configurations. For further information, see the Clients for
Windows Administrator’s Guide.

Program Neighborhood Agent backup URL support. Administrators can

specify backup URLs for Program Neighborhood Agent in their Web Interface
configuration. In addition, if Program Neighborhood Agent cannot connect to the
Web Interface, administrators can specify backup URLs in a new .MSI package
property. For further information, see the Web Interface Administrator’s Guide.

Multilingual user interface. The Windows Installer package automatically

installs the clients in all supported languages. Beginning with version 10.0 of the
Clients for Windows, language-specific installation packages are no longer
available. For further information about the multilingual user interface, see the
Clients for Windows Administrator’s Guide.
