hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans. "Sweet gas" in petrochemistry is defined as a (natural)
gas low in concentration of sulphur compounds (in particular H2S). (See Section 5.0)
1.12 Sour Gas = A petroleum natural gas containing an appreciable quantity of hydrogen
sulfide and/or mercaptans.. Natural gas is usually considered sour if there are more than
5.7 milligrams of H2S per cubic meter of natural gas, which is equivalent to approximately
4 ppm by volume. Although the terms acid gas and sour gas are used interchangeably,
strictly speaking, a sour gas is any gas that contains hydrogen sulfide in significant
amounts, whereas an acid gas is any gas that contains significant amounts of acidic gases
such as carbon dioxide (CO2) or hydrogen sulfide. Thus, carbon dioxide by itself is an acid
gas but it is not a sour gas. (See Section 6.0)
1.13 Acid Gas = Acid gas is natural gas or any other gas mixture which contains significant
amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), or similar contaminants. The
terms acid gas and sour gas are often incorrectly treated as synonyms. Strictly speaking,
a sour gas is any gas that contains hydrogen sulfide in significant amounts; an acid gas is
any gas that contains significant amounts of acidic gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) or
hydrogen sulfide with a low dewpoint. Thus, carbon dioxide by itself is an acid gas but not
a sour gas. (See Section 6.0)

2.0 Introduction
The primary purpose of using a needle valve is to have precise control of product flow to an
indicator, an instrument or oother component.
Needle valves are precise valves which have a needle-shape plunger. Different internal structures
are available for needle valves. The plunger may be needle tipped, conical tipped or ball shaped.
The seats may be made of elastomeric material (soft seat) or metal (hard seat). Needle valves may
be used on both piping and tubing runs. They can also be purchased having NPT or ferrule and nut
tubing connections.

Needle valve bodies are commonly constructed of either carbon steel or stainless steel. In highly
corrosive applications such as acid gas, H2S, or saturated carbon dioxide processes, needle valves
with stainless steel body material are highly recommended and preferred by Enerflex.
Diverse designs make these valves function in different fashions, including isolation (blocking) or
blocking and bleeding. Manifolds and monoflanges basically use three or five integrated needle
valves to control and direct the process flow to instrumentations.

bleed valve (courtesy of Century)
In sour services, a block and bleed valve shall be used for bleeding and calibration. As an option, a
manifold valve or a monoflange may be used in sour applications, too.
Manifold Valves
Manifold valves are designed in diverse styles and can be installed remotely or locally. They also
can be used on multi inlet instruments, such as differential pressure transmitters.
Three valve manifolds may or may not have vent ports. Two valves block the process lines to the
instrument, while the third valve controls the equalizing path between two process lines. See Figure
7.
Five valve manifolds typically have two main blocking valves and another three valves on
equalizing and vent lines. See Figure 8.
Manifolds may be connected through threaded ports, be installed directly on the instruments as a
wafer plate, or can be connected to process lines through integrated flanges.
Monoflanges
Monoflanges have vibration control advantages (less mass), need less room, and may save on
installation labor cost. Instruments can be directly installed onto monoflanges, based on design.
See Figure 9.

Enerflex Engineering Standard specifies the use of stainless steel monoflanges. As stainless steel
monoflanges are more common, they generally have lower price and/ or shorter delivery times than
carbon steel monoflanges.
Important Note: Stainless steel ANSI flanges have lower pressure ratings compared to same
class carbon steel ANSI flanges. The PSV setting may need to be changed
such that the system pressure does not exceed the stainless steel flange
pressure rating. If this is not possible, the other solution would be to
increase the ANSI class rating on the both carbon steel flange (on process
line) and stainless steel flange (monoflange).
Example: Process line is initially rated for 150# flange. We may use 300#
carbon steel flange on process line and a monoflange with 300# stainless
steel flange connection.
• All needle valves shall be hard seat, with Teflon packing material.
• The standard valve body material will be carbon steel. Stainless steel will be used only on
NACE rated lines.
• The standard needle valve shall be FNPT, with the same size on both ends (see next
bullet).
• Only when a needle valve is installed directly on a process line ( needle valve used instead
of a root valve), and an instrument with ½” male connection is directly installed on outlet
port, a ¾” MNPT X ½” FNPT needle valve shall be used. An installed threadolet on the line
will provide the female connection.
Note: To install needle valves directly on hub (threaded) flanges, a specially designed needle valve
with a lag shall be used (See table 6). Enerflex standard is a customized product of the Century
CM11 series for this application. This will eliminate the risk of valve’s male connection bottoming
out against the female threads on the hub.
• Standard needle valve used on purge lines of a sour gas reciprocating compression unit
shall be stainless steel, tube connection Swagelok needle valves (SS-1VS4).
• To have the needle valve physically accessible, needle valves with an extended body shall
be used if the valve is directly installed on a wafer bleed ring. The other practice is using a
nipple for needle valve’s installation.

• Multiport needle valves shall be used on sweet applications, on impulse and process
venting lines. Customer specs supersede this practice.
• Block and bleed valves shall be used on sour applications, on impulse and process venting
lines. Customer specs supersede this practice.
• Single inlet Pressure Indicators shall use block and bleed needle valves. Customer specs
supersede this practice.
5.0 Selection
If the customer’s specification requires a specific brand (or model) of needle valve, the PE shall
follow that specification.
If specification does not exist, the PE shall use the following tables:
Tables 1 to 5 show the standard brand and models for Canada manufacturing for isolation valves,
multiport needle valves, block and bleed valves, manifold valves, and monoflanges.
