graduate engineer may work in a wide variety of fields, and its difficult to answer your other
questions in that case. He may work in design, on either whole aircraft or components or
systems, he may work million US dollars, almost 20 years ago and kept the programme on
schedule. I now teach undergrads to do the same sort of thing. One of our recent graduates works

State Bank Of India (SBI) Seeks Finmin Nod To Raise Rs 20,000 Crore From Markets
Last Updated: 2010-09-17T15:56:20+05:30

The country’s largest

bank, State Bank of
India, (SBI) is planning to raise Rs 20,000 crore of capital from the markets.
Accordingly, it has sought the approval of the ministry of finance (MoF).

“We have received the proposal from the bank. We are examining it,” said R Gopalan,
secretary, financial services.

On the mode of collection by SBI, he said that the bank would choose to tap the market.
He also said, “They have suggested everything.”

According to a senior SBI official, the will take care of its fund requirement for the next
couple of years. The bank plans to raise about Rs 40-50,000 crore over next five years.

“The exact amount and nature of instruments will be decided by the mutual consultation
between SBI and the government,’’ said the official.

He also said that the capital will meet the requirements of the bank’s Basel-II only and
not for the yet to be implemented Basel III plan.

It is said that the proposed capital would enable the banking major to enable 20-25% of
growth in future.

Earlier, the SBI chairman OP Bhatt had announced that the bank plans to raise Rs
20,000 crore through a rights issue.

Just a few days before, the parliament had passed the State Bank of India
(Amendment) Bill where government equity will be reduced to 51% from a minimum of
55%.

RBI Hikes Key Rates

Last Updated: 2010-09-16T15:33:08+05:30

The Reserve Bank

of India (RBI) lifted
the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6% and the reverse repo rate by 50 points to 5%.

The Reserve Bank, on Thursday, raised its key short-term lending rate by 25 basis
points and borrowing rate by 50 basis points to check rising prices.

This the fifth time in 2010, that the central bank was forced to rise its key rates because
of rising inflation.

"Inflation remains the dominant concern in macroeconomic management", RBI said

while raising the repo (lending) and reverse repo (borrowing) rates to 6 per cent and 5
per cent, respectively.

The new rates were announced as part of the first scheduled mid-quarterly review of the
monetary policy, the RBI said in a statement.

The hike in rates is expected to make the loans expensive due to rise in cost of funds
for the banks. At the same time, it will reduce the consumption.

According to the last report on inflation, the rate was 8.5% in August. But, it increased to
15.10% for the week ended September 4.

RBI Plans Bringing Mobile Bank To All Villages By 2015

Last Updated: 2010-09-13T15:59:52+05:30

Reserve Bank of
India (RBI), as an
initiative to reach financial services to rural areas also, is planning for mobile banks. The
apex bank is also aiming to reach the mobile banking services to cover all the villages
by 2015 RBI’s Deputy Governor K. C. Chakrabarty said.

Initially, the mobile bank would come with limited number of services. The mobile bank
offers services including accepting deposits and allowing withdrawals.

The bank is reported to have told that every villager would be financially included in the
next 5 years.

Accordingly, the mobile bank, which is nothing but a vehicle would be arranged by a
specific bank with authorised officials in it. The vehicle would travel around the villages
and engage in financial services with villages.

RBI has plans of bringing banking facilities to all the villages having population of at
least 2000.

Rbi
he Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released its annual report for 2009-10 today. Along with the dividend it
pays the government what is of interest is its assessment of the economy. The clarion call of the
assessment is that growth is robust and hence the balance of policy has shifted to inflation control.
The report focuses primarily on the analytical assessment of key policy issues, the policy decisions taken
to address macroeconomic challenges face during the year and how the RBI’s operations in pursuing the
desired objectives reflected in its financial accounts.
Outlook for growth and inflation in 2010-11
In its near-term forecast for the economy, the RBI report suggests that while the growth outlook for
financial year 2010-11 remains robust, inflation has emerged a major concern. Growth has persisted amid
global weakness, and agri shortfall, it says. The report says there were clear signs of growth visible in the
fourth quarter of financial year 2009-10.
The report states it is necessary to sustain growth and also contain supply side inflation risks to address
structural constraints as the monetary situation normalizes. With headline inflation at double-digit for four
months, the balance of policy has shifted to inflation, the RBI indicated in its report.
The report further states that the GDP growth outlook has improved significantly. It expects the growth
momentum driven by industrial and services sectors to continue going forward. The RBI feels investment
demand and growth of production of capital goods is robust. Robust corporate earnings, and consumer
durable sales showed growth in private consumption demand. It expects this growth in consumption
demand to make growth self-sustaining ahead.
Fiscal exit plan
The RBI plans to continue with its fiscal exit policy going forward. The report states that a rightly timed exit
has been recognized in view of inflationary pressures. The RBI report further states that it had to
accelerate the exit of accommodative policy to anchor inflation expectations. It aims to improve
contribution of finance towards a rapid and inclusive growth.
Outlook on global economy for 2010-11
It states that while concerns over weak global recovery persists, domestic risks to growth have receded
significantly. Volatility in global markets have affected Indian stock markets, the report says. It cautions
that the near-term global outlook for trade and capital inflows is uncertain and risk aversion may lead to
more volatile capital inflows. A fast domestic growth and low global growth means India's deficit will
expand, the report says, adding, an uncertain world economy warrants caution in domestic policy.
Near-term challenges
The report says repeated supply shocks have posed a constant challenge to ensuring a low inflation
regime in India, which is necessary to achieve high inclusive growth.
It says the fiscal space in India is critical not only for the usual output stabilisation requirements around a
high growth path, but also to limit the impact of temporary but large supply shocks on headline inflation.
The report adds that volatile capital flows have been a potential source of instability for emerging market
economies. Costs could magnify for an economy during periods of both too little and too much of capital
flows, unless they are managed judiciously.
It notes that Indian productivity is below ASEAN countries and China. The report says it is critical to raise
productivity levels, and investments in technology and infrastructure. It proposes larger capacity
addition as the infrastructure gap in power is high. Public investment still to play a role in bridging
infrastructure gap, the report says.
Bank credit to the infrastructure sector saw an annual compounded growth of 49% in the last 10 years. It
indicates that banks continue to be prime source of financing for infrastructure projects and an alternate
non banking financing means for infra lending is required.
RBI's balance sheet for 2009-10
Gross income was down 45.85% to Rs 32,884 crore versus 60,731 crore the previous year. Gross
expenditure was up 2.2% to Rs 8,403 crore as against Rs 8,218 crore. Earnings from FX currency assets,
gold was down 50.58% to Rs 25,103 crore. Rate of earnings on foreign currency assets came iin lower at
2.09% compared to 4.16%. The surplus to the government was Rs 18,759 crore as opposed to Rs 25,009
crore
