How does technology (digital devices...

mobile phones, tablets, and online courses) affect the


behavior and learning for children born after 2005?

1. The Creation of ARPANET - 1969


a. Many people are familiar with the creation of the internet, but they are not aware
of its predecessor, the ARPANET. Created by the government’s defense sector,
it was used for communication across larger distances through networks and
data packets to alert the government of any threats. It was the first of its kind,
which led to the development to widely known Internet today.
i. Created by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of
the United States Department of Defense
ii. Was used for communication via through packet switching
iii. Was a early operational internet
iv. led to development of computers and internet
v. Used satellite to incorporate communications for the defence
department of communications
vi. Not used for educational or consumer use

2. Apple Inc. introduces first consumer grade computer - 1977


a. Apple Incorporated comes out with their first product, the Apple 1, which was
created by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. It allowed for people to use calculator
and type things onto a screen with a connection to the keyboard. More
importantly, one of the computers was used in a high school math class that
helped the students with math and calculations.
i. Made by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs
ii. Used as calculator, but could not store information
iii. Could play a simple game
iv. First computer to connect to a screen and display numbers
and text
v. First of its kind, leading to the creation of many clones and
eventually higher functioning computers

3. The launch of the Internet - 1991


a. ARPA further developed the ARPANET, but they were only able to conect up to 4
computers to it. Soon however, they added ALOHANET as well as the Royal
Radar Network in Sweden. This however still would not be considered the “World
Wide Web.” In 1991 however, Tim Lee, in Switzerland found a way to globalize
the network, anyone who had access to the Internet had a connection to anyone
with access as well.

internet

4. High Definition TV’s accessible to consumers - 1998
a. With the release of a high definition televisions to the consumers,
people have increased their demand for such a television. It means that shows
that are streamed now look realistic and are more pleasing to the eye. More
specifically, kids can now watch their idols and programs as if they were in front
of them.
i. HDTV’s are still used today
ii. Later developed, live showings of many shows can be done
iii. More people wish to watch tv shows
1. This includes educational shows and programs like
(PBS, Discovery, Disney Kids)

5. Launch of Social Media (MySpace, Facebook) - 2003, 2004 respectively


a. Before social media, the only way to communicate through the internet was
instant messaging and email. With social media launched, people could now not
only send text, but pictures and share other things on a large scale. This allowed
people to come in contact with each other who have not seen each other in
years.
i. This led to the development of many new social medias
(instagram, twitter, snapchat, linkedin, reddit, youtube)
ii. It allowed people to stay in contact with each other without the
need to personally message someone
iii. Allows things to become viral and spread extremely fast
(versus talk shows)

6. Release of the iPhone - 2007


a. Before the iPhone, there were touch screen devices that still held access to the
internet, but they were not well known, well functioning, or completely touch
screen. The iPhone also allowed for an “Appstore” which allowed for applications
to be uploaded and downloaded. Before the app store, there were set
applications hard coded onto a phone and thus to use.
i. Allowed for apps specifically meant for mobile devices
ii. Allowed for technology to be at accessed so conveniently
iii. Allowed for connection anytime, anywhere - including photos
and videos through social media

7. Introduction of Mobile Social Media (Instagram, Snapchat) - 2010, 2011 Respectively


a. The release of a portable phone with all the functionality of a computer led to the creation
of applications specifically dedicated to the phone. Along with help applications like the
calculator or maps, came with social media. As more and more people use Snapchat and
Instagram more and more often, it begin to alter their behavior and perhaps permanently.
These apps can due this do to the constant notifications and feedback one can get on
their photo/post.
i. Made people question social media and the addiction that followed it
ii. Millennials exposed to phones and social media at an early age
iii. Allowed for research and experiments on the effects of these social
medias

8. Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) is released - 2012


a. Online courses were in some way or another always relevant, for example, there were
televised college courses before. However, it was no until MOOC was released in which
released over hundreds of standardized courses recognized by the government. It
allowed everyone to take them, regardless of distance. It was a combination of two large
online education websites, Udacity and EdX, who teamed up and created MOOC.
i. It allowed for a standardized version of online courses at a college level
ii. Also represents the online courses taken at all levels, not just college
