Listening activities

#1 storytelling pods

Group activity

Description

-for this activity, the students will be divided into groups of three and they will have to come to
the middle of the class with their chair.

-then, when all the groups are ready the teacher will explain the activity and in these “pods,” they
are going to play the storytelling game, only in successive story events rather than one word.

- The teacher will provide an example as the first student starts with an event such as “The rabbit
found a carrot in the garden.” Then the second student adds an event that happens afterward in the
story, such as “The carrot was too big to carry.” The third student adds, “So the rabbit put it in a
wagon to pull it to his burrow.”

-After time will be given for the pods to telling the three-event stories.

-The teacher will ask the students to move to a new pod. In those groups, they must retell their
stories with perfect accuracy to their new pod members.

#2 Adjectives draw

Group activity

Description

-in this activity, the teacher will ask the students to get in pairs and then, they have to bring a chair
and a pencil to the middle of the classroom for making a circle.
-when students are ready the teacher will explain that the coming activity is about ´´adjectives
draw´´ so, the teacher will provide each student a piece of paper. The teacher will say an
adjective/noun combination and the students have to draw it.

-the teacher will make a demonstration before of how the activity will be developed with an
example such as ´´draw a long snake, draw a big house, etc´´.

- The teacher should try to make the activity fun making silly words such as ´´draw a small
elephant´´. The teacher should also draw so she or he can compare with the students’ pictures at
the end and also, the pairs have to compare their drawings.

#3 Put in order

Group activity

Description

-In this activity, the teacher will ask the students to get into teams of four students and have them
sit together.

-the teacher will provide to each group around 10 picture flashcards and each team must have the
same things.

-Then the teacher will say all the words for items in front of the students and they will have to pay
close attention.

-the students will listen but they must not touch the objects.
-Finally, the teacher will say “Put the objects in the correct order” and the teams have to put in
order the objects in the order that the teacher said to them. The teacher will have written down the
sequence in order to check students´ order.

#4 listen for lies

Group activity

Description

-for this activity, the teacher will divide the class into two teams A and B.

-when they are ready, the teacher will ask one student to come to the front of the class and read
aloud a passage which you have chosen, that could be a story or newspaper article.

- Then, the teacher will ask them to pay close attention to each idea of the paragraph after that the
teacher will ask the student to read it aloud again but to make some changes.

-Each time a lie (or change) is read out, the students must stand up. The first team to stand up gets
a point.

- This game requires students to listen carefully and encourages them to remember important
information and details.

Group activity

Description

-For this activity, the teacher will ask the students to get into teams of 3 or 4 and be separated in
order to see better the teams.

-Then everyone sits and listens carefully to the teacher for a description of something or someone
as for example “This is an animal which lives in Africa and Asia loves taking baths. It flaps its
ears to keep cool. It has a really long nose”.

-then each team will discuss what they think it is before giving an answer.

-the teacher will say the description sentence by sentence, encouraging the students to guess each
time, until one group wins.

The teacher will start with easy clues and slow speech but then progressively choose more difficult
words and speak more quickly so the students really have to concentrate.

In the end, the teams with more points will win the game.
