Extended Learning Opportunities

Year: 5

Week beginning: 25.9.16

Weekly This week has been a hive of activity in Year 5. As well as all of the exciting learning detailed
overview in our LO’s, we also took part in European Day of Languages. This was a wonderful occasion
with children across the year group engaging in learning a new language and learning about
different cultures.
In terms of our curriculum, a key focus this week has been to develop the children’s
understanding of complex sentence structures. The purpose of this is so that the children can
become familiar with them and use them, independently, in their own writing. A rather
poignant moment was spending Thursday’s English lesson reviewing the get writing activity
from the previous week so that the children could spend valuable time realising and
understanding the stepping stones they personally need to make to keep improving their
writing. We were able to conference with individuals and talk them through the markings. This
will happen each week following a get writing task and each child should have a photograph of
their work to discuss with you.
It was also fantastic to welcome all of you into our classrooms for our first Parent’s
Afternoon of the year. This was a fantastic opportunity to discuss the learning of your child and
to discuss any concerns you may have as well as celebrate their achievements in the first few
weeks of Year 5.
If you have any questions or concerns, then please don’t hesitate to contact me:
dwatson@dohacollege.com. I look forward to speaking to you all at the upcoming meeting
regarding our trip to Oman.

Have a lovely weekend!

which activities are to be completed over the course of the week and assigned days to do

Art
Please could all Year 5 children bring an old shirt or t-shirt, oversized, to cover their uniforms
when we are carrying out art based activities? They can then be kept in class.

Oman meeting
An information meeting regarding the trip for Oman will be held on the 3 rd October. The
meeting will be at 7.30am in AW and at 12.30pm in WB. If you have any difficulties with these
dates and times then please contact me and I can ensure that you are appraised of the
important information.
Class Mum/Dad
Each class would benefit from being represented within the parent community and so we
invite a parent of a child in each class to assume the role of ‘Class Mum/Dad’. This is not an
onerous task, the main aspects of the role being to provide a link between teacher and
parents. Please could you make yourself known to your child’s class teacher if you would like
to take on this role. At the moment we are low on volunteers, chat to your child’s class
teacher to find out more about what it entails.
