22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
The scripture readings today are so
clearly linked. We are back to St Mark’s
Gospel after many weeks listening to Jesus’
words on the Eucharist as recorded by St
John. The reading from St James is the first
of five over the coming Sundays. In our
first reading, we see Moses urging the
people to be faithful to God’s law, which is
not a burden to be endured but can be a
source of wisdom and of living a good life.
St James has several practical pastoral
examples to offer us. Today he reminds us
that it is not enough to listen to God’s
words – we need to put it into practice.
“Pure unspoilt religion in the eyes of God our
Father is this: Coming to the help of orphans
and widows when they need it, and keeping
oneself uncontaminated by the world.” The
widow/orphans are symbolic of all who are
vulnerable in our world. The orphan child
needs protection, help and support. We
can think of similar people: the homeless,
the refugee, the sick, the poor … no end to
those who need our practical help.
In the Gospel, St Mark reminds us of the
difficulties Jesus has with the Pharisees and
scribes – they
were the Jewish
leaders whom
Jesus referred to
as “hypocrites”.
They are so careful
about their own
“human
regulations”
and “human traditions”, forgetting about
the commandments of God.
Before we cast any ‘stones’, let us
remember that these words are addressed
to us too! Do we always do what is right?
Are we perfect ourselves? No! So, as ever
we need to begin with ourselves … ask
pardon from God for our failings; be patient
with ourselves and others and forgiving as
God is to us.
We can well reflect on the Words of St
Augustine, whose feast we celebrated last
Tuesday.
“Trust the PAST to God’s MERCY;
Trust the PRESENT to God’s LOVE;
Trust the FUTURE to God’s
PROVIDENCE”.
FAREWELL TO FR MARCEL: Very
soon Fr Marcel will be leaving us to return
to Rome to continue his studies. We really
appreciate his being with us for over two
months and thank him for his ministry.
This will be expressed especially in the
11am Mass today and followed by a
gathering/celebration in the parish hall
after Mass. Thanks to all who prepared
food and helped to organise this event.
NICARAGUA CRISIS: Fr John
McGowan, a Carmelite priest in Kensington
has asked for our prayers and help to
highlight the plight of farmers etc. in
Nicaragua. A vigil will be held outside the
Nicaraguan Embassy on Tuesday 5th
September, 12-1pm. The Carmelites are
serving in Nicaragua and hence the
connection. Any type of support will be
appreciated.
