Where the pumpkin meets the ocean

N
othing will happen at the stroke of
midnight, like in the tale of Cin-
derella, in the lower castle gardens
in Ludwigsburg. The thousands of pumpkins
on display on the grounds will remain the
same.
Red, orange, white, beige and green pump-
kins, almost 450 different types, the symbols
of harvest time are being displayed in a unique
way at the castle gardens. The pumpkin festi-
val started on Sept. 3 and will continue until
Nov.7.
“Currently we have about 100 tons of
pumpkins on display in the garden,” says Ste-
fan Hinner, organizer and event manager for
the exhibit. “We are dependent on Mother Na-

Blüba-Pumpkin Soup 1/2 cup onion
1 clove of garlic
3 tbsp. butter

with Maultaschen
2 cups mashed cooked pumpkin
1 cup celery
2 tbsp. risotto rice
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground pepper
3 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup half and half or fat free half
and half.
4 Maultaschen
Pumpkin seeds and oil to taste

Chop the onions, garlic and celery and gently


brown with butter in a pan.
Put mashed pumpkin with mix and brown
lightly. Add salt and pepper.
Slowly add chicken broth and heat thorough-
ly for 20 minutes, do not boil.
Add the cream and mix well. To serve, pour
into a tureen, add Maultaschen and add the
pumpkin seeds and some pumpkin oil on top.

Bad Cannstatt Volksfest runs until Oct. 10


The Volksfest is going on in Bad Cannstatt until Oct. 10.
Germany’s second largest beer festival (after the Octoberfest in
Munich) features several beer tents, live music, rides for children
and adults, and more.
This year, there will be a looping roller coaster, a water slide and
the world’s largest mobile Ferris wheel at the Cannstatter Wasen.
The traditional fireworks display at the festgrounds is scheduled
for Oct.10 at 9:45 p.m.
