1.3 Recognizing shapes of graphs of Quadratic Functions

GRAPH OF QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS:

o The shape of the graphs is known as parabola which is symmetrical about a vertical line
passing through the turning point (maximum or minimum point) of the graph.
o a determines the shape of a quadratic function. ( whether  or  shapes )
o If a is positive (a > 0) the graph is a parabola with a minimum point and opens up (  )
o If a is negative (a < 0) the graph is a parabola with a maximum point and opens down (  )
o The axis of symmetry is a vertical line passing through the maximum or minimum point
of the parabola

1.4 Relating the position of the graph of a quadratic function f ( x)  ax 2  bx  c with the
types of roots for f(x) = 0

o The roots of f(x) = ax2 + bx + c = 0 are the points where the graph of f(x) intersects the
x- axis.

o Thus, the number of the intersection points gives the number of roots for f(x) = 0.

o We will be able to determine the position of the graph of the function with respect to the
x-axis based on the types of roots of the quadratic equation f(x) = 0 by calculating the
value of b24ac.
