Course Introduction:

Welcome to English IV, the last leg in your journey towards freedom from high school. This is
an exciting time for all of us and I am confident that we can work together to make your final
year at JMHS the best one yet. I look forward to working with each of you over the course of this
year. The VA Standards of Learning Objectives demand a complex level of reading, thinking,
speaking, and writing for all students in this course. The standards set the criteria to ensure that
every student is college and/or career ready. Students will learn to engage in rich discussions
centered on common texts and learn to make evidentiary arguments in conversation and
writing. By the end of the course, students will have both a foundation in British literature and
be ready to branch out into post-graduation endeavors.

Rules and Expectations:

1. Respect – I require respect for the classroom environment and everyone in it. Respect is not
earned in my room, it is given. I believe in reciprocity – what you give is what you get. I will
always give you respect. I expect it in return.

2. Perspective – This is asking that you be reflective; “know thyself.” In order to navigate the
complications of our own thoughts, feelings, and lives it is important to know and (hopefully)
share our truths. I ask that we all try to listen and speak with compassion. Our perspectives
affect our reality. (If you are having a problem outside of the classroom that is affecting your performance in
class, please let me know. I cannot help if I’m unaware of the issue.)

3. Understanding – This is to be understood as synonymous with open-mindedness. You are

allowed and encouraged to share differing (constructive) opinions, as long as you can deliver
AND receive them respectfully. (Personal attacks will NOT be tolerated)

Student email:_____________________________________

I have read the English IV syllabus, and I understand what is

expected of me in this course. In order to be successful in this course, I also
understand that it is my responsibility to adhere to the class policies, complete
assignments, and seek help when needed.

I am aware of Richmond City Public School’s cheating and plagiarism policy. I

understand that cheating includes not only cheating on a test or quiz, but also
copying a classmate’s homework, and that plagiarism is defined as “the use of one’s
words or ideas as one’s own, whether found in printed material or electronic media.”
Incidents of cheating and plagiarism will result in parental contact and a grade of zero
on that assignment.
