Parent Information Letter
August 27, 2018

Dear Parents:

Welcome to sixth grade! I am looking forward to teaching your child and anticipate a
successful year. Expectations are high for the students this year, and their responsibilities will
increase. Students must be organized; complete a more difficult & extensive curriculum
and workload; use time management skills to get assignments done; and work to solve
problems on their own. At the same time, they will also participate in creative learning
activities and demonstrate what they know in imaginative ways. It is important that every
student comes to class with their best attitude daily!

This welcome packet that I’ve sent home with your child acquaints you with information
about the classroom. Also included is a fun assignment for you to complete! Please take
time to read and discuss the packet with your child. There are also several forms that need
to be signed and returned as indicated on the cover sheet.

I look forward to working with you toward the goal of providing the best educational
experience for your child. At home, one good way to review the day’s lessons is to ask your
child to tell you about what he or she did in class. Please encourage your child to read,
read, read and then tell you about what they read. Reading any written material will help
students with fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. I recommend at least 20 minutes
of reading a day to students. In addition, reinforcing organization and time management
skills goes a long way toward achieving the best educational experience possible.

Our textbook will challenge students to progress not only in their reading skills, but also with
their writing and critical thinking skills. It is important that students have access to their
textbook at home in order to study and practice the material taught in class.

The student anthology is available at my.hrw.com – this can be accessed at any time at
home with your student’s log-in. Students can be assigned a hardcover copy of the text to
take back and forth between school and home if they do not have internet or computer
access. We complete the majority of our classroom assignments on the computer. If a
student does not have computer access at home, it is important that I know as soon as
possible.

I will communicate classroom news and updates through

http://oswaldgold6.weebly.com/, which is our class website. I also strongly encourage use
of the homework hotline to keep updated on what your student is doing in class.

If you would like to contact me with questions or concerns, please contact me at school
via email at amanda.oswald@cr.k12.de.us or via phone at (302) 698 - 8400 - Extension 103.

Again, I welcome you to another school year, and I look forward to working with you and
your child to make it a fantastic one!

Your partner in education,

Classroom Rules/Expectations
The Gold 6 team believes in the expectation that each student will enter the
classroom being respectful, responsible, ready, reliable, and a role model for
their classmates. It is expected that all students come to class with their best
attitude and full cooperation in order to ensure that each student has an equal
opportunity for success.

Respectful: Each student is expected to be respectful to both teachers and

students within the classroom. This classroom will be a safe place for students to
challenge themselves. Mistakes are steps in the learning process, and students
should feel comfortable to make mistakes in the classroom. Students must be
focused for the full time that they are in the classroom, and therefore students
should minimize disruptions in order to be respectful to their teacher and
classmates. There is a zero tolerance policy for disrespectful behavior in the
classroom.

Responsible: Students are expected to take responsibility for their attitude and
work ethic, their assignments, as well as for classroom materials. Students work
with school issued computers on a daily basis in language arts. Each student will
be expected to treat these computers kindly and will be expected to return it in
the same condition in which they received it. Any computer or other classroom
material issues will be immediately addressed by teachers or administration.

Ready: Students are expected to come to class prepared to learn. When the
bell rings, students should be quiet, in their assigned seats, and working on their
bell ringer. Folders/notebooks should be brought to class every day, as well as a
positive attitude.

Reliable: A student’s success is a direct reflection on presence and attitude in the

classroom. Students are expected to be active participants during activities.

Role Models: Our school values leadership. We need good leaders and role
models who are willing to do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Students are expected to exhibit appropriate classroom behavior in all situations.

If students do not follow the expectations above, there will be appropriate

consequences.

Every day is a brand new day, and an

opportunity to put the actions of yesterday
behind us!
Grading Policies
Grading Process
Students will have many different opportunities to show what they have
learned. Grades are determined using points. Point values for each
assignment depend on the type of assignment. Practice is not always
graded, but students should always try their best. Practice makes perfect!

Cheating/Plagiarism
Cheating will result in a zero for the assignment
or test. Examples of cheating are copying
Grading Scale
answers from another student, plagiarism, and
turning in work completed by someone else as 92-100 A
one’s own. 85 - 91 B
75 - 84 C
Absent Work Policy 70 - 74 D
When a student is absent, he or she is responsible for
obtaining, completing, & turning in missed work 69 or F
according to the absence policy. Students have one Below
day per day absent to complete missed work. For
example, if a student misses school on Monday and
returns Tuesday, he or she has until Wednesday to turn
in Monday’s missed work in addition to any
assignments from Tuesday. Once students get
materials for missed assignments, it is the students’
responsibility to ask me any questions that they have
about missed assignments BEFORE they leave for the
day. Students should be checking our classroom
website to see what they missed.
Late Work
Students have one FULL week to turn in the assignment after the due date
for only -1 point. If the student turns the assignment in after a week, the
highest grade a student can receive is a 50%. Late work grades can really
hurt a student’s overall average. Please make sure that your student
understands how important it is to turn in their assignments on time.

*Homework: Students only have homework in ELA if they do not finish their
assignments in class. If they are consistently bringing work home to do, this means
that they may not be using their time wisely in class.
