FLUID SYSTEMS® ROGA® ELEMENTS - SHORT TERM SHUTDOWN

Short Term Shut-down Procedure for ROGA® Membrane Elements

GUIDELINES The following procedure may be used for shutdown periods of less than seven (7)
days. For longer periods, refer to ROGA® Elements Long Term Shutdown technical
bulletin.

PROCEDURE 1. Shut down the reverse osmosis system in accordance with all written
instructions.
2. Flush the system with acidified water, pH 5.5 ± 0.5, which contains a chlorine
residual of between 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L when measured at the brine discharge.
3. Flush time should be a minimum of 30 minutes based on the following
recommended maximum flow rates:
Element Nominal Diameter
3
4”.............2.3 m /hr/tube (10 gpm/tube)
3
8”.............9.1 m /hr/tube (40 gpm/tube)
4. With the system full of the flushing solution, close all inlet and outlet valves.
Make sure the system is full of chlorinated water.
5. Repeat this procedure every two (2) days when the water temperature exceeds
68°F (20°C). For temperatures below 68°F (20°C), flushing should be repeated
every seven (7) days.
6. For systems exposed to the direct sunlight, treated water should be
continuously passed through the system.

PRECAUTIONS A. Repeated flushings are necessary because free chlorine is unstable, especially
at acid pH. Also, biological growth rates are extremely temperature dependent.
B. Flushing may be done by recirculation using the flushing system.
C. For these systems exposed to direct sunlight, the temperature inside the
vessels will be much higher than ambient unless water is continuously passed
through the system.
D. For those systems in which the normal operating conditions are described in
item 2, it is only necessary to shut the system down and proceed with item 3.
