Journal of Nicholas Anastas. Hater of America

Summer 1949. Thousands of families were crowding around the United States Information Centre. Many
weeping and screaming in distraught over loss in loved ones but also those left homeless. My family
were part of this ordeal. Left with no home as the war had just ended between the Nationalists and the
Communists. Many buildings left to decay with roads covered in dust and rubble and abandoned cars
spotted the streets.

We relied on them.

I was told our country was just a bargaining chip. We were swapped for Romania. Just another nation
added into Britain’s empire. Our country in despair, and yet we were on the “good” side. The side of
justice and the righteous. This is what we were told. Officer’s walking around with supplies. Food, water,
clothes. People in suits carrying briefcases and clipboards checking buildings.
